Bicycling is Fun

I am really enjoying the fact that I have been on my bike a lot in the last few days. I have also been volunteering at the New Orleans Bike Project, a group that recycles old bikes. People can take their bikes in and fix them (with our help) and donate a small amount for the used parts. If they don't have a lot of money, they can donate time, just like a coop. We are also completely revamping bikes and selling them at real cheap prices. I spent all of Thursday overhauling wheels. It was great, because I never really knew how to do it, but was able to just look it up in the book and use the tools there to completely renew wheels that would have otherwise been junk.

In other community news, New Orleans Food Not Bombs is doing really well. We are looking at doing more meals per month on top of the weekly produce giveaway. We may also start doing our cooking at the ARK, a community warehouse in the Marigny District.

It is really nice being involved again. I was feeling out of the loop for a little while.

It actually doesn't seem that hard to start. You'd be amazed at how many bikes you can get donated. In fact, we have way too many bikes at our space. The main thing is getting some space and some good tools.

They have a bike co-op like that in D.C. I found out about it when I was asking around for a place to get my bike checked out.

I'm completely infatuated with my own bike. It's the first one I have ever owned. I am even in love with the bruises that cover my arms and legs from all the times I've fallen down and run into shit while learning how to ride it.

Someone posted about it on the Post intranet page:

Wanted to let everyone know about a cool shop over around 6th & Rhode Island Avenue, NW--called Chain Reaction. It's run as part of a project called the ShawEcoVillage. Young people learn how to repair bikes there. They run a shop where bikes are recycled, and they do repairs for customers as well. Their hours are limited. Check them out.

I just realized today that my bike is over 5 years old. I didn't think it was that old. I have actually put a whole lot of miles on that bike. But, I have had a couple of overhauls done on it also. I am definitely in love with my bike. But its strictly plutonic.

Can you make bikes that fall apart after you've pedalled a few strides?
I've been dying to leave a bike out for someone to steal that will fall apart as soon as they get half way down the street. It would make me so happy to see those bastards fall on their asses. It would be even better if it could make a really loud noise when it falls apart too. Can you make one like that?

The second best bike I ever had was one I got at the Baton Rouge Police Bike Auction. When I bid on it, people started laughing because it looked so crappy. It was really old and looked cool, it just needed some work. I spent $2.50 on it. I ended up fixing it up and painting it baby blue with white fenders. It looked so awesome after I totally revamped it. Then later, it got stolen. But, at least I was able to turn something that no one wanted into something someone wanted to steal.

dammit, this is all making me want a bike.

the first time i was in chicago, brandon and linus and i were walking down the street at night and some guy tried to sell us a bike, for something ridiculous like $10. it was a nice bike, too. we said no. i've been wishing ever since that i had bought it and brought it back to dc on the plane with me.

i could've even slapped some training wheels on it. how bad ass would that be....

Man, a bike gets jacked easily in BR...I had two red ones with whitewalls and fenders that got jacked.

Anyone ever seen one of their stolen bikes later on and was unable to do anything about it?

Kaycee had hers stolen and she found it and had the police take it back.

my old man lifted a black kid off of a bike that got stolen from him...he stopped the car, picked the kid up, and took his bike back.

My other friend's dad found their stolen bike at an arcade and pulled a barretta on those little bastards and took the bike. Of course, his dad then got arrested for brandishing a weapon. It was pretty funny to watch those punks shit their pants, though.

I had two bikes stolen at LSU also, including one that I think people were using as a public bike. I kept finding it near the quad. It was awesome. Bright yellow and wrapped with silver tape, spokes missing, stuck in the highest gear, no brakes. My other bicycle, which I really liked a lot was stolen out of the hallway of Hodges. I watched someone ride past on it one day - a neighborhood kid - this was soon after one of the neighborhood kids had held up Skip, so I didn't say anything. Between the stolen bikes, the held-up roomate, the smashed in car window damn - fuck baton rouge
brandon [email] said at 10:57 AM 02-26-2002:
I've always had a bicycle. It cut an hour long walk to the park when I was growing up to 5 minutes. It was sort of my introduction to things mechanical, too... oh the joys of Allen wrenches, KY, and probing fingers.
brandon [email] said at 10:57 AM 02-26-2002:
Yikes, wrong memory.
milky [email] said at 11:02 AM 02-26-2002:
lol...nah, that's how I learned about simple mechanics as well...not having sex with bikes...but fixing them.

Brandon, thanks...now I have another odd character to add to my screenplay...The Bike Fucker.
