In three days, I will be on my way to begin a week-long journey into one of the most remote parts of California, and for that matter, the entire country: the beautiful, yet desolate stretch of the California coastline that runs from the Kings Range in Humboldt Count to far down into Menodocino County aptly called the Lost Coast.
The entire hike is about 80 miles, and the trail ascends and descends several thousands of feet. There are no signs of the modern world in this region. There are no restaurants, no stores of any kind, virtually no people(except other backpackers), and cellphones don't work either.
One has to bring enough food, clothes, water, and any other provisions needed for survival to last an entire week.
This might sound brutal, but just look at this landscape!
I love living in San Francisco, but it will be truly great to get away from all of the big city madness for a week.
It will be great to sleep under the stars every night. It'm also looking forward to the odd phenomenon of not hearing a cellphone ring or seeing any cars belching fume for a week.
The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the crappy freeze-dried food we're going to have to eat every night. Ughh.
But...c'est la vie.
This is the last strech of the Sinkyone wilderness, right before you get to Shelter Cove and civilization.
