Donating your childhood

For the past two days, I've been at my parents' house and the primary objective of this trip, aside from seeing my family, was to clean out their basement. I recently moved and for two weeks, I've been trying to purge my own belongings and to try and simplify my life a bit. So I've been in search and destroy mode lately.

A good lot of the things in storage are my sister's and my toys, school papers, and other childhood objects. Other than coming across them happenstance while searching for something else in the basement and getting warm nostalgic fuzzies, or saving them in hopes of opening a museum about myself, I can't think of any reason to keep this stuff around.

And yet, I feel intense guilt in getting rid of it. I mean, I'll never sit in the yard and move small loads of dirt in a Tonka truck from one arms reach to another, or strategically position GI Joes around the yard for an attack by Cobra that was doomed from the get-go. My Mom doesn't help either. There are still parts of her that pine for the days when she could dress me up in "outfits" and my only cares were whether or not I'd get to rent the Goonies or eat another oatmeal cream pie.

I'm definitely going to be bummed when it leaves and yet there's my overbearing pragmatic side that knows it would continue to sit in the basement collecting dust and going unused for many years to come, until the day that I'd either move it to my own house or leave my parents' to deal with it should they move again.

I wish I felt 100% like this is the right thing to do.

knowing is half the battle (I can't resist)

Is any of that stuff worth anything? The GI Joes?

I went through the same thing right before college, my parents moved two weeks before I went to LSU. I was very bitter about it. But it made the cleaning out process easier because we HAD to get rid of stuff. Also since I had to move EVERYTHING (some things twice) I was so sick of it I was just like 'throw it away' to some things.

Do you have any relatives with kids? Sometimes it feels better to give the stuff you're really attached to to a kid you know. Also, you could line all your GI Joes up on your Tonka truck (I totally had a yellow one) and take a picture for nostalgia's sake.

And some of that stuff it's okay to keep awhile. I still have my blankee. (Shut up.)

Well, I definitely won't get rid of my blankee and a handful of other things. I don't really have any relatives who would want older toys or need them. I'm not even sure kids play with toys that aren't digital.

The one thing my Mom was sure we would get rid of was the Nintendo. wrong.

Yeah, taking pictures helped me a ton. Also, who on EARTH would get rid of their nintendo?! I still want to *buy* one.

Take pictures, scan drawings, ebay what you can, donate what you can't, throw away what no one wants.

I held on to a few things, enough to fill a shoebox.

It's rough...I'm a horrible packrat.

I used to be a horrible pack rat, and I hate the idea of subscribing to a throw away society, but I think I will definitely whip out the digital camera and take some pictures. Good idea.

i probably made a grand or so selling my old toys on ebay.... gi joes and transformers are ebay gold
anthony [email] said at 3:04 PM 09-02-2007:
I am going to look into this, but the underlying problem would be that my Mom would be the one who'd have to package and ship everything. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.

Like right now, I have a large component Technics stereo with floor standing speakers that I'm trying to get rid of. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it aside from a few minor cosmetic blemishes, but I can't even sell it for 150.

      with a turntable?
anthony [email] said at 2:29 AM 09-03-2007:
I do have a turntable, although I think it needs some work. When I originally listed this stereo, I stated that I would throw the turntable in for free as it is not an original component of the stereo. I dunno. It's a relatively cheap one and I feel like it plays records too slow.

Also, the receiver for this system doesn't have a built in phono pre-amp. I had one but lent it to a friend who now live in Florida. I should ask her about it.

      do you need the money?
making money off of stuff can be a hassle... nothing wrong with just donating it and getting the weight off.
I just got rid of a lot of stuff.
