Photo Booth

I've got a Polaroid photo booth. It looks like this. It takes pictures like this. I'm moving to Draper, UT. It can't come with. So I'm offering it up here to anyone in the Bay Area who wants it, complete with about 200 shots of film, for $100.

The dimensions are 6'1" tall, 2' wide, and 4' 6" long... reasonably heavy. Must pickup by the end of the month. Sooner the better.

How to do Mardi Gras, family style

Shell was asking me last night about how to prepare for her first Mardi Gras parade, and it got me going. As I was laying them down all the memories started flooding back of spending days out on the medians playing with cousins and running around between parades. Here were a few tips I gave:

  • bring lots of beer, lots of water, and lots of snacks
  • you'll need plastic bags for beads and trinkets,
you can bring home as much as you make an effort to catch or pickup
  • just bring an ice chest, like a big one.
  • you can sit on it, and fill it with beer and food... but if that's too much trouble,
    just bring a small one
  • or you can not bring food and just go get a bucket of chicken or somthing during the day, walk to Popeyes or whatever
  • chairs, folding chairs
  • get there early, and stake out a spot on the neutral groun in the grass if you can
  • if you can find a spot with grass... lay down a blanket, get comfy... then you have a home base
  • parking is the hardest part, if you aren't worried about being cheap, lots of people just open up whatever little dirt lot they have and charge like $20 to park
  • sunscreen, maybe an umbrella
  • stuff to do between parades is good too
  • It's sometimes fun to take posterboard and make a big target so the float people have something to try and hit and they'll bombard ya
  • and you have to yell "THROW ME SOMETHING MISTER!"
... it's like tailgating all day long

Man I started really reliving all the Mardi Gras good times. Southdowns in BR... Rex... the Truckers Parade... Endymion... Bacchus... Zulu. Fighting over the white pearl beads (I can remember the SMELL of those beads, the pearlescent coating reeked). Stomping on fingers if need be to get the doubloons and the scramble when you heard the "chink chink" noise when they hit the ground. The Plastic cups they'd throw were gold, your entire cupboard would be full of them, no need to buy cups. Little rubber dog poops and bamboo tomahawks were huge scores. Wearing as many beads as you could to look like Mr-T and that lasting like 10 minutes before your neck was killing you. Being jealous of the kids who had ladder seats. Chasing after bouncing superballs. All the amazing marching bands who, if you were lucky, would stop and break it down in front of you. FLAMBEAUX! Wondering how the hell all those dance teams lead by the trucks loaded with crappy PA systems made it to the end without their feet falling off. The smell of horse manure that was unavoidable to stomp through by the marching bands. Huge diesel tractors pulling giant float sculptures. The fleet of street cleaners that signaled the end of the parade. Street vendors with shopping carts loaded down with plastic horns. Buying snap 'n pops and trying to throw them under the feet of passers by. Getting a bouncing ball in a passing Tuba was like winning the lottery. Waiting at the beginning of Bacchus across the street from Tipitinas to see my uncle who would UNLOAD on us. Carrying home BAGS of beads and trinkets so they could sit in the closet to be given away next year. Riding in the truckers parade dressed as a Yam. Being a page for my Grandfather who was king of one of the local Krewes (was it Mystique?)... and having to wear tights and a pointy merlin hat. King Cakes at school. So much fun as a kid. I'm sure I'll think of more. Share your memories in a post or at least in the comments!

Mardi Gras isn't the Quarter. That's what it is to tourists. To the locals it's family time. Well... unless your in college, then maybe it's about the Quarter... and drinking... but if you are a KID... it's about family! Hahah.

And Happy Mardi Gras folks!

Get your Bone on

BoneBanner.jpg

The game I've been animating on for the past 6 months or so is out!

Bone: Out From Boneville is the first installment in the episodic series that tells the tale of Fone Bone as written by Jeff Smith. If you or someone you know was a fan of any of the LucasArts adventure games like Sam & Max, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, or Monkey Island... then you'll definitely dig this game. Many of the same creative heads worked were involved in making it.

It's for PC and is download only, and the demo is free. Full version is only $20! So check out some of my animation and help support my butt in the future at the same time, not to mention adventure games in general!

Other good news is that Steve Purcell reacquired rights to the Sam & Max license, and is going with Tell Tale Games to do the next game! This won't be the Sam & Max that LucasArts cancelled, they are starting from scratch.

Seriously spread the word to any of your gamer friends, the advertising budget is pretty much non-existent and we are relying on word of mouth with all the adventure game fans. Going to download now!

Tech help, and a new plan

Here I go cross posting again:

Spent another day at Red Cross ACTUALLY HELPING people (mostly by subverting Red Cross rules) in the River Center Shelter in downtown Baton Rouge, the biggest in the state. But more on that at a later date, I've got a new mission in mind.

As I mentioned, I've been following what Joel Johnson and Jacob Appelbaum have been doing. They are part of the CU Wireless effort to get some networks up in affected areas and help people gain access to FEMA forms, missing people databases, and generally reconnect them to the world or connect them for the first time in many cases. Read their websites back a few days and see what I'm talking about, pretty awesome stuff. They are in Algiers right now, on the other side of the river from New Orleans, in an impoverished area and have setup a network with a Powerbook and an EVDO card. Awesome.

Here is the list they posted 3 days ago of supplies they need:

-Any more iSights and power books with pcmcia (each new one is a new streaming video of the city on 24×7)
-EVDO PCMCIA cards with Verizon service plans activated (This is our uplink)
-Laptops that have PCMCIA (one for wifi, one for EVDO) or laptops with an ethernet port and one PCMCIA
-Surge protectors and power strips
-Flat Panel monitors or monitors in general
-Solar panels
-Power inverters that can tap onto a car batteries

The important thing being laptops. I just spoke with Joel, and he said they need modernish laptops with PCMCIA slots and built in wireless more than anything. These aren't cheap... obviously. EVDO PCMCIA cards with service plans are a close second in need I think.

So if anyone has any access to these items and is willing to contribute or can talk a company into donating the equipment, it can and will be used in powerful ways to give those in need a voice and an uplink to aid. Since they are a part of CU Wireless, a non-profit, donations ARE tax deductible. Pass on the word if you know anyone who could help.

I'm contacting some of their people in Ponchatoula to see if I can help them out there until I can get a car for more than a few days and head to Algiers, if I'd be of any use to those guys. Joel seems like an awesome guy, and I'd love to be a part of what they are doing in any way.

Leads, donations, comments welcome!

Volunteering

I'm cross posting this from Underachievers since most Killoggers prolly don't read it.

Argh. I walked out of the Red Cross headquarters here in Baton Rouge early today... sick of doing busy work. I've been helping run phone and data lines for IP phones for the past two days, but Vic, the retired phone guy I've been shadowing, ran out of things for me to do and had me taping up cables to the bottoms of the fold out tables they had covering the expanse of the gutted closed down Wal Mart. Combined with the feeling of wasting my time, I overheard a couple of families at the fenced in entrance asking for assistance. That being the operational headquarters, they don't have any services there for "clients" (what the Red Cross calls those they help)... so I saw them turned away and being told to call a 1-800 number, a number close to no one has been able to get through on for 3 days. One guy was pretty pissed and for good reason, he has been trying to get a family into shelters for days, and said that since the phone numbers weren't working he figured he'd come down in person to get the info... and they had nothing for him. The guy guarding the gate just avoided his questions... it was pretty appalling. I also witnessed the waste and glut of money the Red Cross has at it's disposal: We had started setting up a small call center on the fold out tables that were setup. We went to take a break and when we came back, all the tables we had sort of wired up were gone and were being replaced with brand new ones that some guy had ordered because the old ones were "too old"... which was ridiculous. They were in perfect shape, just not glossy on top. "There goes someone's relief card," said Sherman, the retired engineer and long time Red Cross volunteer I was working with.

The Red Cross had tons of satellite and database problems today and it showed... I witnessed a lot of calls being dropped. Can you imagine calling a number for DAYS at a time and finally getting through, only to have the call cut out on you?!

All that said, for the geek side of me the tech behind the operation was pretty cool to see and be a part of. Servers in shock mount crates with sat. uplinks that were plug and play, with Cisco IP phones EVERYWHERE. I wish I had my digital camera with me to show some photos of the operation floor. Pretty crazy, and very ad hoc with cables strung from the ceiling and running all over the place.

Monday morning before Mom and I went to the Red Cross we shuttled goods around for VOA which felt like helping at least. So... I'm gonna find somewhere else to give a hand. Not having my own car is a real issue around here... and traffic is ungodly. If I had my own car I think I'd head to the Gulf Coast... seems like they still have some areas in desperate need. Haven't figured out what I'll be doing tomorrow yet. Maybe I'll go back to the Red Cross and get in with another group,

SO... for those looking for places to donate and volunteer... I can't recommend the Red Cross at the moment. I'll update again if I can find anything else, I have a few leads.

NBR

I'm heading back to New Baton Rouge this Friday. If any local NBR Killoggs heads have stuff they need help with volunteer wise, let me know in the comments. My mom works for Volunteers of America and I'll be helping them in whatever capacity they need, so I might have some jobs to fill if anyone is interested. Will post if that's the case.

Get out of my head Sonny

I had a dream last night about a high school class. Apparently i was in this class and the entire thing was based around the reading of this book "Sing Your Sorrows To The Moon." It was the final presentation day, and i hadn't even read the book. I show up and Sonny is there in front of this gigantic cardboard replica of the Jeapordy board that has flippable answer/questoin tiles, and the thing is covered in this amazing zombie themed mural that was hand painted. Standing in front of it was Sonny in a tutu.

Awesome. I felt so inadequate.

Waking Records has a face

Evan's label Waking Records Now has a temp website i threw up last night. Evan's a wordy mofo, but it's a good read i promise. The best part is that you can now just click a fun times little paypal button to pay for the "Times Are Hard For Dreamers" benefit comp Evan put together to benefit the afterschool art programs at the public school in the Bronx that he teaches at. I've been there and hung out with some of his kids for an afternoon and know this is a worthwhile effort. Jenny and Kyle at Hot Iron Press did the covers for the first 500 by hand and they are kick ass. So help a lowly public school teacher out (jab jab) and buy this comp!

Josh S1sk is my hero

moonpies.jpg

My eyes glimmered with glee as i pulled back the thin newspaper wrapping and uncovered what appeared to be a yellow moon, the kind of yellow moon that is only found on one edible consumer product label... That of the moon pie. I tore the paper off in ecstasy and placed the box on the ground, circling it with my eyes as my right hand slipped my Benchmade off it's clip and flipped out the razor sharp blade. The tip was about to pierce the invisible tape as i halted... what if what was inside this moon pie box wasn't actually moon pies?! It could have been a box of unmarked c-notes, and i still would have been dissappointed had the contents not actually been 24 luscious fat laden double decker moon pies!

Josh. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I will cherish them always... or at least until this Sunday, which is about how long it will take me to get through the entire box. You sir, rock my world.

Ben, don't forget the little people

One of our own (other than Wil) mentioned on Slashdot... what a glorious day. In the review of Wil's first book, we find this gem "Cartoon illustrations provided by Ben A. Claassen III are an excellent complement to the casual essays."

Did you hear that? Our little Ben draws excellently! We knew it all along. Seriously though... congrats Ben. Will you sign my girlfriends breasts?
