Happy birthday, gram.

Getting her hair done was something my grandmother always looked forward to. It was a big deal.

yeah, to my grandma too. her "beauty operator" comes and picks her up and drops her off. it really is sweet. getting your hair done in mississippi is a really big deal. i get mine dome today at four and i bet you five bucks it will take three hours. i remember when i was a kid, my bestfriend's mom used to take us to the beauty school to get our hair fixed. my friend always looked great after but my hair could have worn an nfl helmet without the need of the airpump device. i had really stringy fine blonde hair and the ladies loved to curl it and make it huge. they still do. i don't get why people want their hair to feel all crinkly and gross. i like mine to feel soft even if that means it has to be flat and close to my head. but that is simply my preference. still, i like to go to the salon. it is the only place i can go and talk endlessly. besides its fun cause they all think i am a freak since i don't use hairspray or comb my hair very often. by the wway, who are you art? i don't think i have met you but thankyou for being kind to my grandma....

I'm no one in particular. I stumbled across killoggs last month and really enjoy the conversations, so I decided to hang around.

I'm all for the non-big-hair stuff.

Growing up we got gassed every Sunday before church by my mom and grandmother emptying a few cans of hairspray and slaying millions of ozone molecules. I think we would all would have been a couple of inches taller except for that.

We used to give my grandmother bottles of Oil of Olay and gift certificates for hair styling. Her favorite activity was watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy (I think elders have that in common).

I started going to salons a couple of years ago. Before that, it was always a cheapie place like SuperCuts or something.

I'm not too big on gabbing at the salon... I always find myself struggling to keep a conversation with the stylist. She always talks to me about prime time TV, talk shows, and chick flicks... all of which I don't partake in. I find myself staring across the room a lot of the time.

What do you do to your hair that takes three hours? I got highlights done for the first time, earlier this year. It's too expensive to keep up with.

did they use breck? the worst was aquanet. third worst was white rain which my brother went through by the gallon in his quest for the perfect feather. my mom used to have to pay me to wear dresses and get my hair fixed. anyway, it's good to have you...

Aquanet and White Rain, now that you mention it. I never would have remembered those unless you brought 'em up.

The barber would always put that liquid (vitalis?) on the hair of my brother and me after haircuts, made our hair look like alfalfas.

do you remember that jar with the blue liquid in it that barbers would store their combs in? what was that stuff? is that vitalis? i don't know but it was creepier than the things in jars in biology lab.
milky [email] said at 3:52 PM 01-10-2003:
they still use that stuff. I think Jheri's makes it.
art said at 3:54 PM 01-10-2003:
I think that's called Barbicide (a name which sounds like it would be good for killing barbers). My current barberette Michelle uses it.

I think they call it "barbicide" sometimes.
cricket [email] said at 3:53 PM 01-10-2003:
what the blue stuff or vitalis and are they the same thing?
milky [email] said at 3:59 PM 01-10-2003:
I actually looked it up and stored an image and then posted...I'm such a dork on this site.

Vitalis is kind of yellowish, its for holding hair in place. The barbicide is for sterilizing combs and scissors and things

Why can't you find REAL pomade in regular stores anymore? The closest I found is this strange whipped stuff that smells like children's aspirin. Everything else was like extra thick hair gel. I don't want my hair crispy :( I just want it to stay in place til it grows out enough to put in barrettes.

courtney, i just go and get my hair highlighted and trimmed. it takes three hours every time though. i don't know why. maybe b/c she works on other people. i can sympathize with being quiet at the salon. but the girl who does my hair is the only woman in this part of mississippi who always has crazy hair. plus she just married a man from panama and neither is incredibly fluent in the others language. She is learning spanish, so we try and practice together and we take a salsa dance class so we've got a lot in common. she doesnt watch much television but she does watch the other women in the shop and we talk about them as well. usually we are the only two girls out of the twenty in the salon who don't go to the tanning bed.
and meenk, i don't know about where you live, but down south you can find good old fashioned pomade in the ethnic hair products section. i always liked the stuff in the orange can with the people with afros on the front. they have thick stuff, but i prefer the lighter kind b/c it doesnt make your hair all gunky.
