New York, NY for Easter Weekend

A fantastic time was had by all.

I've been to NYC 6 time in the past 6 years, 4 times to visit either Mariela & Nathan, or Hannah & Channing & Kami, or any combination of these amazing people. But neither my brother nor my parents had ever been to NYC, so I took them sightseeing during the first couple of days of my annual pilgrimage to NYC.

We did F.A.O. Schwarz, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Saks Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park on Friday afternoon, Empire State Building on Friday night, Korean at Mandoo Bar (in Koreatown) for dinner. The United Nations on Saturday morning, Japanese for lunch, then subway downtown and Greenwich Village, Washington Square, SoHo, and Chinatown during the afternoon, dinner with Hannah and Mariela in Little Italy that evening. Then back to the hotel (34th and 7th) for 11pm, grab my luggage and say good bye to the folks.

Hike it over to Mariela's (1st and 33rd) with luggage in tow. Hannah and her roommie return from Brooklyn apartment as we're still getting dressed, Bea shows up next. Totally forget to call Kami and tell her about the change of plans. All five of us pile into a cab and head to Chelsea Piers, for "Neon" themed private party on the Frying Pan (boat). Lots of neon clothes and fabulous people, 80's retro and very gay house. Dance like mad until 2:45am, then decide to move to Tiswas.

Hail cab, Hannah's roommie bails out on us. Have a fabulous time at Tiswas, music greater than ever, dance like mad, get invited to private party by DJ for the following weekend (sucks that I won't be able to make it). Bea and Mariela start showing signs of fatigue around 5:30am, so we head home. Bea splits and head to her apartment in Chinatown - something important to do on Sunday. Hannah, Mar and I all head back to Mar's and talk until the sun comes up. We squeeze in a few hours of sleep and we're all up by 10am. Hannah heads back home to change, and after we all enjoy a fabulously refreshing shower we meet up at Organic Grown for a 2pm veggie breakfast. The tofu scramble I had was good, but a little too greasy for my taste. We shop a little in Soho, Channing meets up with us, pulls a prank on me. Mariela buys red & yellow Pony sneakers. Hannah and Channing split, we say good bye, exchange hugs and kisses. Mar and I ride the subway back to hers, then we chat some more until I'm late for meeting the folks. I hike it back to the hotel full-speed, get there a few minutes after they'd called Mariela's. I barely have time to drop my luggage that we're back out the door for dinner, Haaggen Daaz, and a movie. Get back to the hotel and crash.

Wake up at 8:30am Monday morning, and pack all the luggage in the car. Run over to Macy's to check out the Flower Show and then we're off, on our way back to Montreal. Get home to an overflowing inbox and an empty refrigerator at 7:30pm. I'm so glad I don't have to be anywhere tomorrow!

Blow - ha ha ha. Actually, though I've recently learned that the Tiswas crowd is big on coke-snorting, no substance abuse took place. I had exactly two drinks that night - remember that I'm taking the MCAT in 3 weeks so I can't afford to get hungover and fall behind.

Aaron's good at getting his hoes in on time and giving me my very small percentage. And making sure I get to Hamburger Hamlet's when I'm in town.

He's got the best collection of small arms I've ever seen. As the head of the syndicate, he can make a body unrecognizable with one clip.

Art Alexakis – Supper Club, NYC 04.01.02

I hope the show I saw last night was an April fools joke. At least I was treated to a good musical laugh.

I’ve been remiss in writing reviews this past week because I’ve seen so many shows, I wasn’t sure about which one to write. I’ve been to two Allman Brothers shows, the Snocore Icicle Ball (including Spearhead & Karl Denson), Sound Tribe Sector 9, and a couple of local bands (Redtime & Gavin Degraw). All of these shows were fairly good, some of them great. I’ve chosen to spend my time writing about the sour apple, Art Alexakis.

Art Alexakis is the frontman for Everclear, a pop inspired rock band with catchy hooks and harmonic vocals. I’m almost embarrassed to say that I own a few Everclear albums. I’ve been caught more than once over the past few years singing along with a song or two. When I noticed that Art was playing the Supper Club, an intimate venue in the Theatre District, I thought it might be interesting to catch his solo acoustic take on the MTV created monsters for which Everclear is famous. I assumed that with the success of several albums, Art Alexakis, the main songwriter for Everclear, would present a polished, professional and engaging performance. Never make assumptions.
For the record, I need to say that there were only a couple of people at the show that thought it laughable, I was one of them. What I’m about to explain went over quite well, obviously I am not the target audience Art is courting. I thought something might be amiss when I noticed the line in front of the Supper Club were mostly teenagers accompanying parents. I didn’t really think much about it at first, figuring that these were just young kids with a taste for good music. It turns out they were just kids.
The Supper Club, a classy venue with superb sound, had banquette chairs set up in neat lines filling the main ballroom in front of the stage. The kid groupies filed in quickly and sat their parents as close to the stage as they could get. We went upstairs and took the more sophisticated approach, getting a table in the balcony area surrounding the main hall. After an unambitious opening act and a set break, Art took the stage. The kids and their parents went wild! I imagine Howdy Dowdy getting a similar reception in his day. There was a teenager who sat down at our table, pen in hand, creating a set list as the show progressed. I’m sure he couldn’t wait to get this set list back to his friends in Jersey.
Guitar at the ready, Art started with an Everclear staple. Actually, behind the strained vocals and shoddy guitar playing, I was able to recognize almost every song that he played. Relying on Everclear material but without the necessary studio production work that Art obviously needs to sell records, somehow, to my amazement, he was able to bring the crowd seemingly to ecstasy. With every song having strangely abrupt pauses, the crowd readily filled in (with more character) any of the song’s words that Art allowed them to sing. It was an old fashioned sing along by gosh. Before long he had ‘victims’, as he called them, coming up onto the stage to shake tambourines, dance and sing along. It was a variety show of magnificent proportions akin to the best backyard barbecue or bar mitzvah that I have ever seen. In one number he had over 10 women, who must have tipped back a few before the show, and their children dancing like maniacs on stage. There were girls from the audience screaming with glee and boys happy, in total harmony with their existence. Everyone in the house had a smile on his face, including me! But I was imagining that the men in the white coats were about to come take me away.

Yeah- I think it's the hair because I didn't notice it before in pictures. Nice, by the way. Yes, Winnie C. I see that, definately.
