i am going to blow my wad on this here machine

and there's nothing any of you can do to stop me! bwah ha ha ha!

actually, i'm in the mid-stages of researching my first major vehicular purchase. any scooter peeps out there with advice or horror stories, hit me.

now, i have a knee-jerk hatred for repro anything. i like perfect vintage. i am a spolied brat who thinks she's rich, but i am not. i want a perfectly restored somethin from the mid '60s that i can go to the eagle on and throw makes and models around and stupid crap like that.

however. in grilling all the chicks (and one dude too rich and old and obsessed with restoring rare scoots from the 40s to count) i know who ride scooters and/or choppas, one point becomes clear. the pretty, old bikes need fixing all the damn time. a feat which sounds really boss once you have any kind of knowledge about engines, but not if you want it to pass emissions so that you may actually ride the thing this year.

a friend who owns lots of heart-stopping custom choppers fully understood this reluctance to buy new, and intimated that even she got her first bike new, just cause she wanted one, and all the fancy shit came later (mid-'60s totally rebuilt triumph, drool) when she knew more and could care for them.

while learning repair, search for parts, etc. sounds fun, it sounds like a hard start. i know too many people who got a crappy vespa shell off ebay and it is still collecting dust.

i don't know how to fix anything yet, never even seen a scooter engine. and i'm gonna want something reliable to ride to learn. so it seems like the thing to do is to grudgingly buy a new, retro-look bike, learn to ride it and keep it up, then, if i'm good, sell it a few years down the road and buy my fantasy babemachine.

and and and, i'm gonna need to get a licence, pay insurance, and what's the point if it's always broke?

so, i'm a goin' test-driving, specifically this little number:

it's a brand-new stella, fashioned to look more lambretta-ish than vespa-ish (i don't like their repros at all; too many old dudes in suits zooming around. blick.).

it needs accessories, which will have to wait or be scavenged: whitewalls, chrome horn cover (i hate the modern-looking spedometer/horn on this), white handlebar covers, chrome cowl rails, and, of course, about 6 more mirrors, like in quadrophenia.

ahhh. obsessing about possesions is much nicer than obsessing about people.

also, someone break it to me if this is the bike equivalent to a freaking PT cruiser. if it's a mini eqiv, i can live with that.
dave [email] said at 9:19 PM 08-01-2005:
i owned a vintage lambretta for awhile. it was a hoss 200cc's. these things do require a lot of care and feeding, i never had any engine related issues, but the electrical wiring was completely a fuckjob. Be wary of getting something small like a 50cc. I know a lot of the newer ones they sell are around that size, but if you ask me it's not enough horsepower to be safe. You need some juice to be able to get out of the way, as anyone who has rides can tell you it's just a matter of time before some jerk doesn't see you and almost hits you. I'll dig around for a picture of mine.

all this info from people who've driven them is so helpful. i don't know if i have to take a safety course in dc, but i'd surely want to. it's a whole new vehicle to drive.
Bendependent [email] said at 1:53 AM 08-02-2005:
In DC/MD/VA you have to take a $125 motorcycle safety course that happens a few weekends a month i think. there's a link to all the dates and times on the DMV site in the motorcycle section.

And yeah, the 50cc ones would scare the shit out of me in DC. Really driving a scooter at all in traffic in DC kinda scares the shit out of me. I've always imagined driving it around all late at night like when i'm usually up and there is no traffic. or bringing it to fun roads and beaches in the van...

oh, good. i love safety. i looked on the dmv site and they don't seem to care unless you are missing a limb or something.
i forsee myself driving around a lot of parking lots up near my parents house first...

I'm obsessed with that color. I must paint my kitchen orange now.
brandon [email] said at 11:35 PM 08-01-2005:
In all honesty, Shauna, all this talk about you riding and or working on scooters and bikes, well, it makes me want to blow my wad on something, too. And that something is not Cecil, despite the sexy eyeglasses.
shauna [email] said at 10:57 AM 08-02-2005:
very nice. please lean left. and i dunno shite yet, so stick to your barely legal for now.
Bendependent [email] said at 1:50 AM 08-02-2005:
the new stellas are sweet. i drool over them whenever i see them...

...and over any girl i see on one for that matter. there's pretty much nothing hotter than a girl puttering off on a cute little scooter with a big space helmet on. oh man oh man oh man. that and girls playing ms pacman. i don't know what it is... i guess those would count as my two creepy fetishes (altho i guess they're pretty normal).

but yeah, the stellas are rad and it seems like more and more of them are popping up all over town which is kind of neat. only problem is they retail for like $2900, which i guess isn't too bad if you can afford it. they're definitely cooler than the new vespas and the new bajaj chetaks just cos they are way more exact in their retro-ness of body style.

i would totally get one if i could afford it. i still have the old school bajaj in the basement that ONE OF THESE DAYS i will get around to completely restoring. it's a big job though, and one that I haven't been able to do in almost 5 years now!!!

So yeah, I'd say go with something that works that would be reliable if you can afford it, and if not just buy an old vespa from craigslist. there's new ones up there a lot.

Maybe one of these days we'll be scooter buddies. I'm like $1000 or so and a bunch of time away from ever getting mine on the street. it's super sketchy. i'd like to buy another one that works and just use this one as an eventual project. been thinking about that for a while tho.

the allure of the busted up old dangerous one though is that i've always figured that once i take the time and money to know the ins and outs of it, that it could basically be a vehicle that could run forever (or until I die on it at least). it's quite a simple machine when it comes down to it.

let me know what you end up doing. if you want someone to go scooter shopping with i am also down...
Bendependent [email] said at 1:56 AM 08-02-2005:
stupid scooter. why won't you work?
jake [email] said at 2:00 AM 08-02-2005:
Bitch, if you came to camp this summer you woulda had that grand to spend.
Bendependent [email] said at 2:32 AM 08-02-2005:
i woulda come to camp if you didn't need me in TWO DAYS from when you called!!!!!

        ugh.

(that's how you spell out utter disgust, mister.)
jake [email] said at 3:57 PM 08-02-2005:
I woulda called you sooner if they'd told me sooner!
I don't know if Laura told you, but we totally got a better computer instructor anyway.
She's got nintendo tattoos, and she got in a fight with the camp van and won.
          Well she walked away anyway.

          Seriously, we miss you lots.
shauna [email] said at 11:03 AM 08-02-2005:
ha ha! soo hot. and it's in front of a ms. pac man machine! you just posted benporn.
Bendependent [email] said at 6:41 PM 08-02-2005:
oh wait! i forgot about pigtails! how could i forget about pigtails? or skirts for that matter? i think just about everyone who went to a catholic school or has any image of a catholic school girl burned in their mind has the creepy skirt fetish tho...

i'm also a big fan of girls that wear those horizontally striped shirts that bend over their boobies.

i saw the scooter girl with the green stella and the pink helmet today. she was wearing a skirt and had a striped shirt on.

i think i might hate her.

but yeah, here's some more benporn:

        thought i'd share...
talice [email] said at 2:31 AM 08-02-2005:
vespas and stellas are super cool. . but so much more pricey than the red vino i had before i moved for school. it wasn't the scooter of my dreams, but it came my way through a friend with one previous owner, a year old, and at a good price. (about a third or so less than stella/vespa) it was cute and even though i bruised and bled from falling we had some good times. i was s'pposed to take the safety course but i never did. at least in b.r. others told me that i'd probably just get a warning if i ever got pulled over. the mileage is super awesome. insurance super cheap. even though i laid it down a couple of times it was still sweet to me. scooters are pretty easy to maintain yourself definitely fun as hell. i remember after my first fall i couldn't ride it for awhile. . . i was too damn scared! but at some point i decided i wasn't going to let the thing boss me around and started riding again.
shauna [email] said at 11:01 AM 08-02-2005:
the price puts me off, so shopping around is totally on the agenda. and everyone i know, not just women, is scared to death of their motorcycle or scooter. it's not like you can throw back a buncha beers and get on, like with a car (ha). seriously, all that cool factor is a matter of practice and knowing your vehicle. this is going to take a while, but that's better than death. "death" is the one word i keep hearing from everyone who rides. i think it's a good thing to keep in the back of your mind!
