Ahh...the French

April 12, 2005
New York, NY

I felt like enlightening myself tonight, so I went to a lecture at NYU by a pretty famous French intellectual, Didier Eribon. For anyone who cares, he is the biographer of and an expert on Michel Foucault, a pretty important French philosopher.

It was fairly incoherent for the most part, until Eribon, the speaker, points out a woman in the audience and starts raving about how surprised he is that NYU could invite a prominent homophobe to be a visiting professor.

He got back to his lecture, and things were going pretty smoothly until the question and answer session began. The woman he pointed out, some French sociologist, stands up and speaks her peace. This starts a verbal combat in true gallic fashion. Cries of "homophobe", "liar", and Eribon screaming repeatedly in French "did you or did you not call artificial insemination by lesbians the 'butchery of procreation?'".

Graduate students and professors were running around like it was a riot. It was fucking hilarious. The professors shut the lecture down with students behind me screaming about censorship.

I might be a geek, but that was fun.

I read once that E.O. Wilson had a pitcher of water dumped over his head once at a conference.

I have also read that Norman Mailer (not Erica) threw Gore Vidal onto a buffet table. Vidal responded by saying, "Once again, words fail you, Norman."

Supposedly, William Buckley called Vidal a "pinko commie queer" on a talk show to which Vidal replied, "I will always treat Bill Buckley like the great lady he is."

I saw Christopher Hitchens claim once that he ate dinner that was supposed to have been served to Henry Kissinger.

I used to know all kinds of lowdown shenanigans that the eggheads who live in the wild and woolly world of academia have engaged in; I cannot remember most of them now. Kissinger said something once to the effect of academic arguments being so heated because the importance was so small.

i had heard that gore vidal called william buckley a cryptonazi to which buckley responded, "shut up before i come over there and hit you, faggot."

i believe this was during the democratic convention of '68.

I think the phrase is "Academic politics are so vicious because the stakes are so small." I can't remember who said it, but I don't think it was Kissinger. It might be David Lodge.

Gore Vidal seems to show up in a lot of literary legends. He's kind of like Johnny Cash.

    So is Voltaire.

He called Lessing a "monkey" for rejecting Friedrich II of Prussia's suggestion of using the French literary model.

"pretty famous French intellectual, Didier Eribo"

Of course I read that as a "pretty, famous French intellectual" and then I got confused when I read the name.
