I think I'm in love with a magazine

Well fuck's sake.

I just finished a free copy of Bitch Magazine that I got from the Circle of Life Foundation's Concert. That's Julia Butterfly Hill's outfit, if you didn't know. No, really, I'm from California and we don't make shit like that up.

Every feature article was smart, compelling, and made me think
A: I've thought that!
B: I never thought of that!
C: Why didn't I think of that!
D: Damn. I gotta show this to ________.

Now I have to tear it up so I can give each article to the three _______'s.

PS: They operate out of Oakland!!!!
PPS: Fuck you Bibbly.
PPPS: Just watched the Sopranos season 2 scene where Christopher does the "Conversation with no words" exercise in his acting class.
And the other guy goes: "A."
And Christopher proceeds to beat the shit out of him. I've seen it 5 times and I still laughed out loud.

I remember reading that magazine because they had an interview with thurston moore and kim gordon, must have been like 97?

teh abortion t-shirt idea is interesting and totally messes with my preconceptions about shit.

except my notion of ani difranco wearing one
mary [email] said at 12:09 PM 01-04-2005:
Bitch is the only magazine I actually keep all my back issues. The people who run it are pretty swell. I wrote a story for The Post about one of the founders.

See if you can get your hands on the Appetite issue. That's been the best one, I think.
brandon [email] said at 4:20 PM 01-04-2005:
I don't know Jake, the issues I've read of it are strictly Women's and Gender Studies 1001 level. Stuff that went out of intellectual and feminist fashion when Gloria Steinem's tits began to drop, oh and ads for dykes hoping to become the second coming of Ani Difranco, and ewww, those gross reusable tubs for collecting your menses.

There are worse things out there, sure. But, well, it's your money to waste.
jake [email] said at 4:32 PM 01-04-2005:
That's the rep I'd always heard. This issue was the first I ever read, and it didn't display any of that. The analysis of Reality Porn would have been a perfect opportunity for a rant on porn=mysogeny=rape, but instead it was a very smart piece about the the collision of suspension-of-disbelief with statutory and other sexual laws.
brandon [email] said at 5:10 PM 01-04-2005:
That may be true for the isolated piece, but I read it for a couple of years and found, for consistency, more sophisticated, fresh and compelling thought in YM COSMO and GQ. I think it's another case of a niche mag enjoying more prestige than it deserves.
jake [email] said at 6:20 PM 01-04-2005:
The whole mag was great. I'm really not kidding about having to tear it up to share it--my Unitarian minister friend will love the piece on religious blogs, my Harvard film studies friend will love the piece on the Stepford Wives, and I want to curl up in bed again with the Garofalo interview...

Anyway I'm getting a free 4 issue subscription, so I'll keep you posted.

I once had a love affair with a magazine.
kiche [email] said at 6:31 PM 01-04-2005:
i bought "the smart issue" of bitch magazine.

it was kind of interesting, but it didn't impress me enough to want to buy another issue.

i think the best article in it was the one about biases in studies that show men are better than women at science.

I met this dude at a NERD show in Vegas and he told me about a free magazine. www.ctcmagazine.com I went to the website and subscribed. Next thing I knew they had sent me a vote for Pedro shirt and some stickers. These guys are tight!
