PHILLY YO!

As fate would have it, I will be working in Philadelphia from mid-May till the end of July. Are there any Killogers that live in the City of Brotherly Love who can give me the 411 on the 215? This summer marks the tenth anniversary of my first trip to the East Coast, so it’s a fitting time for an extended visit. I look forward to many trips on the Chinatown bus to see my friends/family in NYC, and I plan on finally making it down to D.C. to see my amigos down there as well. Anyone who’s going to be around this summer and wants to hang, holla!

March Madness

In honor of my favorite sporting event, I'm posting this video of Princeton's upset of UCLA in the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Although I'm no Princeton fan, it's these type of upsets that make the NCAA Tournament the funnest sporting event to follow. Anyone can win on any given day...

A Test of Morals

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally.

The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision.

Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.

Please read slowly and give due consideration to each line.

You are in Florida -- Miami to be specific. There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of biblical proportions. You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper, and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster.

The situation is nearly hopeless! You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the water. Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury.

Suddenly, you see a man floundering in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer ... and discover that somehow, the man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is. It's George W. Bush! At the same time, you notice that the raging waters are about to pull him under.

You have two options: You can save the life of G.W. Bush, or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize-winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world's most powerful men. So here's the question, and please give an honest answer:

Would you select high-contrast color film, or would you go with the classic simplicity of black and white?

Getting Lost

In three days, I will be on my way to begin a week-long journey into one of the most remote parts of California, and for that matter, the entire country: the beautiful, yet desolate stretch of the California coastline that runs from the Kings Range in Humboldt Count to far down into Menodocino County aptly called the Lost Coast.

The entire hike is about 80 miles, and the trail ascends and descends several thousands of feet. There are no signs of the modern world in this region. There are no restaurants, no stores of any kind, virtually no people(except other backpackers), and cellphones don't work either.

One has to bring enough food, clothes, water, and any other provisions needed for survival to last an entire week.

This might sound brutal, but just look at this landscape!

I love living in San Francisco, but it will be truly great to get away from all of the big city madness for a week.
It will be great to sleep under the stars every night. It'm also looking forward to the odd phenomenon of not hearing a cellphone ring or seeing any cars belching fume for a week.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the crappy freeze-dried food we're going to have to eat every night. Ughh.
But...c'est la vie.

This is the last strech of the Sinkyone wilderness, right before you get to Shelter Cove and civilization.

Dark Juggernaut

Since college, I have always had an abstract idea that there was a centralized organization of all of the major corporations of this country, and that this organization had a serious influence on our dealings with the world. Many people call George Bush a puppet whose strings are being pulled by something far more powerful, intelligent, and all-encompassing then he could ever be.
However, I have never heard anyone able to literally name a single person or organization responsible for most of the seemingly evil activities, covert and not, our government has been involved in the past few decades.

Today, I think I might have stumbled upon one of the biggest culprits.

While googling John McLaughlin(the head of the CIA)today, I stumbled upon a speech given by McLaughlin to Business Executives for National Security, or BENS.

In this speech, McLaughlin mentions several rather cryptic and scary goals for the CIA in the coming years. It made me wonder why he would be giving such a speech to a business organization.

I went to BENS website(www.bens.org), and I could barely believe what I saw.
Their "mission statement" is to directly influence the decisions the CIA, the Pentagon, and the White House make on national security.
Their member list includes CEO's and executives from nearly every major corporation in this country, including Hewlett-Packard, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Rolls-Royce, Bechtel, and many, many, more.

The government isn't even trying to keep it a secret anymore; foreign policy and national security is for sale and business is apparently great.

Better late than never

I was bored yesterday, and I was skimming through various Killogg member's post archives when I realized that I had never made a formal introduction to Killoggs. I do know a few people on here, but the majority of you I have never met. So, accept my apology for my tardiness on the introduction....here goes!

Hello Killoggs, I'm Nelson. I have been reading the site from time to time since it's inception in the summer of 2000. I'm the notorious Rick's brother, and he's the one who first told me about the madness and mayhem going on here. Some of you also know my sister Heather(who is also a member, although she has never posted).I first met Josh my freshman year of high school. I have been friends with Jad(another rare poster) since high school. These are my Killoggs connections, and now onto random details about moi.

-I live in the Upper Haight district in San Francisco with four roomates. I love my neighborhood, and my city.

- I went to a Big Lebowski theme party with Arnie a few weeks ago. There was a guy with the huge scissors from the Dude's drugged/dream sequence. That made my night.

-I went to a show in New Orleans one night with Josh seven years ago, which was the same night he met Ben. The world shall never be the same.

- I studied in Germany and Austria for eight months in 2000 and 2001, and loved it. I want to move back to somewhere in Europe within the next few years.

-I am planning on re-enacting the battle soon between the two Yoshimi and the Pink Robot so eloquently described by the Flaming Lips on the album of the same title. I think a friend and I will do this at the Cable Car turnaround here in San Francisco. I love fucking with the tourists here.

-My favorite American writer is Henry Miller.

-I yearn for the day that I will have a head on Killoggs. The question mark is starting to drip down my spine, and it's really messing with my coherency.

-I really like Kara's writing style. I always enjoy reading her posts.

Anything else you would like to know about me; feel free to ask.
Also, if anyone else is into any shade of electronic music on here, I would be into trading mix cd's.

The man screaming outside my window

Apparently, he is in desperate need of some moldy cheese, because he's flailing from side to side, staring blankly into space, and screaming "REALLY MOLDY CHEESE....YEAH, YOU WANT SOME?? SO DO I...SO DOES THE WHOLE WORLD!"

It's kind of sad to see someone who's obviously mentally deranged, but I can't help but laugh as he prevents the tourists from taking pictures of the Bob Marley mural on the side of the store downstairs.

Green and grey

It was quite a bleak today here in San Francisco.
So bleak, that it reminded me of a even more dreary day here in June, which inspired this poem.
This city has some of the most beautiful weather of anywhere in the world sometimes,
but also has some of the worst weather also, which provides for a good contrast and is good inspiration.
Anyway, here's the poem

Green and grey
Auras of mystic sadness
Tone deaf
Yet a slow pounding noise rustles him awake

Shadows of puppets in the morning mirror
Slow yet urgent
Twinkling piano keys
Mixed in with a baby's cry

Green and grey
The children walk to school surrounded by the thick fog

Modest Mouse

I saw Modest Mouse play at the Warfield here in SF on Saturday night.
I have to say it was one of the best shows I have seen in a very, very long time.
I am not the biggest fan of thier new album, but they are an incredibly tight live band, and they put on an amazing show.
To those of you who live in one of the cities they are playing in, I highly recommend checking them out.
Hopefully, you won't have some jackass drunk and on E behind you(like I did) yelling "play 'Doin' the Cockroach'", or "Woohoo, that solo kicked as much ass as Stone Cold Steve Austin does on a good night".
He made me wish I carried a tranquilizer gun with me at all times.

6 die in 15 hours in New Orleans

This article made me not miss New Orleans as much as I have been lately.
A 63-year old man sitting on the porch of his house was just one of the victims.

Burning Man

So I am definitely going to the huge festival in the middle of the Nevada desert this year, and I was wondering if anyone else on here was going to check it out as well.
I plan on building and sleeping in a tipis out there; using cheap wood, white canvas, and red spraypaint.
The theme this year is "The Vault of Heaven".

Anyone else keen on making the trip??

peace from SF,
