quarterly report

"Which Part Did You Even Want?", ink, pencil, ink wash, gouache.
I guess I post some sort of an update about every four months, so here I am. Dunno if anyone cares to know, but I'm doing well. Can't really remember what all I've posted here in the last year or so, so here goes:

"Just Because it's Dead Doesn't Mean It's Gone", 4 color silkscreen
Had a big, important relationship over the last year that pretty much returned a lot of the bad karma I accrued from my shabby treatment of some wonderful people I loved and who loved me at various points over the last 10 years . So that's good, i guess.. heh. Lots learned and we're basically still friends, which is really good.

"Somehow I Will Get Better", 12 color silkscreen.
I'm a manager at a popular bar here in portland, and I'm running a gallery with some other talented people. I'm curating my first show there in April, and I'm really excited/nervous. I'm working on art a lot, as you might imagine. I post a lot of it at my imageblog. Just posted a bunch of paintings I did for a the show that's up now. Going to set up an Etsy shop soon to sell my art online. I DJ happy hrs at the club every thursday, which is really fulfilling. Totally different from sitting in the KLSU control booth. The weather is starting to turn beautiful again. I love this city.
Ok, that's it for now.. Sorry this post is so random and self-absorbed. I hope all of you are well and sexually fulfilled.

"Well It Sure Feels Intentional", ink, wash, gouache.
(Sorry if that's too many pictures, but I never post here so just pretend it was like 4 different posts. Lots more of that shit at the blog link above. )
XOXO
Z

300 = dumb fucking shit
(Or: IF YOU DON'T LOVE THIS MOVIE AND IT'S MESSAGE, THE TERRORISTS HAVE WON!!!!!)
Yeah.. I saw this today. It's kind of funny how INSANELY ANGRY it made me. The whole thing just came off like a big defense of GW Bush's america, whether or not it was intended. - Fight the big brown "persian horde", basically start a war based on pride and ignorance, your world is based on logic, but don't really use any, defend the world from "mysticism and ignorance", and Sparta is surrounded by AMBER WAVES OF GRAIN. At some point someone says "Freedom isn't free!" fucking ridiculous. I'm not even a really super political person and it just had me twitching with rage.
Everyone I saw it with loved it, based on the pure fact that: it was cool.
Yes, it's "COOL". There are monsters and ninjas and titties shit like that (hey there historical accuracy!!)
But god is it dumb. DUMB DUMB DUMB. jesus. LOUD. DUMB.
That said- It's a fairly successful popcorn movie, and some of the actors had charisma. The art direction, cinematography etc were all great. stylistically, it was pretty neat and most of the battle scenes were pretty awesome, but they all kind of ended up feeling really same-y and by the last 30 minutes of the movie I just really wanted everyone in it to DIE DIE DIE.
At least it looked neat? ...And I didn't pay for it.

2006 top 10 + 3 To Do
2006: Best Year EVER????
1. Moved to Portland, arrived Jan. 8th! One year anniversary this monday..Best decision I've made in a long time. 2. Got kick ass job at animation studio. Life suddenly felt less bleak than when I was catering to surly tourists at the hotel job I got upon moving here. 3. New friends/Old friend re-connections. There's a billion I'll forget to list, but Greg N, Chris B, Colin, ZP, Bak, Dylan, Sarah O, Doug, Niko, Misty, Dave & Paloma, Rhett, Stephan, Dain, Huy, Joshy S. and others make my day to day existence not only bearable but kind of incredible. 4. Dancing. This is the year I discovered I really love to dance. Something I didn't do a whole lot of before this year, and it's basically my new religion. If I don't hit the dancefloor at least once a week, I get ANTSY. 5. Being Single for the first time in 10 years. I'll always love the 2 ladies I was with (7 and 3 years, back to back), but I'm really loving the true feeling of freedom I have. This isn't just about uh, you know (which is AWESOME and could prolly be it's own numbered point here, but I don't want to seem TOO egoistical). It's a total outlook sea-change. I'm also really happy Carly and I have managed to stay BFFs despite breaking up, as it was for the best. She's cool. 6. Tuesdays at L'Astra and the Tube. I have a hard time saying no (to anything, really), but even though I've had to cut out almost all weeknight activities because of my 50+ hour a week job, get togethers of amazing dinners and drinks and dancing with good new peeps is something I'm unable to say no to. It's a ritual I pay for every wed, and I can't help it. I just have to go home earlier (and no more storefront!) 7. getting healthy/skinny(er). Eating better/dancing/drinking less (beer and more hard liquor) have all coincided to make me a happier, sassier person, and then that shit feeds back into itself and creates a feedback loop of FUN AND ENJOYMENT!@!!!!! 8. Music.... I got fucking burnt out on it being a college radio dj for 5 years (and MD/program director for 1.5 of those), but I kind of found my love for music again this year, in part thanks to dancing.. I still won't be reading the WIRE cover-to-cover again (coming from a subscriber of 2 years, and that shit was EXPENSIVE) or browsing pitchfork with any regularity anytime soon, but I've got a newfound enthusiasm for the audible treat. See also- best shows of 2006: Girl Talk, Glass candy @ dunes, Spankrock @ holocene, Dragging an ox @ Tube, Nurse with wound et all at Sabalas, Les Georges Leningrad, Get Hustle/Quintron, Here comes a big black cloud and Show me the pink at Rotture (and others but hey here's the things I can think of now). 9. Portland food/coffee/beer etc. BASICALLY PORTLAND IS GREAT FOR ALL THE STUFF YOUPUT IN YOUR MOUTH!!!!!!!!! 10. after losing steam on my comics career due to all the distractions of fun exciting life in general, Finding my footing and getting back on the horse again, creatively speaking.. Secret Voice #2 APRIL 2007!!!
3 TO DO: 1. Work harder on my comics life. Both on SV and newly hatched plans for collab with the talented Derek ballard(!) 2. Have more fun. I don't know if it's possible really, but I would like to try. 3. Stay healthy, continue to rock.

The Vintage Man
"The difference between a good artist and a great one is: the novice will often lay down his tool or brush, then pick up an invisible club on the mind's table and helplessly smash the easels and jade. Whereas the Vintage Man no longer hurts himself or anyone and keeps sculpting light."

November 3: Day of the Long Breath
My friend Mardou got This book and she transcribed the pertinent bit about people with my birthday (Nov.3):
"Nov 3 people's power of concentration are usually excellent, as are their mental and physical developement, but the expression of feelings is often blocked. They may send up a wall against any probing of their inner thoughts and emotions, resisting most personal examination. Yet they can bequite sympathetic and empathetic towards others, readily understanding their problems. Very deep people, those born on this day are nevertheless unlikely to fathom their own profundity.
Not only do Nov 3 people make bad enemies because of their physical presence and intelligent battle tactic, but also because of their satirical and sarcastic bent. They are quite capable of tearing an opponent to pieces verbally...Fighting their own intolerance as well as learning to be more forgiving, accepting and open are crucial to their personal and spiritual developement".
Your health advice is:
Nov 3 people must beware of their tendency to suffer and to control their emotions at all cost. This behavior can lead to all sorts of psychological and physical problems. Psychologically, depression and self-destructive impulses are a threat"
Meditation:
"Losing with grace can be an important win"
And, surprisingly enough, it's pretty spot on. I have been working on some of these issues for years now.. Well, the ones that need working on, like losing with grace, and trying to be less of a knee-jerk asshole. Also, my emotional distance, but that's kind of hard to "fix" when it just kind of seems natural. The end of my time in Lafayette (about 10 years back) was the beginning of a slow process of reforming myself into a more tolerant, forgiving, easy going person. Over time I've started to realize a lot of those goals, gotten better at almost all of it, even if I'm not perfect. I have definitely fallen prey to depression and self-destructive impulses in the last 5 years or so, and hopefully all the shit I've learned from that has really stuck, because I'm tired of shooting myself in the foot.
