Last night I saw Seein Red
So, in the continuing saga that is "Punk Rock Summer" I saw more amazing bands last night. When Dozer first brought me this show I was shocked. I thought,"What is a legendary band like this doing at the Warehouse." I had no idea that they were even together. I joked with Dozer about this being their reunion tour and he just responded,"They never broke up, they just didn't tour for nine years." And the first one back on the road, they decide to play the Warehouse. Sometimes I really do feel lucky to have this position.
Even though Seein Red played an amazing and spirited set, even by youthfull standards, not to mention for people in their fourties, the best part of the night came when I stumbled over to the Bury the Living merch table. While looking at their wares a tape jumped out at me. A warm smile lit up my face as I said to the guy working merch,"Aw, Pezz, I remember them. I loved those guys." He quickly shot back,"I used to be in that band. In fact two of us in Bury the Living, were in Pezz." Then I went headling into a diatribe about how I was from Mississippi, that I went to school at USM in Hattiesburg, and that they played there on several occasions. I have to add Pezz to the list of bands like Opperation Cliff Calvin who I have an immediate visceral reaction to when comming into contact with any aspect of them. I mean, yes, they only had to come down from Memphis, but it still meant alot to us. I also remember them being the nicest people. I made a comment at some point about them getting harder every time they played, to which he remarked that, that was about the time he joined the band. Considerring the current project, it makes perfect sense to me.
The show itself was awesome; every band putting out one hundred and ten percent. Three hard hitting acts, in and out, in a very tight time frame. After the shows I met back up with the guys from Pezz, and we talked more about MS, and reminiced about time spent there. They have constant contact with a friend of mine from there Allen. He actually drummed for them on a leg of one of their tours, when they were in a bind. We talked for a long time about the shortest lived, most underrated band in MS, The Purefire Project. Allen, Lance, and Daniel were in a band that sounded like Juggheads Revenge with abit of ska cross over. When they parted ways with their former frontman Scott, they regrouped under a new name, and as I was to discover a whole new format.
I don't remember the first time I saw The Purefire Project, and I do know I had missed the majority of their early shows. Well, what can you do, I was more than halfway through college, and a busy person. The excact memory of my first attendace of one of their shows also escapes me, but what never will leave my mind is how I was totally blown away by their new sound. Not soft at all, it was hard hitting, technical, melodic music, with sceaming vocals. Years later I would realize that this was sort of the pre-cursor to "screamo." However unlike the genre we think of today, this was cleaner, with more pounding beats, and definately Iron Maiden inspired riffs. I was taken back how it would go from hard to soft, and then have these strange choppy, technical breakdowns. They had too much promise to be a local band, and ironically this would be their downfall. At some point they were offered a full tour; everything would be taken care of for them. Well, most of the band was not youg anymore. One of them was in gradschool, and another was about to become a real nurse. They had to turn it down, and in light of this upset they decided to part ways. They couldn't deal with never being able to follow through with their potential. The last show went on forever; no one wanted them to stop. We all knew that this would be the last time to ever hear these songs live again. All they left was one album, which I still own, and recently dusted off.
It's funny how with each leg of your life, bits and peices from previous periods return when you least expect it. Seeing the guys from Pezz again was a great experience for me. Talking to them about their own band, and other bands of the time brought back alot of memmories for all of us. I can't wait for the next odd hapenstance.
