Oh boy...

Uhh, I'm going to be travelling to the DC in late September! What to do, what to do... Must-sees and other ideas, post 'em here if you would please. Staying in National Harbour area.

Portrait Gallery
National Cathedral

I wish I knew more but I don't spend copious amounts of time in the city itself.

2 Ami's Pizza
Brickskellar
Bistro du Coin ( for french food )
Amsterdam Falafel
Galaxy Hut in Arlington (meet julie!)

Whoa, National Harbor area!? You are a brave man.

I second Anthony's votes for the Portrait Gallery and the Galaxy Hut.

You're kind of into architecture/design/building stuff, aren't you? The National Building Museum is awesome and free, with a really great gift shop. Not sure what exhibits will be there in Aug, but it's definitely my favorite museum in DC. The Hirshhorn is a close 2nd.

At night take a walk down around the Tidal Basin by the FDR memorial, it's really pretty down there and less touristy after dark.

The Spy Museum is not free but it is rather awesome. Go to Poste (nearby) for brunch & drinks in the cool courtyard.

Get a burger at any area Five Guys location, there is one in Chinatown.

Come see a movie (and drink while you watch!) at AFI Silver.

Sangria and tapas at Jaleo (multiple locations)

Palace of Wonders, creepy weird bar-slash-sideshow freak museum. They have a taxidermied 2 headed goat and weekly sword-swallowing acts!

I'm sure I have more ideas, k-mail me closer to the trip.

Wait, brave? What?? It's a giant convention center, they would build that in a nice safe area, wouldn't they???

Spy Museum sounds cool! I will try to convince the sales guys to go to Palace of Wonders, that would throw them for a loop.

Galaxy Hut, I see a brew pub in Arlington? If so, that is an easy sell!

Oh shit, I just realized the Smithsonian is in DC! I might need 2 weekends...

Yes, the Smithsonian is in DC. And, the Smithsonian is actually like 7 (8?) different huge museums & art galleries.

Dude, National Harbor is a very new development on the southeast waterfront. You have been warned.

So far:

NPG (partly to see if Colbert's pic is still somewhere in there)
Smithsonian - this is likely one full day
StalkMeet Julie at Galaxy Hut
Spy Museum or Building Museum

Maybe: George Washington's crib. Is this worth the trip? I'm not big on old-timey people in character, but I like educational tours of significant old buildings, esp with civil war history. Nashville plantations were great.

Aw crap, I just noticed David Sedaris is reading at GWU when I'm there, but no tickets available! Does anybody here happen to have any connections? I wonder if GWU students got first grabs...
woody [email] said at 9:59 PM 09-29-2008:
I am here and I have a ticket for this! Yay for Woody!! And I'm seeing Cake in B'more on Thursday too! Is anybody going to that?

So I'm having my morning coffee and reading the Washington Post this morning, and I read that it's Mary Ellen Slayter's last Career Tracks column. And I'm thinking "That's odd, why do I know that name..."
