To speeddate or not to speeddate?

The McGill Post-Graduate Student Society is holding a speeddating event for graduate students and post-doctoral students. ONLY for grads and post-docs. I guess they're aware of the extreme isolation (and dismal romantic opportunities) spawned by graduate research. Then again, should I be dating another grad student in the first place? I'm curious to try it, but I anticipate a lot of awkwardness. I wish I could talk another grad student into going with me, but all the ones I know are either married or as good as married.

I'm curious to hear your comments about speeddating... Have you tried it? Do you know someone who has tried it? Was is worthwhile? Any advice?

while speed dating seems really dorky on some level to me, really, why not?

what's the worse that could happen? you don't find anyone and your situation hasn't changed at all?

also, while i think speed dating is dorky, i used to think internet dating is dorky, and that's now my primary method of meeting girls.

Well, the worst that could happen is she meets someone who develops a violent obsession with her a la "Sleeping With The Enemy." Or is a dork extraordinaire a la "Mr. Wrong."

But both possibilities seem very unlikely so I would still have to agree with Kiche for the most part.

well your first scenario seems highly unlikely, because genvieve would be meeting other graduate students from montreal.

the second scenario does seem like more of a danger, for the exact same reason as above; but i think ms. kadoo (spelling incorrect, i know, but let's leave out correct last names here) could easily get rid of some dorky loser.

in which case, she'd have neither gained nor lost anything.

but, i see in your final analysis you agree with me.

go for it gen, what have you got to lose?

sounds fun

whatever, i like the fact that it's not montreal speed dating, which actually wouldn't suck too bad most likely, but instead a somehow pre-screened crowd since they are already mcgill students. really the only negetive side would be attempting to go on a date with someone who had absolutely no time to "date" because of their workload. whatev, don't listen to the boys. sounds like you need something to shake things up.

I see that as a positive aspect - I suspect that I shouldn't have to explain to other grads or post-docs why I have little free time, or why I often "work" evenings and weekends, or why I've essentially chosen to be poor until I'm in my mid 30s, or that there's little else I'd rather be doing.

Yes, this is why I like talking to architects, even though I hate architects. At least I don't have to justify my life, or why I don't mind the fact that I was at work from 1pm yesterday (Saturday) till midnight.

too challenging

its just like at a party, except with better lighting
myriam [email] said at 6:53 PM 08-27-2005:
you gotta meet people somehow. i don't see why not do it this way
reggie [email] said at 1:56 AM 08-28-2005:
I can't explain why but it just don't feel natural.
kiche [email] said at 10:33 AM 08-28-2005:
yeah, but it's freaking $2. and that's two canadian dollars at that, so in the real world it's like a dollar.

i mean, com'on, even if it totally blows, she'd only be out a buck. also, lots of people who wouldn't normally do this probably will because it's cheap.
reggie [email] said at 11:44 AM 08-28-2005:
If I did it wouldn't be to actually meet anybody though. I'd put on a completely different act for each speed-date.

Lots of gobbledygook I'm too bored to read, but that you might find interesting...

It is also true, Li said, that very smart and successful women will have a harder time finding partners. "It seems that men want somebody intelligent enough so that they can recognize the man's brilliance," he said, "but not necessarily enough to challenge them — or so smart that they find someone else more interesting."

Hahahahaha. Interesting theory. Though I do agree that it's hard for smart, high achieving women to find supportive male partners.
