I was just outside, sipping coffee, working a crossword, and getting ready to go for a drive. The neighbors were arguing about their sycamore trees. We had sprayed malathion last night and there were a number of dead bugs on the ground. Including a large brown roach, of the kind that live in our sweetgum tree, that swarm down the trunks of said tree at night, the kind that fly and grow about an inch to two inches long. It looked like a matchbox Studebaker that had been junked.
I was standing up as a yellow-jacket flew up, landed, hopped around the corpse as if sizing it up, and then approached the dead roach from the rear. It propped up one wing, then the other as if they were engine hoods. Then, one leg, another, four all together were pushed outward from the body of the roach by the wasp. It was methodical. I paused, wondering if there would be a tiny revving sound as the roach sputtered back to life.
Then the wasp began to eat or chop up the roach's softer parts. I could hear it. It was a softer version of the sound those soft, blue catepillars make when they attack the live oaks en masse every spring.
Uhm, yeah so like yesterday there was this big rally right in the heart of downtown Philthadelphia. The rally was in support of the next president ot the United States of America Sen. John Kerry (hey I'm an optimist.) It was really freakin' cool. It reminded me of those pep rallies we used to have in high school (though I'm still not sure what we were being pepped for I mean it was Duval High School after all) only this was a million times cooler.
First of all, Philthadelphia politicians are pretty amusing because if you didn't know they were politicians you'd think they were your garbage men. They all sounded like Rocky and if you think Marion Barry is a character you ain't seen nothing until you've encountered Mayor John Street.
Y'all are going to have to forgive me as I'm a bit out of practice.
Anyway, this thing was really kinda weird because at first they kept propping up one local democratic polit after another and each guy (or gal) would get up and basically say the same thing: George Bush suck and to vote straight democratic on Election day. It was very much like one of those ridiculous pep rallies we used to have in high school (I attended DuVal, not whole lot to be pepped up about.) Regardless, it was a very amusing spectacle but there were two reasons that thousands upon thousands of Philly people filled the downtown area: Sen. Kerry and the next Secretary of State (knock on wood) William Jefferson Clinton were to speak.
Clinton was really there to just introduce Kerry but he was the star of the show...as usual. His opening line was, "If this isn't good for my heart I don't know what is," good stuff. Billy Clint was pretty brief, as I said he was there to intro Kerry. The senator was solid, he was actually a little less stoic than normal. At one point in his speech he literally mocked Dubya's performance during the debates, by making fun of Dubya saying, "This is hard job. This is a hard job." It was pretty funny. Every once and a while Kerry will let his guard down and surprise you (check out Alexandra Pelosi's documentary airing every hour on the hour on HBO about this year's primaries.)
So that was that. It was pretty cool. I wore my home-made t-shirt that reads: "Liberal is not a four letter word" which many people approved. Although, as I was leaving the shindig there was some anti-abortion protesters with a big rather graphic picture of an aborted fetus with the words Kerry Embraces Abortion which made me wish I had an instant sigh making materials so I could make one that says Dubya Embraces War with a picture of some dead Iraqi kid or something.
Or something.
Oh and the week before that I hung out with ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead at a retailers meet and greet before their performance at the TLA.
True Crime & Warped Minds -- Come and Trip the Light Forensic
For the first time ever True Crime Experts and Enthusiasts get together and
talk turkey about the world's most heinous crimes and the criminals that
perpetrated them.
This multimedia show is like CSI turned upsidedown! It includes rare video
footage, live presentations, and rare artifacts, evidence, and serial killer
artwork that will be on display for examination and insight. Every show will
feature different special guests from the true crime world who will take
part in a forum discussion that will enthrall and disgust, and it will all
be broadcast live on the internet for 'Three Ring Radio'.
Nothing is too taboo for these folks, they have all been de-sensitized by
years of research and experience. See a live murder attempt caught on
video-- by the victim! Different guests in each city will explore the
gruesome details of the crimes that they have studied, prosecuted, survived,
or been involved with the perpetrators. Find out the truth, draw your own
conclusions, and hear the real facts for the first time! Forget the narrow
reports from the newspapers-- These stories prove truth is stranger than
fiction!
The event is hosted by Three Ring Radio barker Shane Bugbee
(www.threeringradio.com) and includes his wife, horror writer Amy Bugbee
(www.whoreofhorror.com). Other guests include Joe Hiles, founder of the
informative website 'Serial Killer Central' (www.skcentral.com), and artist
Doug Mesner. Several true crime filmmakers will screen movies, including
'H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer', and a rare collection of
artifacts will be on display. Be warned, some of the images presented here
will follow you to the grave.
This event is sponsored in part by REPTILIAN RECORDS and will take place on Thursday Oct 28th at the Charm City Art Space at 8 pm (www.ccspace.org)

anyway, it's pretty cool, i'm finding all sorts of pictures i forgot about. meredith suggested i post some as an excuse to tell you about the feature, so here goes:
Okay, six eons behind the rest of the world, I have seen Lost In Translation. I totally loved it. Probably because I'm old enought to BE Bill Murray's character (well, nearly), and can identify with the whole "life-weary-but-still-plugging-along" thing.
And Scarlett has been promoted from some fairly pretty chick to a total babe.
Daughters (blah blah grind, write same song over and over and have kids eat it up. neat!)
The New Flesh (my favorite band right now and will be for a long time. "intense" is barely a word to describe it. <3 <3 <3 )
The Fallen Lie (I had to go to the bathroom before writing this and I still have no idea who this band is)
Clancy Six (yours truely! we play songs that are fast and sometimes slow and usually drunk..free hugs to those who say Hi!)
Doors at 8pm Show at 9pm so you can still make it home early because you either have work/school the next day. Seriously, who goes to a show on Monday? Give me a break? Sheesh.
