Reject Pile

Is it me or is this response to my project seem a little condescending? I don't know, the tone of this letter -- especially the last paragraph -- makes me not want this guy anywhere near this project. What do you all think?

So instead of it being multiple short films it is one film but written
by multiple writers. It still sounds interesting. You need to create
some guidelines, even if the guidelines are rather loose. The average
script is between 100 to 120 pages. I think you should pick a
structure and work within the rules of that structure and divvy up the
writing to a fixed number of writers based on which ever structure you
choose. A simple approach, just for an example, is to grab 6 writers
and have each writer write 20 pages... But it could be that you use a
traditional three-act structure and have three writers write each act.
Or you can break it down by someone writes up to the inciting
incident then the next writer takes it to the catalyst, then the
reversal etc... (9 writers - borrowing structure from Robert McKee)

My personal view is that there ought to be rules. If you leave it too
open than the script may not get finished. Plus there should be
practical guidelines to ensure that we can actually produce the film,
unless you happen to be a multi-millionaire.

I know that you already have written the opening, but I think you
should find the writers, choose a structure, collectively discuss and
decide the general rules of engagement all before any writing is done.
Have everyone commit to their portion and assign a time limit so that
the script gets done in a reasonable amount of time.

As for me, I only want to commit to it if I know that it will get
finished. I'm a busy guy. It kill me to devote a ton of time to it
and it not work out.

dead hills

eric pasted this picture of tony danza falling over to our staircase going all the way up the stairs. its been there for almost a week and it still scares me. i always see it out of the corner of my eye as a weird shadow of a person. its also at just the right height, that it looks like someone sitting on the stairs. so awkward.

navies played with wolf eyes and a bunch of other bands on sunday. it was sweet, wolf eyes were terrifying for 25 minutes. i wish they had played a little longer. there was some wierd dude playing with them who wore camo pants. i was not into this dude.

i cleaned some of the house today. straightened up the living room and wiped down and swept the kitchen. the mouse made an appearance. supposedly eric caught it, then let it go somewhere really far away, only to have it find its way back into the house three days later or something. i am not into this mouse.

for the rest of the day i plan on killing some time on the couch. maybe getting some food and going to the "bank" .

Happy Birthday, Linus!

I can't remember which band you're going to see tonight. I hope it's fun and hopefully I'll see you at Ash this weekend.

sip this

wow. I just discovered Amazon's Statistically Improbable Phrase feature. It culls the phrases from the text that stand out in a particular book. This is a genius idea twith seemingly little purpose. It looks like at this point there is a limited number of books with this capability.

Some fun SIPs I found, for example:

* One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest : least black boy, bull goose loony, day room door, big black boys
* Tropic of Capricorn: sour rye, stiff prick, limburger cheese, little dough
* Catch 22: bloated colonel, tighter bomb pattern, big fat mustache, eggs for seven cents, intelligence tent
* Cryptonomicon: grand wazir, substitution alphabet, data haven, hive mind, dive plan, making license plates, strange information, main vault, math whizzes

It's also curious to see the writers who have no or very few interesting SIPs in their books (try Kurt Vonnegut for instance).

Crazy for not driving a car?

DISCLAIMER: Yes, this is another vaguely Weezer-related post. There's nothing forcing you to read on.

In the 202nd issue of AP, the journalist who wrote the Weezer article makes it sound as if there's something wrong with Rivers Cuomo for choosing to walk places instead of driving. I would like to say that there's nothing wrong with not driving a car. It's the AP journalist who is inane for making such a salient point of the fact that Mr. Cuomo sold his car(s) and moved close to work to be able to walk places instead of driving. As if walking was unthinkable and abnormal. The journalist using up space in an article on Weezer to stress this triviality shows how little substance there is in his article.

I know of many people - among them physicians and college professors - who for various reasons have bought a house closer to work so as to be able to walk to work. Many were motivated by personal health concerns, and given the known adverse health effects of our modern sedentary lifestyles, it makes a lot of sense to integrate more physical activity into our daily living. In fact, this type of regular "basal" physical activity is thought to have a greater impact on health outcomes than the occasional "working out at the gym" type of physical activity. There's also a whole body of research on "built environment" as a determinant of physical activity, and how the level of physical activity is greater among people who live close to facilities enabling physical activity.

I'm 27 and I've never owned a car for various health, ecological, and social reasons. And I live within walking distance of almost everywhere I need to go. If Mr. Cuomo is crazy for giving up driving a car, I should have been committed years ago. This journalist needs to get out more.

help me with my homework?

On Thursday, my political science class is participating in the university's "Phoenix Forum." I am in the "The Price of Security" group because I procrastinated signing up for a group and all that was left was that topic and "Globalization: Finding a Balance."

Anyway, we are going to be discussing various issues surrounding post-9/11 security in the United States (The Patriot Act, etc.). Although I probably know more raw substance concerning this issue than many of my cheese-brained classmates who drive around with American flags incessantly shoved up their asses whilst blaring their Toby Keith in their pick-up trucks, I would like to bring more to the table than my general opinions and passionate blanket statements. Unfortunately, I also have to read a ton of Kant and Emerson, memorize a historical map, and study the early Middle Ages. If I survive that compilation of boredom without first making a brisk exit from this mortal coil, I'd like to do at least some pre-debate research.

Therefore, I summon you, oh mighty and great collective brain of Killoggs! Please respond with links, items of interest, opinions, things you read somewhere once...ANYTHING USEFUL OR RELEVANT to this debate topic. It would make me a very happy, less-"RARRRR! So stressed out!!!" Mandroid.
