LittleBigPlanet

A really nice guy that I met at the SIGGRAPH graphics conference this summer Alex Evan started a company called Media Molecule last year. This year his company unveiled their first game, LittleBigPlanet at the Sony keynote speech at GDC this year in San Francisco. It got a standing ovation and people are really hyping it up. I'm so happy for him. He used to do a lot of coding in the euro Demo Scene and has a very unique way of thinking about graphics in general, so i like to hear his ideas. I got to go out to lunch with him yesterday. Hopefully that all works out for him, it looks like he's going to do quite well for himself. Everyone should watch the presentation and demo from the conference here. The game looks fucking awesome.

nice go team song. those kids must be filthy rich by now...

I don't really follow games, but I've never seen anything this amazing before. Great use of that song, even though I'm not really a Go Team fan.

The graphics in that game look pretty awesome. Are you nervous about your talk?
jeremy [email] said at 1:45 AM 03-11-2007:
my talk was wednesday. it went alright.
courtney [email] said at 2:28 AM 03-13-2007:
I couldn't make your talk because for some reason, this year I received an expo only pass and not exhibitor. I have no idea what was up with that :(

      Sorry I missed you!

it's cool. i tried to text message you from the sony party to see if you were there but I think maybe at that point I was having difficulty operating electronics devices
courtney [email] said at 9:04 PM 03-13-2007:
Free booze'll do that to ya. ;) I also think that the reception is bad at Mezzzanine.

I wasn't at the party, I was fried from working the booth all day and wouldn't have enjoyed it!
jeremy [email] said at 1:49 AM 03-11-2007:
There is video online somewhere of the whole keynote where they get up on stage and demo it live with some sony exec.. it's worth watching.
evan [email] said at 12:18 PM 03-11-2007:
this looks neat, but it doesn't seem to be that different than most side scrollin sorta games. what's the big deal? not trying to shit on it, but maybe there's something about the game play i'm missing.

also, when is spore coming out?
jeremy [email] said at 4:13 PM 03-11-2007:
there are small things about it that make a big difference. first, everything has physics to it and you can grab, swing and pull from anything in a natural fashion with the analog sticks. second, it's definitely the best looking side scroller ( though this game is actually 2.5d, the direction changes ) and overall has awesome art direction. it also has this whole "game 3.0" ( sony's spin on adding community elements to games ) element to it where you can build your own levels (solo or collaboratively), decorate and explore them with friends. I'm not really that excited about that part. I'll be curious how that works out.. it's going to take .23 seconds before someone uploads the first giant penis decal and starts slapping it on everything.
anthony [email] said at 1:10 AM 03-12-2007:
I think there's a game that just came out in which you blow things up, and the pieces of larger objects all have physics applied to them, such that no explosion or whatever looks the same. Some gamer in my office showed me a trailer for it, but I dont' remember the name.

Cool idea though, although I wonder what the overhead is for doing that kind of book keeping.
josh [email] said at 4:32 PM 03-11-2007:
it just looks like a fun, interesting game concept... a 4 player side scroller with sweet graphics and physics puzzles...

one thing that has seemed to dog sony is the fact that none of their games so far really bring anything new to the table... xbox has the whole "live" thing, so if you are really into online gaming that's the platform you want. wii has the motion sensing, party gaming goodness... what does the ps3 offer beyond better graphics? i think this and home are them trying to fill that gap.
