Bull-Headed

Did Richard Moll die or something? Cause I need to know these things. All I know about city life and criminal justice came from Night Court. And his voice work as Two-Face on Batman:TAS was killer, too.

Unless I just didn't notice his oddly oval head up there before...

Or maybe Google has brainwashed me into believing all header manipulations have meaning.

Space-Crotch

Woo! Got my Space Ghost costume in the mail today! Yeah!

It's a little big in the upper body area. I can deal with that. The cape can hide the lack of muscles and the belt draws attention away from the gut.

The crotch area is a little funny. Sort of a little too tight. Not uncomfortable tight. Showy tight. Need to figure out what to do with that. Or I could wear the cape in the front. But then I won't be able to see through that side of the hood.

Oh...and there's no zipper or hole in the suit. So if I need to piss, I'll have to get out of the suit. Going to need an elaborate tubing system...or a sidekick .... Brak...zorak...where art thou?

So, what's everybody else dressing up as on Halloween?

Deus Ex Karpos

Hey, Killoggs! It's been a while. The man has cut down on my screw around time at work so my net presence has been down significantly. Things in Chicago are alright. Nothing new major going on, which is fine for me.

What I have to share with you today, in the category of Food:

The Honeycrisp Apple

If God wants an apple, he must eat a Honeycrisp! I discovered these a couple of weeks ago while doing my hunting-gathering. I would like to thank gene-engineers at the University of Minnnesota for giving us their state's best export since Prince. Sorta tart. Sorta sweet. Juicy/Crunchy (squirty, even). As I understand it, these won't be in season much longer, so if you can find them, buy a bushel. Foodstuff of the Month!

Cheaper than Beer

I heard a story on NPR this morning about heroin being the new crack.

They said you can get a bag at 80% purity for $4! (vs. the 70's when a 20% purity bag ran you $30).

Spent the rest of the morning trying to think of things that are cheaper than a $4 bag of heroin.

That's the way I feel after seeing this movie. I'm worn out by trying to take it all in.

More Bad Tidings

Harry Goz, the voice of Captain Murphy, passed away this week. A message from Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, co-creators of "Sealab 2021," follows:

"We are devastated by the loss of our good friend, Harry Goz. Working with him was always sheer joy, and his talent was beyond compare. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we shall all miss him dearly."

I'm bummed out. Not Johnny Cash bummed out. But still sad. Goz's Captain Murphy has always made me smile. (I couldn't find a news link so hopefully this isn't a hoax. I think this was actually released last week).

"Loving, learning, sharing, judging..."

I just downloaded every episode of "Clone High." I've only seen like 3 actual episodes but the ones I have cracked me up. I love the A.D.D. Gandhi clone and the disaffected goth-y insecure Joan of Arc clone. And the Ghengis Khan clone with the "Free Tibet" T-shirt.

Best cartoon since the Family Guy!

Boo! Weird?

I tend to avoid panic when it comes to things I can't avoid. On 9-11, when my family was calling me worried about my status, I hadn't yet been hit by the enormity of the event and wondered how they could even be concerned. I don't watch network news and I take everything I read with a grain of salt. When they found "Dr. Chaos" hiding his cyanide or whatever on the Blue Line here in Chicago last year, I wasn't the slightest bit worried.

Given that, I was sort of weirded out by an incident yesterday. I live on the north side of the city far from downtown and the loop, but had to go to the dentist at UIC which took me down, underground, through downtown, on my way there (80 % of the train system is above ground here, only downtown and a couple other places does it go below ground).

Anyway, right before I went underground, I got REALLY nervous. I'd been too busy this week to figure out that the hajj ended the day before, and just conjured up all these ideas about how I had x number of last chances to get off and run other errands, avoiding certain doom/nerve gas. I have a scarf. Scarves stop anthrax. A-OK.

I just felt really ridiculous, because I've NEVER worried about that sort of thing and suddenly Tom Ridge had me in his fist.

Anybody else experience anything like this?

Moving sucks...

...but unpacking sucks more. I finally started putting some stuff away today (I've been here a week). It's just all so neatly organized in boxes. If I could spread them out a little more, I probably wouldn't even bother.

B-Fest tonight! 24 hours of numbed-ass, sarcastic shouting, and tragically wasted celluloid.

Here's the schedule:
Friday, January 24 2003
6:00 p.m. Intro
6:05 Kingdom of the Spiders
7:45 Cool as Ice
9:25 Flash Gordon
11:25 Raffle for Door Prizes
11:45 The Wizard of Speed and Time (short)
midnight Plan 9 From Outer Space
Saturday, January 25 2003
1:20 a.m. The Happy Hooker
3:00 Flesh Gordon
4:20 short
4:30 Warlords of Atlantis
6:10 Dementia-13
7:30 No Holds Barred
9:00 breakfast break
9:40 Mac and Me
11:20 The Last Dragon
1:10 p.m. It Came From Beneath the Sea
2:30 What is Communism? (short)
2:50 Supergirl
4:50 Godzilla 1985

I'm working on memorizing the refrain to "Lose Yourself" for use at some point during "Cool As Ice."

Beeeeeeeep!

I was just watching M2 and they played the video for Moby's version of "That's When I Reach for My Revolver."

MTV squiggled up the "reach for" portion of the refrain.

What MOBY?! What will you do with your revolver?

In other news, "The Others" came out on DVD this week. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out. Very creepy. Much better than most of the garbage nominated for awards last year.

Wrap... wrap... wrap... .WRAPPING PAPER!!!

So I was in the library today browsing the shelves and I heard this odd thumping noise. Every 30 seconds or so, I heard this sound, kind of like somebody thumping coconuts at the grocery store. So I turn down the next aisle, and there's a librarian shelving books. As I continued browsing, I noticed that every time he shelved a book, he punched himself in the head - THUMP! It was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. Has anyone a name for this sickness? The only thing I could think of remotely similar was the people who chew their own limbs off and have to be restrained for protection. I wondered if this was the type of person that library work attracts, but then I remembered Brandon worked in a library and he eats things off the ground and burns himself, so maybe it's like a requirement or something.

Totally Crossed Out (Jump...Jump)

So Brandon, Don, & I went to see David Cross at the Metro here in Chicago last night. Pretty funny stuff and MILES better than his last HBO special. Lots of making fun of the Bible, Kansas City, Harlowe, President Bush, Promise Keepers, Post 9-11 Gay rollerbladers, and southern relatives.

He had a brief Q & A in which he mentioned Run Ronnie Run possibly coming out in April or June, but his tone had more of a straight-to-video vibe. He talked about doing the Mr. Show DVD commentary and said the first set is likely going to hit this summer.

He's coming DC way for you folks there. Friday night in DC at the Black Cat and Saturday in Baltimore at Ottobar. Highly recommended.

Funny movie

I saw "Storytelling" last weekend.

I enjoyed it but thought the first part ("Fiction") was much better than the second ("Non-Fiction"). It really nailed pretentious Lit fucks. The 2nd part was good, it just kind of seemed less focused.

Overall, well worth my $6.

Anybody else see it?

Fatty McFatFat

I was off from work on Monday and Maury Povich had fat kids and siamese twins on his show. The fattest kid was 6 and 180 lbs. She had trouble speaking over the wheezing. Her mom couldn't figure out that if you don't feed your kid a gallon of ice cream every day and let them eat what mommy (big mommy) eats, they might not have a heart attack by 15. The cojoined kids only had two legs and punched each other alot. It was really sad.

In other obesity news, Entenmann's (these pastries that Whoopi Goldberg advertises) were on sale at Osco the other night so I got one intrigued by its name - "Louisiana Crunch." It was this poundcakey business with a sticky-sugary outside, but it wasn't crunchy and I failed to see the Louisiana connection? I don't think they bake it there. Does Louisiana have some kind of poundcake rights that I don't know about? Maybe it's like a Shreveport thing or something. I don't know anything about life up there.

Despite my perplexity, I could still rest easy with its sugary goodness storing itself into my fat cells.

A.C. Artificial CRAP

Okay, folks. Brandon and I just got back from seeing A.I. and we agree on this. You should only see this movie if you have a)small boy fetish or b)retarded children. Then, you might find something interesting. Otherwise, STAY AWAY! You will not regret it. I wish I would have. I was, however, misled by a couple of so-called "critics" (the non-fictional possibly paid off type). This movie only gets worse as it goes on. Fuck Kubrick. This movie smells worse than his rotting corpse. Fuck Speilberg. I'm guessing Kate Capshaw must have been distracting Speilberg with amazing mind-blowing head or something cause he was definitely asleep at the wheel when he even agreed to this project. I'd elaborate but that might actually make you curious to see it. Which you shouldn't. Instead, go see Pootie Tang. Or Anniversary Party. Or floss. All these would probably be better than spending 2 1/2 hours watching A.I.

Sugar....ahh...honey, honey

Went to see the Apples in Stereo at the Indie Pop Festival the other night. Apples were cool but even BETTER was this band from Vancouver, B.C., called The Salteens, a five piece, 4 guy/1 girl, keyboarded, harmonic sugar pop explosion. Lots of "ooh wahs" and "doo doos." They even have a song called "Bubba Da." If it's your kind of thing, definitely check them out if they show up in your town. They're going to be in Toronto, Ontario, Arlington, Va., and Brooklyn in the first week of June.

Honky Tonk Babylon

The strangest thing happened to me last night. After checking out the Memorial Day fireworks bonanza down on the pier and being kicked out of several closing bars, a few friends and I found ourselves wandering the city looking for a late-night joint. We came across this place called Carol's Pub in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago which is, in certain blocks, kind of a mini-barrio/crack den. So anyway, we walk into this joint expecting one thing and found something else entirely:

On stage, there's this country cover band with the bass turned up way too loud and a tone deaf singer. I look around and it's like Archie Bunker's Place got co-opted by the "Over-the-state-line-let's get away from John Lithgow" joint from Footloose. There are some depressing looking old men at the bar that look like they may have been there since the Nixon administration, this old lady who kept rubbing her face alot, some trashy/hot chicas (sometimes it's hard to tell), some Punks, a group of what looked like-lost accountants, a handful of mullets, and quite a few middle aged skanky looking pear shaped, wide-ass divorcee types. And the divorcees liked to dance. One of them by herself. Alot. And she was wearing a "Kiss My Bass" t-shirt. It had a picture of a bass on it.

It was like space and time were ripped open by the gods and got stitched up with pieces of Kentucky. It was great! Scary. But great. One of the punk girls was even kinda cute. The band didn't cover Dolly Parton's "Jolene" though. That was kinda disappointing.

9-Year-Old Dies Playing "Superman" in Bronx

May 28, 2001 6:41 am
NEW YORK (AP) -- A nine-year-old boy from the Bronx who was taken to the hospital Sunday night after falling from a rooftop five stories high has died.

Julian Roman was playing with friends, said Det. Eugene Canapi, a New York City police spokesman. The children were trying to jump from one rooftop to another in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx when Roman fell, Canapi said. Witnesses say the boy yelled, "look I'm Superman," before he fell.

Roman, who turned nine earlier this month, was taken to Jacobi Hospital where he was listed in critical condition before he died just after 11:30 Sunday night, Canapi said.

I wish there a way to turn that damn grin of my Killoggs face sometimes.
