Le boom

So, to register for the Colorado Bar Examination, the Bar Association needs me to list the address of every residence I've had for the past ten years. Seeing as I cannot remember where I lived yesterday, I embarked into the city to gather the various addresses of the numerous places I have lived in New Orleans for the past I don't know how many years. Heres what I discovered.

4 our of the 6 places I went to were destroyed and being gutted.

On my way out, I ran into this. It is a levee they have built ACROSS Airline Highway, a major artery in and out of the city. The nice military guys in the humvee told me it was going to stay there.

And just when I thought I was safe at home on the Northshore, I was attacked by this Hurricane.

I gotta get out of here.

Jacksonville City Nights

Earlier this year Ryan Adams, along with his new band the Cardinals, released Cold Roses, a swaggering country-tinged double album that owed a bit of gratitude to the Grateful Dead. That album is pretty solid and proved to be one of his more consistent efforts since perhaps Heartbreaker. At two discs and eighteen tracks Cold Roses contained quite a bit of filler.

The plan going into '05 for Mr. Adams and crew was to release three albums, starting off with Roses and recently the second cyle of the trilogy hit the shelves in the form of Jacksonville City Nights. JCN is pretty much a straight ahead country album and it is also an improvement from the last album which is to say it's definitely Adams' best album since Heartbreaker.

One could say that Adams has been trying to distance himself from the alt-country sound of his days with Whiskeytown and the results, depending on your point of view, have been spotty at best. Heartbreaker was genius, Gold was decent, Demolition was decent, I like about half the songs on both Rock n Roll and Love is Hell. So if one were a fan of Whiskeytown and kinda missed those days then Cold Roses was a breath of fresh air and JCN is even more refreshing.

I'd say there's one dud on the whole album and that's the duet with Norah Jones "Dear John" and really, I hesitate to even use the word "dud" because it doesn't outright suck. It's just that Jones and Adams don't completely mesh. I think it's a great bit of casting, though, and I'd like to see the two work together a little more. Some of the vocals on "The End" and "Peaceful Valley" can be a bit grating but the sincerity and songwriting win out in these cases. The only other real problem I have is on the closing track "Don't Fail Me Now" where Adams' voice dips to a barely audible mumble.

What I love most about both Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights is that they both feel like actual Ryan Adams records. They sound like country-fied versions of the better moments of his previous four albums. I don't think enough credit can be given to the presence of the Cardinals. The chemistry between Adams and his band is undeniable. These last two albums are the most consistently focused to date and that includes Whiskeytown. Whiskeytown's final album Pneumonia was at often times thrilling but styilistically it was all over the map and sounds like a band that had run out of steam. The Cardinals have helped reign in Adams' instincts, to a degree, and allowed him to channel them in a more constructive fashion.

Jacksonville City Nights very easily could have been a toss off album of stuff that didn't make the final cut of Cold Roses but that isn't the case. JCN is a bit more melancholy than its predecessor, but it's not even really a break-up/my-life-sucks kind of album like Heartbreaker or Love is Hell. The introspective and often nostalgic tone of the lyrics suggests that JCN is his album about owning up the inevitability of adulthood.

To sum it up Jacksonville City Nights is the album someone would make if he moved the bright lights of the big city to escape the dusty open roads of the country only to realize that a little bit of country dirt ain't necessarily a bad thing after all.
