Aussie Invasion Lacked Firepower

So I'd been trying to get rid of the ticket I bought for the Aussie Invasion Tour (The Living End + Jet + The Vines) for about a month now... mostly because I'm not crazy about The Vine's new material, but also because The Vines have about as many ballads as they have faster (better) songs, and I positively hate (their) ballads. Ballads are fucking gay. Most of them anyway. So my brother's friend was looking for a ticket for a while, but then my brother took so long to get back to him that his friend had bought one and I got stuck with mine. And I was still whining that I didn't want to go at 8pm tonight when I decided that I wasn't about to waste $30 and effectively made myself go. I still had some studying to do (skull anatomy) so my brother and I planned to meet at St-Laurent subway station at 8:45pm, so that we'd miss most of The Living End's set.

So we get to the Metropolis and discover that the show is sold out and the place is p-a-c-k-e-d with a mostly teenage crowd (I must be old because I now despise all-ages shows) - nothing like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' show last month. So we're there with our layers of coats and all, and the place is packed, and we won't see anything unless we get down into the pit, so we check our coats and brave the crowd. If we're going to do this, might as well go all the way - so I get us 4 shots of tequila to help get the evening going. The highlight of The Living End's set (the 5 or so songs that we heard anyway) was, predictably, Prisoner of Society. Despite the hip injury he sustained while snowboarding earlier today, and despite the reservations he'd mentioned about moshing, I could see my brother was itching to get into the pit, so I encouraged him to do so. That was the last I saw of him. Good thing I had made sure he knew how to get home, and how late he could afford to leave, etc (he couldn't sleep at mine because he's got 10am driving lessons, so he had to make sure he caught the last subway and bus to our 'rents' place). So The Living End finished, a bunch of people left the pit to get a drink / a breath of fresh air, and I made damn sure I took advantage of the massive exodus to squeeze my way into the 3rd row, dead-center.

Jet played an alright set, although you could see they weren't really into it. I sort of was expecting that to be the case, because I have come across a few articles explaining that the boys were severely homesick and generally hating America (who can blame them?). And it's hard for the crowd to get into it when you keep tempering the euphoria with yet another fucking ballad. (Did I mention how much I hate ballads?) They gave us some half-hearted bullshit about Montreal being the best town they'd played yet, and I had to chuckle. Don't say it if you don't mean it. So they played Cold Hard Bitch, which was the one song I was dying to hear, and they played the iPod song that everybody knew. It was alright, but nothing terribly impressive or exciting. The (only) advantage of being surrounded by a see of kids half my age was that they were all short, so I could see alright. There was a lot of crowd surfing, so I was hit in the head by (in sequence) combat boots, cowboy boot heels, and sneakers (lots of times). Some kid standing next to me who thought he was at a Metallica concert managed to bang his head into my temporal bone, which was both painful and frightening (nothing like medical school to make you imagine the worst). My zygomatic bones also got elbowed plenty.

Then another long break to allow for Jet to pack up and The Vines to set up, which I spent looking for my brother and fighting to maintain my prime position. The Vines came on. For the entire duration of the set, except for the single encore, they alternated between ballad and non-ballad. Every other song was a ballad. The worst possible set list ever. What the fuck? Do you really want to put us to sleep? (OK, maybe it’s my fault for always skipping every ballad on their album.) Then there were some technical difficulties involving Craig's mic stand constantly falling down - it was eventually changed by the crew but not before I busted out laughing (he also was a good sport about the ordeal) – and it’s not a good thing when you laugh AT a band. Not to mention that they didn't even play Get Free until the encore, which to be fair to them, is from their first album so they don't have an obligation to play it on this tour, and in fact they're probably sick of playing it, but to be fair to us, they've never played Montreal before, and their new album doesn't officially come out until tomorrow, AND it's one of their few songs that fucking rocks.

The minute the encore ended I sprinted to the coat check (I usually linger and scream and beg for more) but still managed to get caught behind a sea of people coming down from the balcony - I waited a short 15-20 minutes before getting my coat (versus an hour after the Yeah Yeah Yeahs). I stepped out and walked the 12 or so blocks home, hoping that my brother had managed to beat the crowd. Then I emailed him the minute I walking in.

So, in short, Jet and The Vines alike could learn a thing or two from The Datsuns. Now there's a band that can sustain mass euphoria and thoroughly rock a crowd for over an hour [see previous concert experience]. And they have amazing stage presence (not like Karen O, but that’s comparing apples and oranges). And they don't have a single fucking ballad in their repertoire. I’m not against ALL ballads – The White Stripes’ ballads are great, for example. But The Vines’ ballads are spacey, trippy, shitty downers. Overall the show sucked. The bands all played short sets, the bands all looked like they didn’t want to be there (except for The Living End), and all the set lists sucked.

I hate that IPOD song. It angers me in a politico-pandering sort of way.

And that guy in the Vines is entirely too stoned for his own good. He's going to be the Brett Michaels of "I Love the 00's" (which will somehow make it on to VH-1 by '07).

Actually, I think that the problem was that Craig was entirely too sober - drinking fucking Coke while his mates drank beer.

Yeah well - adrenaline rush and alcohol (which is why I walked home alone in windy subzero weather instead of catching a bus/train/taxi) mixed with frustration - I wasn't terribly sleepy yet and this seemed like a good outlet. Still couldn't be bothered to attend my 8:30am class though.

I was 3rd row dead-center for all of Jet's set, then I squeezing into 2nd row dead-center for all of The Vines. The minute the encore finished I ran for the coat check, waited about 15 minutes, then I walked home. Where were u?

WOW! that's awesome you stayed in front... After a couple songs of Living End, I tried to find you, looking where we were before... but I was unsuccessful. For Jet I was like 3rd row for a while, I but the pushing and squeezing was too intense, and this gay guy kept trying to abuse me, and so I ran back to get some air (I could barely breathe in there) and enjoyed the music from the right side with friends Charles, Kim, Oli, and j-p that I met while I was looking for you... I was in the pit for ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL! it was soo good! Jet sounded amazing, just like on the album, but with a more violent touch! héhé I stayed back for The Vines, and I thought it wasn't all that great.. his voice just sucked so bad! screeching in my ears! anyways, as soon as the concert ended I got caught up in the line up for the coats, then I went outside looked back only once I think and started walking.. since I hadn't seen you of all the show and I couldn't afford to miss the last metro, I started walking towards berri. I met again with friends at the metro... I'm sorry we didn't get to see each other, but since you had said you didn't think you would go in front, I didn't really look for you there. I stayed back myself because my hip started hurting a lot...

Anyways, it was a fun concert, thank you for the shots and for coming, I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you did well on your presentation!

See you soon.

Speaking of abuse, some kid stuck his hand inside the back of my pants at some point during The Vines' set - he apologized, so I'm guessing it was accidental (how the fuck you accidentally slip your hand inside someone else's pants is an interesting question).

Another thing I noticed is that younger teenage boys are a lot more violent and aggressive towards girls than their older counterparts. I really had to fight off boys much heavier and stronger than myself to keep my spot - and some of these boys were verbalizing their intent to squash anyone who stood in their way of getting to the front - which might explain the pain in my left elbow and my right knee (probably some microscopic ligament tears grade 1), in addition to the usual scratches and bruises).

He apologized not because it was accidental but because you didn't like it.

Yes, teenage boys are violent. They also masturbate a lot.

Overall the show sucked. The bands all played short sets, the bands all looked like they didn’t want to be there (except for The Living End), and all the set lists sucked.

In retrospect, I'd like to revise that statement which is now appears to be tainted by the extreme disappointment that was the last band, the headliners, what should have been the apogee of the evening: The Vines. So the evening ended badly, but as I stated earlier, Jet's set, though extremely short, was "alright". And I really didn't see enough of The Living End to formulate an enlightened opinion about their set.

So in my own personal "worst ever live performance by a rock group" list, The Vines probably rank first, maybe second, just ahead of Pink Floyd (1994) [What was I thinking, seeing Pink Floyd 20 years after The Dark Side of the Moon?] and Nirvana (November 1993) [So Kurt didn't say a word or even look at the crowd (we now have a better idea of what his state of mind might have been at the time), but at least the material was good, and Pat Smear and Dave Grohl's antics almost managed to save the show]. Yes, The Vines were that bad.

Mostly it's just that they didn't play what I wanted to hear - thus my statement "What was I thinking seeing Pink Floy 20 years after The Dark Side of the Moon". They were promoting whatever album it was that came out that year, and when they did play an older song, they did so begrudgingly - their hearts weren't into it and you could tell they didn't want to play these songs for the 100000000th time - they played them mechanically, without passion. That show was more about the special effects (the lights, the lasers, the big mirror ball thingie) than the music. And being forced to sit down during a concert, and being surrounded by middle-aged men in suits smoking doobies is just wrong by me.

Just a reminder that weezer's blue album deluxe edition came out today, as did the DVD. I'll be waiting patiently for amazon.com to ship these two items to me, since there's no Canadian release planned for the DVD - so please don't spoil it by revealing DVD contents before I get a chance to view it. BTW, the DVD is dirt cheap so you should definitely get it.

Okay, okay... I'm return to my slumber - FOR NOW!
gen [email] said at 1:10 PM 03-31-2004:
So I got the Weezer DVD in the mail yesterday - Amazon.com has said April 2-7, so it was unexpectedly early. In fact, I hadn't expected to receive or watch it before my Monday neuro exam, but it was sitting on my desk and I couldn't possibly resist it for another week, so I took 3+ hours off from my study (and sleep) schedule to watch it, only to be somewhat disappointed (a lot of that lately).

I was expecting something more along the lines of Nirvana's "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!", something containing gems of personal home-video type footage, and tidbits of interviews that really offer an insight into the band. In Nirvana’s "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!" – though I haven’t watched it in ages – I remember there being this recurrent theme of the band being asked by journalists to define Nirvana's musical genre, and being asked about “grunge”, and the band just keeps providing increasingly hilarious answers culminating in a semi-musical description involving a lot of noise produced by banging on a table and glasses, and ending with "and with a twist of lime" or something similar. The Weezer DVD is nothing like that. Whereas Nirvana’s "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!" has an underlying storyline, a clear progression ending in a culmination of noise and chaos and Kurt collapsing on stage, the Weezer DVD is more like a collection of mutually exclusive scenes (with maybe 50% videos, 45% live performances, and 5% other) that are arranged chronologically – with no obvious link between scenes other than the dates given at the beginning of each scene. This lack of continuity is not helped by the fact that the various videos (that are all available to us from other sources, and that we’ll all seen before), and live performances are nearly all shown in their entirety, from beginning to end.

Another disappointment was the poor quality of all the rehearsal/recording footage from the blue and even the Pinkerton eras. I had been warned by a classmate that the quality was really poor, but I didn’t expect it to be that poor.

In short, I think more attention should have been paid to the flow of this documentary (because that’s essentially what it is), and less to preserving the integrity and order of the various individual pieces. And I would have liked to see more footage of the boys horsing around, more interview footage, more interviews of the people associated with the band, more about the story behind the expendable bassists, more about the story behind the band, in other words, more personal band stuff, less performance stuff that’s been showing on MTV for ages. However, it is my understanding that this type of footage might not in fact exist, because as the chat with Karl (the source of the bulk of the Weezer documentation) and Pat on msn.com recently revealed, Karl’s relationship with the band, and especially with Rivers Cuomo has been an on-and-off one, such that there are holes in the storyline.

I guess I'll have to read Rivers' Edge: The Weezer Story (not yet released) to get a better sense of the Weezer story.

I retract my initial statement - even though the DVD is quite cheap - don't bother getting it unless you're a die-hard fan. It's not very good.
reggie [email] said at 1:04 PM 03-25-2004:
I saw the Vines in '02 and was similarly disappointed, although Craig was extremely strunk and nerely strangled himself with his mic chord.

Like you I loved the fast songs but couldn't get into their slow songs at all. However, one good thing about the fast song/slow song set-list, it makes it really hard for moshers to get a good pit going. When I saw them a small group of teenagers kept trying to get a pit going. Whenever it started up others would clear out of the way but I didn't. In fact, whenever the little twerps got near me I just stood my ground and they literally bounced off of me.

I've read such horrible reviews for the new Vines album. I think I'll wait until I get a promo copy at work (oooohhhh I love being the Music Supervisor!!!!! On Tuesday, after I had already put aside a copy of the new Muse album to purchase we got a promotional copy from Fed Ex and guess who snatched it up.)

I haven't been impressed by what I've heard from Jet. That and I also think Jet is a boring band name.

Franz Ferdinand, now THERE'S a great band name (from an awesome band.)
