Talkin' Bout our Generation

I don't know if this has been done on here before but it's somethin' I've been thinking about recently. It seems like every year for the last few years there has been at least one movie that really is aimed at our specific generation. I'm talking about those us (and I believe that's most of us on this site) in our mid to late 20s up to those in our mid thirties. Whatever THAT generation is called, what would you say are the flicks that we help define who we are?

For instance for our parents the movies made in the late 50s, 60s and 70s pretty much tell their stories. Movies of the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s tell out grandparents stories. Even though I'm not that big into 80s nostalgia and really that movies of the 90's and the first half of the 00s hit closer to home, I'd still be willing to allow movies of the 80s in any list.

Here are a few I've thought of:

Fight Club
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Lost in Translation
Garden State
Boyz n the Hood
Kicking and Screaming (not the soccer movie but the Noah Baumbach one)
Slacker
Singles
High Fidelity
Ghost World
Pulp Fiction
The Matrix

I wouldn't necessarily limit it to movies featuring characters in their twenties either. For instance, I'd be willing to say American Splendor qualifies even though most of it is set in the 70s and 80s and features a character in his forties. That's because from a stylistic standpoint its mixing of narrative and documentary as well as its kind of free-form narrative (even though I guess that owes a great deal to Woody Allen) gives it that ADD feeling. American Splendor feels more like OUR movie than it does theirs. Maybe that's because Harvey Pekar might be the definitive slacker (and I mean that in a good way.)

Any other suggestions? Also, I'm still really not sure if we've already had this discussion before...

Furry Creatures in NOLA...

My dear friend Kelly who is from Atlanta has been in New Orleans since 2003 (I believe I have the date right) but she is an AVID lover of all furry creatures and is actively working to help save the abandoned and stray animals who are on the streets in NOLA. I will repost her myspace post cause this is germane to some of you all on here. Maybe someone else has ideas too!...

http://www.operation-save-a-pet.com

I have been helping out with animal rescue efforts to sustain the estimated 3,000 domesticated cats and dogs roaming the streets of NOLA until the trappers come. We have mapped off the city and attend to feeding stations at least once a week. There are trappers on the ground as well as a spay neuter mobile van, which is currently sterilizing the cats and releasing them back because there is no where to put them.

The other day the City Attorney released a cease and desist order commanding us to stop feeding the animals. I agree that there are potential public health concerns attendant to the operation, but I cannot accept putting an end to the effort. Also, there are a LOT of politics going on down here. The order was no doubt issued at the behest of the LA/SPCA (who are currently NOT trapping and do not agree with the feeding program).

There are simply too many animals still out there, and many of them are starving. One field volunteer told me about coming up on a yard with 12 dead cats--they had survived Katrina but starved to death.

I am posting to see if you might have any ideas for me to incorporate in a response to the City Attorney. I would like to present a case for why the operation is valuable and will succeed. Does it really make good sense to just let the survivors starve?

Do you know of any similar efforts in other disasters?

Do you have any insight into how we can reconcile the feeding program with the public health concerns?

Is there a humane, effective, and affordable way to control the rats?

Would you be willing to voice your concerns directly to the City Attorney?

Thanks Ya'll
xoxo
Kelly

just so you know

im listening to this record. white rock. its one of the guys who also does workbench, double leopards etc., mike, and some other dude. a lot of tapes and guitar noise. pretty ambient, pretty sweet. i havent listened to this in a while, but i put it on today and its still as chaotic as it was six months ago.

i have also not stopped listening to this band. i heard the show they played last week in baltimore was sold out. pearls and brass are gonna be such a big band, bringing the "heavy in faster-paced, stoner way". they riff unbearably hard.

in case you care . . .

sheehanigans

I know there's a separate news thread that's been going on about Cindy Sheehan's SOTU protest, but I thought this was such a great image that it should be on the front page.
