Let's Go: Southeast Asia

+ + = AWESOME

I am looking for someone who wants to go to Southeast Asia with me this fall. One of my best friends is living in Singapore, and I’ve decided to go over there for 3 weeks to visit her and travel around to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and wherever else we think we might want to go. My Singapore friend wants to travel around with me as much as possible, but she won’t be able to take the entire 3 weeks off of work, so I’m in need of another travel companion for some mid-week adventures.

Here’s the plan so far: go to Southeast Asia for 3 weeks in October or November. Use Singapore as a kind of home base, since we’ll be able to stay at my friend’s huge apartment for free. Take a bunch of little trips around to nearby countries, destinations subject to change and open to suggestion. The main expense will be the plane tickets, because once we’re there, food and lodging will be super cheap. I’m planning on spending about $2,000* on the whole trip, cuz this is my big vacation of 2004.

(*Maybe more if I do my xmas shopping while I’m there.)

My ideal travel companion is anyone who is really enthusiastic about going to Southeast Asia. Or, really enthusiastic about going anywhere cool that they’ve never been before. Please be willing/able to do the following, as circumstances require: entertain and be entertained on the long-ass flight, drink, stay up late, play well with others, don’t be a retard about other cultures, shop, take pictures, eat weird things like exotic durian fruit that smells like rotten eggs, protect me from possible hijackers on buses (kidding....kind of), hike/climb stairs at temples and ruins, swim, lie on glorious beaches, haggle with shopkeepers and open air market vendors, use chopsticks, and travel light.

This is gonna be the trip of a lifetime. If you’ve ever considered going, or wanted to see Angkor Wat or the place where Angelina Jolie adopted her adorable Cambodian baby, carpe fucking diem, my friend!

Oh yeah, the title of this post refers to this book, which is totally amazing, and #1 recommended reading for anyone considering the trip.

She doesn't know who you are, doesn't know the other person's name... this seems foolproof to me!

Yeah, no kidding. For a good time, call this total stranger.

        Sha!

(Paging Josh, here's your Singaporean escort service!)

"me," if you will re-read the second sentence of my post, you will see that I, too, have a friend living in Singapore. Thanks for the offer, but I'm okay.
brandonA [email] said at 12:45 PM 08-03-2004:
I've got a possible SE Asia trip coming up next summer. My girlfriend takes grad classes with a girl from Bhutan (shangri-la represent!) who has offered to put us up, get us into Bhutan, and take us to the neighboring countries for a few weeks.

I've always wanted to go through India and to a lesser degree, Japan.
jeremy [email] said at 12:51 PM 08-03-2004:
you know.. if this trip was happening tomorrow i'd go. I would love to see SE Asia. The next three weeks are the only three weeks i will have off until christmas.
ed [email] said at 12:52 PM 08-03-2004:
Damn, I was in right up until the chopsticks.

Oh, and the fact that I'm dead-ass broke.
julie [email] said at 1:12 PM 08-03-2004:
Ed, I said willing/able to do those things as circumstances require. Maybe if you bring your own fork, circumstances won't require. But yeah, can't help ya with the broke thing. Can your church raise money and send you as a "missionary?"

(bracing myself for the mish-posish joke onslaught...)
ed [email] said at 1:23 PM 08-03-2004:
Well, this would be the same church from which I'd be taking time off to make the trip.

So it'd be something like this...

Ed: Can I take 2-3 weeks' vacation in October or November? Oh, and could you pay for it? I wanna go to Singapore.

      Ed's boss: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! No.
julie [email] said at 1:27 PM 08-03-2004:
Ed's boss's boss: This is god speaking. Let my people go.
ed [email] said at 3:12 PM 08-03-2004:
No emoticon or cutesy acronym can adequately express how hard you just made me laugh. That was awesome.
craig [email] said at 12:54 PM 08-03-2004:
You forget to mention all the twelve year old prostitutes.
julie [email] said at 1:13 PM 08-03-2004:
Well, I'm hoping to attract the kind of travel companion who wouldn't be into that kind of thing.

MICHAEL JACKSON, if you're reading this, YOU CAN'T COME!
josh [email] said at 2:28 PM 08-03-2004:
If I go, can I get prostitutes as long as they are of age? PLEASE, JULIE?!
julie [email] said at 2:54 PM 08-03-2004:
Yes. But you might want to rent The Crying Game before we go.
josh [email] said at 3:02 PM 08-03-2004:
Dude that's Ireland, not HOT HOT ASIA
julie [email] said at 3:05 PM 08-03-2004:
I'm just saying it wouldn't hurt you to familiarize yourself with tuck-behinds and adam's apple prominence.
josh [email] said at 3:07 PM 08-03-2004:
dude, it's a 3rd world country, if i get one of those ill just pay them the $3 and send them out to fetch another one
ed [email] said at 3:13 PM 08-03-2004:
Because it's always better with two dudes who pretend to be chicks?
josh [email] said at 3:59 PM 08-03-2004:
No, because at that those prices I can just keep trying til I find one with the right equipment.
zack [email] said at 2:12 PM 08-03-2004:
hhaha i was gonna make this joke.
cecil [email] said at 12:57 PM 08-03-2004:

I'd seriously consider it. I'll have to knock off a few Barnes & Nobles first.
julie [email] said at 1:02 PM 08-03-2004:
    Credit cards, Cecil!

You should really come, especially because the flight deals I'm looking at all involve stopping over at LAX, then continuing westward.

For some reason, it's cheaper to get there by going west than east, even though the distance is the same. Maybe because eastern-bound flights from DC go to Europe, and that's a more popular destination, therefore more expensive?

Just put aside $150 every week, and you'll be all set! haha.
cecil [email] said at 1:22 PM 08-03-2004:
Credit cards? Oh, yeah, I remember those. My 7 years aren't up yet.

It's very unlikely but the seed has been planted. hmm
ed [email] said at 1:25 PM 08-03-2004:
Damn, Cecil, you're in your 7?

Mine are just about to start. I'm *so* looking forward to it.
cecil [email] said at 2:51 PM 08-03-2004:
not literally, but I'm in "credit rehab". I'll probably be good in a couple years.
brad [email] said at 12:58 PM 08-03-2004:
I'm envious.
meredith [email] said at 1:01 PM 08-03-2004:
I'd love to go. But there's no way I'd get three weeks off.
julie [email] said at 1:08 PM 08-03-2004:
I only have 14 days of leave, which is all we get for vacation/sick/personal days combined. But really, "two weeks vacation" is all you need to have. Using weekends and a little sleight-of-hand, we can totally stretch those 14 days into 3 weeks.

2. please please PLEASE go on this trip. same friends went with their band to asia and it was equally amazing. do it do it do it do it!

i just got back from a couple of those places, so nogo for me... unless angelina jolie suddenly becomes your travel companion. also, dont forget to call me about people to meet & stay with in thailand & cambodia. by the way, outside of the food, singaBore is pretty boring, but then again i think DC is the greatest place on earth. strangley enuf, thievery corp is DJing in singaBore next month, so ill try to get a club lowdown. note the cool "DRUG PENALTY = DEATH" sign at the airport. lastly, after you leave singapore QUICKLY, EAT your way thru thailand!!!
