Me Sad

Yesterday walking through Adam's Morgan on the way to a porch party, I came upon a vision of absolute horror. I literally stood on the sidewalk with a my jaw dropped in pure disbelief.

18th Street Video (or as it was formerly called) Video Americain was closed. I don't mean closed as in it would open up the next morning I mean it was closed for good.

I HATE YOU NETFLIX!!!! I HATE YOU WITH A HATRED MOST PEOPLE NORMALLY RESERVE FOR RAPISTS AND CHILD MOLESTERS!!!!!!

Okay, that may be going a bit far but I really do blame Netflix for this loss. This is truly a devastating loss for me. I'm not genetically cut out for Netflix. I only watch movies when I feel like watching them and I like the immediate satisfaction of going out to the movie store and not knowing what I'm even going to check out.

I really hate the entire concept of Netflix. Call me old-fashioned, call me a caveman, call me what you will. Netflix is evil and I hate it. To me, Netflix is the equivalent of having your dinner delivered to you. Sounds like a good idea but what happens when you're in the mood for burritos but what you get is Chinese food? That's my biggest source of my anti-Netflix stance. I have movie moods. It is pretty much impossible for me to sit down and watch whatever movie is on (or delivered.)

Yes, if I want to watch all of Woody Allen's films I suppose I could arrange my non-existent queue so that all I get are Woody Allen films but what happens when I get those Woody Allen movies in the mail but I've had a bad day and what I really want is Peckinpah?

Do you see my dilemma? And I'm definitely not going to Blockbuster. Do you think Blockbuster is going to have the F is for Fake or the Complete Mr. Arkadin? Well, maybe they will but I'm not going to a company known for handing out edited versions of some films or flat out refusing to carry other movies because of "questionable content."

I'm completely at a loss. Maybe these are signs that my time in DC is at an end. No more Visions. No more Americain. No more DCCD. What next? Will they shut down the Uptown and turn it into a furniture store? Maybe Luna Grill will close and become a Caribou Coffee. Maybe Melody Records will be shut down and turned into yet another Dupont Circle shoe store.

This sucks. I don't know what to do now. Josh, Kara n Abby, are there good video stores in your hood? The last time I felt this was bad as a certain night back in November of '04 when a certain Texas son of a former president was re-elected. SPEAKING OF THAT I also discovered yesterday that my anti-Bush button on my bookbag is gone!!!!!!

Oh well, at least I'm like still alive and stuff.

Takin the China Town Express to the end!

So I'm putting together a little outting down the east coast, cheauffered by the magical China Town Express. I'll be bringing my bike along for the ride. My current schedule is this:

July 8th-12th: Richmond, VA
I'll be down there for the Double Vision Quest, an overnight camp out involving several kegs, three bands (Brainworms, Ultra Dolphins and someone else), capture the flag and all kindsa nonsense. It's also a benefit for best friends day. Then the 11th at Nanci Raygun is Pink Razors, Liza Kate, and Beat Buttons - three of my favorite things.

July 12th-13th or 14th: DC
Not sure exactly what I'llbe doing in DC, but for the 12th at least I'll be hanging with the Pirates and their putting together a Fancy Beer Places of DC Pillage. I also hope to hang with my homie Katy Otto, Denman, and Joe if ya'll are all around.

July 13th or 14th to the 15th or 16th: Baltimore
Show me a good time!

accountants and business people...

Can you talk to me about the advantages and disadvantages of making your company an S-Corporation (S-Corp)? We spoke with an accountant last night and he recommends that we reincorporate as such, but I'm not 100% sold. The fact that every partner will be evenly taxed (or credited) for the profits (or losses) bothers me, since a big part of our business is based on billable hours - hours of work you do for a client.

Hook me up with your knowledge.

What I'm Not Spending Money On Lately

I'm trying this new thing where I take photos of items that I want to buy instead of buying them, at thrift stores and junk shops and antique stores. I used to just buy things that I thought looked cool... and this lead to a house crammed with crap. I'm trying to avoid that these days. Kind of like my short-lived plan for a "one in, one out" clothing acquisition policy, I guess.

So for various reasons (don't really need it, can't justify owning more of x, too expensive, no room, can't carry it home) these are just a few of the things I have coveted, captured, and released back into the wild recently. I hereby post them for posterity, my own sanity/ therapy, and in appreciation of all the cool shit in our nation's junk stores:

These items were spotted in Washington DC, Chatham VA, Philadelphia PA, and Richmond VA over the last few months.
