Favorite Book: Geek Love

This is a heartwarming story about a circus family trying to save their dying business. In order to produce more human oddities for their circus the ringmaster's wife will injest harmful chemicals while she is pregnant in order to create birth defects in their children.

The book details how this family loves one another in their unconventional environment and how the eldest boy attempts to overcompensate for his deformity by forming a sort of charismatic cult that encourages his followers to have more and more of their bodies surgically removed. The story is told from the viewpoint his albino dwarf sister who is in love with him.

If you are a grade school teacher and have had problems with fundamentalist christians complaining about Harry Potter being on your reading list, I would suggest that you replace it with this touching book.
