WEEZER, Montreal, Feb 15 2002
So Weezer was today. Or yesterday, to be exact.
My brother skipped high school and came to university with me for my two morning classes, then we had lunch (Japanese) and headed for the Molson Center. We got there around 1:30pm and we were the 3rd group of people in line, with a group of 4 girls (which later turned out to be a group of 15 people) and another girl by herself (which turned out to be 5) in front. So we waited and waited in subzero weather and we waited some more until our toes were icicles, despite our tapping our feet to Weezer rock the whole time in line - lol. The drummer from Ozma came out to chat with the fans mid-afternoon ? that was cool.
Molson Center staff let us in at 6:30pm on the dot, and we just ran like mad for the stage. We were front and center, really really great absolutely unobstructed view. In fact, we'll probably be on the crowd shots Karl (weezer.com webmaster) took -I'll check the Weezer website tomorrow and post them in the replies if we indeed are.
Ozma opened, and my brother and I didn?t really like them. They just didn't seem very friendly, or interested, or into it at all. There was one darker, slower song that I sort of liked because it sort of reminded me of Superchunk. Sort of. Saves the Day played next and they fucking rocked the joint. They have AWESOME stage presence. I really didn't know much of their stuff but their performance was a treat. And they are total cuties.
Weezer came on and the crowd went mad. I'd be curious to see how many Newtons of force were being applied on those of us in the front row... who had nowhere to go but into a metal fence. The fat geezer next to me kept banging his elbow on my left wrist (which is now sore, swollen and bruised) and squishing my finger, but it?s all part of the game, right? Even the fat crowd surfer?s ass landing on my head wasn't so bad... Until this girl's intricate metal bracelet cut the fuck out of my shoulder. Blood. I mean, it should just be good etiquette to remove sharp objects: I know I always take my watch off at shows, and I even had my brother take his watch off also (after it scraped and bruised the fuck out of my bicep). It's funny, but when I got cut I felt this primal rage for a nano-second and just got everyone around me to back the fuck up (it's sort of scary when I think back on it - I didn't know I had it in me). I?m really happy I survived the 3 bands in the front row, I wasn?t sure I?d still be able to do it, given that I?m getting old and all.
Now, the moment you?ve all been waiting for: the music. Weezer played loads of songs from the blue album (almost the entire album, in fact) only a few from Pinkerton, a few more from the green album, and a few from the upcoming Maladroit. I?m not even going to try and recreate their playlist, especially since I know it?ll be listed on weezer.com tomorrow. As far as the performance aspect is concerned, it?s the weez: they?re geeks, they don?t really move around, they?re not rock stars, and they just made the stage seem big and empty ? especially in contrast with Saves the Day. I really think Weezer would be better in a smaller venue. ?.Although the size Molson Center was not nearly as bad as I though it would be: the stage was at the ½ of the ice rink and the upper upper levels were closed.
Overall, I?m quite happy and satisfied with my =w= experience. I?d been waiting to see them live for nearly 6 years, and they didn?t disappoint. Weezer Rocks!
