some thoughts about content.

josh: me and ben have been talking about 3.0
zack soto: ahh
josh: and one of the big things we are adding
josh: is the fact that all content is treated the same in the database
zack soto: ok..
josh: be in a news, image, post, etc
zack soto: k
josh: so this led to the idea of taking a feature i wanted to add, which is albums for your images
zack soto: and what exactly is that going to do?
josh: and turn it to an album for any of your content
zack soto: ahh
josh: which then turned into the idea of making it an album for any content
josh: so for example, kiche could create an "album" called republicans are evil
zack soto: like a journal album, a image album, etc?
zack soto: lol
josh: and include any content from killoggs related to that
zack soto: with his rants?
zack soto: ohhhhh
josh: even content he didnt make
josh: with like an introduction
zack soto: like a favorites list or somethign
josh: "republicans are evil, a content album by kiche" with like a paragraph of his introudction, then links to everything
josh: kinda
zack soto: yeah
zack soto: i think i see where you're going with that
josh: it would also allow people to make their own categories basically
josh: like say i was... refurbishing my house
josh: i could make a content album called "fixing my house" and just keep all those posts there
josh: does this sound interesting/usuful?
zack soto: hmmm
zack soto: yes
zack soto: i like that
zack soto: then ..
zack soto: then you could have the main page be kind of like it is now, except it'd be kind of cool if..
zack soto: like say instead of a w2hole entry pop up when you post your newest main page enrty..
zack soto: like say all the members were like uh index cards
josh: yeah we are thinking the front page would be some kind of index of content
josh: haha index cards
zack soto: and when they'd post, their index card was brought to the top
josh: hmm thats an interesting take on it
zack soto: and at the top of the index card, it had their newest post title and maybe a sentence or two from it, or an abstract of the post
zack soto: and below that in the rest of their index card, it had all their albums listed
josh: i was thinking the front page would basically have an area with tabs, one tab for each "content type" and each tab would list the 20 most recent items, but not in full maybe, just like the first sentence or whatever
josh: yeah that index card idea is good too
zack soto: you could do it both ways really
zack soto: indexed by album type, but also by the users who create the albums
josh: we just want to take killoggs beyond being a blog, but leave the blog elements there as well
zack soto: yeah
zack soto: i like that
josh: cool. well we are working on it.
zack soto: cool
josh: im gonna post this should i change your IM name?
zack soto: nah
zack soto: it's fine
josh: damn it can you paste me back what we typed
josh: my computer blows
zack soto: yeah hold up

feel free to discuss this in the responses.

Random thoughts for future reference:

I tend to want to make Killoggs into sort of my start page/organizer/place i store all my thoughts/blog/way to comunicate with friends... and let every other member do that as well.

Blog posts are cool but allowing all of you to basically organize your own part of the site based around what you are interested in and what you want to do with it seems a LOT more interesting to me.

The way it is now, it's hard to follow a series of thoughts/events... for example, the only way we could make it so that you could find all of ben's dirtfarm comics was to make a new category for it... same for kara's cereal reviews. and obviously, we can't just make a category for everything.

i'm intrigued by the idea that reggie could make an "album" called "my first feature film" and then, as he created content, not just post posts about writing it, about filming it, and so forth, but also include links to images (storyboards, stills), journal entries that are related to the shooting... perhaps a sub-album that was simply a shooting diary... not to mention include posts by other members that include references to days they spent working on the film with him.

the result would be a whole sub-area of the site that was all related and totally "curated" by reggie... which interests me, a lot.

Other examples:

Ben could make an album called "Animation" and add every thing ever posted on killoggs that related to animation - posts, news, links, images.

On a simpler tip, I could make an album called "Underground Horror DVDs" and simply go out and find sites that sold underground horror DVDs and store the links so I could get to them all later - bookmarks, but on Killoggs so everyone could use them. (perhaps it could be set up so that you guys could suggest ones for me to add).

never seen flikr? is that flickr.com?
josh [email] said at 1:55 PM 03-29-2005:
Oh flickr is a photo sharing site... no, this wouldn't be just photos... I just can't think of a better word than "album"... i use "content album" when i'm thinking about it myself, but that's really an even worse term for it. Folio or Portfolio are bad too, and folder is misleading.

Like I said, this would be a way for someone to organize any content - content they created, content another killogger created, or content from the internet.

Content could be any content on killoggs now (post, news, journal, image, link, sound, event) or one of the new content types we are adding (review, media, feature, store item).

Since every content item is going to be treated the same and part of the same DB, every content item can be responded to, sorted, etc... either as a unified whole or based on type, category, "album".

Gotcha. the thing that made me think of flickr is the that it is also community-based - you tag your photos with anything you want, for example "Dog" or "Eyeball" etc., then you can look at other people's pics with the same tags, or search for any tags, or sort your own pics just by whatever tag you've used. Its pretty cool in practice. Pretty popular in the bay area. Yahoo just bought it.

kinda like how the "interests" in myspace, if you click em, will show other people with that interest... cool.
josh [email] said at 1:50 PM 03-29-2005:
I don't think it has much to do with MySpace... MySpace pretty much is like killoggs is now - users have the ability to create very STRUCTURED and NARROW types of things that are organized in the way that the site admin wants them organized (you can't even view your friends list in any order but the default, which is annoying since it's non-alphabetic).

MySpace's big thing though, is the fact that everyone pretty much is on it.
josh [email] said at 2:06 PM 03-29-2005:
One of the reasons this appeals to me is that, assumming people actually used it, is that it would get interesting as we changed and grew out of/developed interests...

I mean, like I know that Kara was really into Burlesque and so forth... not as much now, but if she had had this tool when she was at the height of her interest, there would be a little "killoggs wikipedia" by kara just on that topic, reflecting not just the topic but HER views on, and interaction with the topic.

It seems interesting to me.

So you would be able to browse other people's corrals?
josh [email] said at 2:47 PM 03-29-2005:
yes, but i think people could also set their "corrals" to private or members only, too.

just like any other content item.

can i make all my past posts non-viewable?
josh [email] said at 1:33 AM 03-30-2005:
posts probably won't be nonviewable (because whats the point of a "front page post" thats nonviewable), but it's concievable we could change them into journal entires
myriam [email] said at 2:36 PM 03-29-2005:
I *hate* the "more" link on blogs, where just an abstract is shown at the beginning and you have to click to see more. I like that killoggs lays it all bare right up front. I have thought about this a lot. To me the "more" thing is totally blogtarded.
zack [email] said at 2:53 PM 03-29-2005:
yeah, i was just trying to think of a way to make things more modular.. save some space by having a fixed size for people's index cards or whatever.
brandon [email] said at 5:29 PM 03-29-2005:
1) I love this idea 2) Do this. 3) make the front page a rolodex flash animation that makes a "whoosh, whoosh" sound as you search for a name. Also, make it so you have to start from the beginning of the alphabet, even if you know you're just going to read Zack's stuff.

3, I am concerned that some massive re-categorization of the older content may be in order. Or, you could simply... start anew.
jake [email] said at 1:49 PM 03-31-2005:
What you're describing is basically what www.delicios.us does. You may have a different approach to the code architecture, but that's what they do through their tags.

I think that would be great...but I hope there's still a page like the frontpage now, that just churns out each piece of content as it gets added, in order.
But it would be great if news, links, images, etc, just turned up there too, one above the next in a giant column of torn up toilet paper strips.
zack [email] said at 2:12 PM 03-31-2005:
I'm hoping 3.0 will have a signifigant aesthetic overhaul as well? different color schemes and themes? no more torn paper? or something. There's a lot that could be done.
jake [email] said at 2:31 PM 03-31-2005:
      ?????????????????????????????????????????

What is killoggs if not torn scraps of paper
      floating in a not-quite-royal-blue sea?
