Bring on the Night

Sax n' Piano

I'm pleased to announce that the above photo that I shot (at Club Deluxe last December) has been selected as a top ten finalist in theBring on the Night Photography contest held by 7x7 Magazine !
7x7_cover The top ten photographs will be featured in the November issue of the magazine (which, as you can see here, has an "After Dark" theme). The issue should be out any day now... so keep an eye out for it!

Prints of the top 25 photos are being auctioned off to benefit SF Camerawork, a "non-profit organization encouraging emerging and mid-career artists to explore new directions in photography and related media by fostering creative forms of expression that push existing boundaries".

Congrats also go to my friend Derek (also known as one of the founders of JPG Magazine, the magazine that Josh is published in), who I noticed was also on the list of top ten photos for this contest as well!

I'm excited that my photography is slowly making its way into the public eye. I'm even more proud that I've been forgiving enough to myself and to my artwork that I feel comfortable in submitting my photography to these kinds of things. Self-criticism is a hard to thing to overcome.

Movies I Done Seen Recently:

Marie Antoinette - Liked this a whole lot more than I normally do these types of flicks (cough-chickflicks-cough.) I actually really enjoyed this movie, part of it had to do with the gang of gay men that were sitting in the back row of the theater snapping their fingers and "you go girl"ing through the whole movie. But I liked the way Sofia used contemporary music for the score. The cinematography was quite stunning and somehow the film was a nice thematic companion piece to Coppola's own Lost in Translation.
Grade: B+

The Science of Sleep - This movie was nice, the visuals were pretty amazing but it's stuff Gondry can do in his sleep. No pun intended. The writing was a little weak and it made what could have been another great movie merely a solid one.
Grade: C+

The Prestige - Got dang, Christopher Nolan knocks another one out of the park. This was one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen a while. Even though I figured out the twist (for the most part) about halfway through the movie was so well made that I stayed hooked til the end. Nolan seems to have an uncanny knack for casting (David Bowie as Nichola? Tesla) and I don't care how wrong he feels for the part, I'll trust that Heath Ledger will work out as the Joker.
Grade: A+

Also. I really like the Charles theater as I spent pretty much the whole day there on Sunday. I went to the Senator to see The Departed and while it's not quite the Uptown, it's still a beautiful theater. Though Josh was right (duh) when he told me the sound left a lot to be desired.

For your consideration

Does Christopher Guest keep making the same movie over and over, or is it just his "characteristic style", and if the latter is true, does it make him less of a filmmaker because he doesn't try to branch out from that style and explore different avenues?

I keep reading that many things about For Your Consideration are a departure from the other Guest movies ("it's not a mockumentary!"), but it certainly doesn't seem that way on the surface. Same cast, mostly improvised, story-within-a-story, you know the drill. Is it still interesting? Was it ever?

I liked Best in Show ok, and I saw A Mighty Wind but wasn't as entertained (though I did like Harry Shearer's final bombshell). I wasn't too keen on Waiting for Guffman. I love Spinal Tap. What do you guys think - are Christopher Guest movies played out?

Attention: Californians and those who know them

I need a job in the San Francisco area if at all possible.

I don't normally ask for assistance in finding jobs or places to live but this is urgent. Like, "Amanda is no longer able to cope with living here and needs to escape with whatever can fit in her small car" urgent. "Amanda loves her stuff but is sick of being emotionally abused" urgent. "Amanda got sucked into a shitty situation post-divorce but she is desperately trying to amend that mistake and will do almost anything other than prostitution" urgent.

Suggestion, connections, ANYTHING PLEASE. Help me get out of here before I lose the will to live completely. I'm not being overdramatic here. I am in a horrible situation that I will not delve into on the main page, my ego is pretty much non-existant at this point, and I have never moved anywhere for a reason other than school. I have about $2500 in savings and may get more if I find a bartending job for the next 1-2 months.

I also have a credit card with an $12,000 limit and am willing to use it.

If you see a place that is hiring while you are about, please get information for me. Really. This is very important. If you're at a restaurant and you notice that they are hiring cooks, ask for information. Tell them that your friend is an excellent culinary enthusiast in Wisconsin and wants to move elsewhere. Tell them that your friend has been making bernaise sauce since grade school and has yet to denature the egg proteins. Anything that you can think of is appreciated.

Killoggs helped me out once before when it bought me an airline ticket to D.C. right after I left my husband and needed to evacuate the state. I'm hoping that it will assist me again in a non-monetary manner, here.
