God... the fucking rain. It just keeps coming back, day after day. The air is disgusting and humid, you can feel the steam rising up from the sidewalk, elevating all the different smells of filth at our feet.
I can practically feel the beach when I close my eyes. I can hear the waves, and the murmur of other beachgoers who walk by where I fell asleep reading my book.
Whatever I'm reading has magnified importance now... I'm adding to my lifelong canon of summer beach reading. RL Stine to Roald Dahl to Stephen King to Vonnegut to Readers Digest Condensed Books to George RR Martin... all those books are stacked up collecting dust in my mind, in a section labeled "beach reading."
On the deck of the house, the mosquitos don't bother me so bad. They don't seem to come up here to the deck, above the stilts the house stands on. They all loom underneath, breeding in the swampy grass below.
I just smoked a fat mid-day blunt. As an afterthought, at the Dixieland convenience store, I tossed a pack onto the counter next to my booze and a crab claw lighter, as if I need another lighter. But I just lit my shit up with the claw, coughed, cooled my throat with a quick gulp of an icy cocktail, and sighed "awww yeah."
I can hear birds calling, but I can't remember which bird makes which sound. I just rock calmly, listening to the occasional breeze rustling the trees, and the unidentified bird songs.
None of that has happened yet. I'm at work right now, slowly organizing a spreadsheet, and waiting on someone to show me how to do something.
I'm proud to be here after last night... as always, my "one beer" turned into many beers, and my midnight bedtime passed by without notice. But when I got into bed, I sure did fucking fall asleep quick. And I got out of the house by 9 this morning. In decent shape. Here I am.
I'm getting my hair cut after work today. I guess that's exciting. I'll wear it down for one day, and then after I shower it will go back to looking halfassed.
However, it will look awesome when it's full of sand and dried saltwater.
