New Yankskee

I find myself in NYC right now for work and need some advice on things to do/see. Don’t know how loose the company leash will be, but I need options to ponder as I dream of balancing a mundane corporate existence and a swinging nightlife.

212 / 718 Killoggers send me some suggestions, I will be in Manhattan until Sunday.

The Gates look nice normally, but they're amazing in the snow - so check them out today or tomorrow before the snow melts.

So what, Cowboy Pete? Could you have raised 22 mil for it if it was your project? What if 22 mil people see it and think it's worth more than $1 to see apiece?
myriam [email] said at 1:40 PM 02-23-2005:
where is Les Gamins?

I will be in nyc this weekend, Friday-Sat only I guess. Dave, are those museum tix still available? not sure i'll have time but i wanna try. i have yet to see a single museum in nyc.

Le Gamin - Bill Viola and Tim Hawkinson's at the Whitney - I'd say start there and then enter the park and head north, I like spending the entire day walking around, but I'm a goat that way, two hours should be fine. I don't know what's at PS1 now, but I'd be into checking it out
myriam [email] said at 3:39 PM 02-23-2005:
darn, ps1 is closed as of yesterday, to get ready for the "Greater New York 2005" exhibit opening in a couple weeks. Grr. Oh well. Well if there is anything else you would like to see, I'm happy to meet up. I think we're just gonna rent a car for the weekend.

Go to the Met, it's free (donation) and gigantic, it will make you sick of art.
myriam [email] said at 5:59 PM 02-23-2005:
ok just reserved a rental car. anyone know any sure-fire parking spots? the last time i drove in NY i got an $85 ticket. 5 minutes before i got to my car. to leave the city entirely. grumble grumble.
nathan [email] said at 6:27 PM 02-23-2005:
    that's a tough one
cecil [email] said at 6:44 PM 02-23-2005:
you really need a car? I've seen four-leaf clovers but I've never seen an empty parking space in Manhattan.
myriam [email] said at 6:51 PM 02-23-2005:
well, the chinatown bus is $15.50 each way. For two people, that equals $62. The bus ride is 4.5 hours, and you have to be there a half hour ahead of time, totalling 10 hours total for transportation. For $99, including tax, I can get the car for the whole weekend, including driving around Boston in it for a day (WOOHOO, GROCERY TIME! NO MORE HAULING 10 PLASTIC BAGS THAT BITE INTO MY WRISTS, CLIMBING OVER SNOWBANKS WITH THEM TRAILING IN THE DIRT BEHIND ME, AND FREEZING MY UNPOCKETED HANDS OFF!) and my total transportation time will shrink to 7 hours. Plus, I haven't driven in a really long time, and I LOVE IT. CD PLAYER IN THE CAR! NO SMELLY BUS PEOPLE!
cecil [email] said at 6:55 PM 02-23-2005:
ah, you've given this a little bit of thought then.
nathan [email] said at 1:03 PM 02-24-2005:
I died four times on a Chinatown bus from Boston.
The time to park in NYC is at 6pm or 7pm when the regulations change, especially around Union Square.
myriam [email] said at 1:12 PM 02-24-2005:
          Died four times?

Well, now the bf is protesting that he doesn't want to deal with the hassle of driving, and despite the fact that I will be both paying for it and doing the actual driving, he wants to take the bus.

Since you've had experience of the bus, and getting around nyc, can you offer a recommendation of which method is preferable?

          Thanks for the help, nathan!
nathan [email] said at 1:56 PM 02-24-2005:
Coming from Boston, the driver pulled the bus to the miniature shoulder on the interstate 4 seperate times, turning off the bus and the lights chanting, "lucky, lucky, lucky." The other three times I've ridden the sino-bus have been fine.

            What about Amtrak?

I like driving in NYC. Parking can be tricky and you might end up paying to park if you're not willing to park in out of the way places.

So it's your money or your life.
myriam [email] said at 2:11 PM 02-24-2005:
              ha! sounds like... fun!

i'm ok with paying for parking. if we stay overnight we'll have free parking with a friend in hoboken, and if we go for the day (saturday) i figure it would probably only be like $15 or $20 for a garage, not a big deal. I just don't want to get another $82 street cleaning ticket that miraculously manages to trac k me all the way down to pittsburgh at an address that had no connection with any of my vehicle's documents.
kate [email] said at 6:09 PM 02-23-2005:
Noah, wouldn't you want to stop by Siné just to see it?
cecil [email] said at 6:58 PM 02-23-2005:
Myriam, this is the most blatent example of POST-JACKING I've ever seen.
noah [email] said at 8:59 AM 02-24-2005:
myriam, it has helped. But I do love the term "Post-Jacking"

Kate, I have wanted to go to sin-e the last three times i have been here, hopefully this time will do the trick.

I heard they just reopened MOMA going to try to make it there too.
kate [email] said at 1:22 AM 03-02-2005:
