Emmanuel's (Mono) Spot

To the few of you who have encountered Mono (emmanuel on here, though he has only posted a few times), he opened a carry-out/bar/eatery in York, PA called the Stadium Grille. I went and checked it out with friends Mike Mann and Henry while back in PA last week. The neighborhood it is in isn't the best but it's right around the corner from the York baseball stadium. I was served with one of the best slices of pizza that I have ever had there. It is a great feeling to see your friends taking risks and carving something out for themselves. Anyone that is in the area for any reason should stop by: website

Me 'n' Blue Morpho

Last weekend Megan and I traveled to a butterfly conservatory called Magic Wings near Deerfield, MA. It was a pretty fun experience. People were giggling like four years olds as butterflies and moths flew into their face/eyes/ears/nostrils and suckled the sweet nectar of nearby sugary fluid-soaked sponges. The bright blue ones ("Blue Morphos") were very interested in my green tshirt. Also present were quails, parrots and a few lizards. The place definitely had a weird faerie vibe, but i guess that's the point. It was a random day trip but was worth the hour or so drive. Other offbeat attractions of note are "Dr. Spooky's Animal Museum" (weird halloween themed stuffed animal gallery) and about three hundred "fossil emporiums". Also the home of the Yankee Candle.

Crazy roommate situation

When I moved to Mass., Megan had to stay behind in Baltimore to finish out the school year. She decided to rent out the spare bedroom to a girl she worked with. It was an informal arrangement and we didn't notify our housing management. The rest is down hill. I will describe the rest in chronilogical order:

-Girl gets fired one week after moving in.
-Girl drinks a bottle of my vodka that was in the freezer with some pills and spends a few days in the hospital. Tells Megan it was because "nobody was home".
-Girl gets new job at a clothing store near DC.
-Girl has nervous breakdown or somesuch at work a week after starting. An ambulance is called. She spends the next week in a facility.
-After hospital incident, girl has been spending 12 hours a day going to a hospital for some outpatient program because she was dangerously underweight and unstable. She is attempting to get disability but i dont think she's been approved. This could be because she has used it many times in the past.
-At this point she is behind a month's rent and a month + some in utilities.
-Megan gives her a few deadlines to pay what is owed, but girl still doesn't have the money
-After the final deadline is reached (last night), girl asks for more time. Megan is firm and says no. Girl states that she will have to live on the street and suggested that she will have to become a prostitute (this girl is a big time church goer so this was a bit shocking, but I guess that was the intent). Megan still says no. Girl says that we'll "just have to call the fucking cops then." Girl says "Fuck you bitch" a few times and storms out.

Basically this girl has a lot of problems but seems to try and use them to get pity. We feel bad for her but she is really erratic and Megan no longer feels safe living with her. I am in Baltimore until tomorrow and I'm trying to resolve this now. Since she is not on the lease and has no hope of paying us, I am considering just having the locks changed. We would be willing to hold her stuff and take care of her cats until Megan moves to Mass with me in June but we just dont want her in the house anymore.

Anybody have experience with something similar? Is there any legal problem with simply locking her out? How long is long enough to kick someone out when they're not paying rent? I'd rather not involve the cops because she hasn't actually dont anything threatening yet, but this girl is nuts.

LittleBigPlanet

A really nice guy that I met at the SIGGRAPH graphics conference this summer Alex Evan started a company called Media Molecule last year. This year his company unveiled their first game, LittleBigPlanet at the Sony keynote speech at GDC this year in San Francisco. It got a standing ovation and people are really hyping it up. I'm so happy for him. He used to do a lot of coding in the euro Demo Scene and has a very unique way of thinking about graphics in general, so i like to hear his ideas. I got to go out to lunch with him yesterday. Hopefully that all works out for him, it looks like he's going to do quite well for himself. Everyone should watch the presentation and demo from the conference here. The game looks fucking awesome.

Hot Fuzz

The most entertaining movie I can recall seeing in the past year. Pretty much what you would expect from the Shaun of the Dead dudes doing an over-the-top action movie. There were so many tiny things in this movie that made me laugh. Recommendeddd

Also, I will be in San Fransisco March 5th-10th at this. I'd never been to San Fransisco, let alone California. I would be interested in having a beer with any Killoggers in the area. What's good to do at night there? I will be inside all day.

Buying a new car

I'm in the process of buying my first new car. I have some appointments tomorrow at a few dealerships. Does anybody have any advice as far as haggling goes? I'm not a pushover but it's hard for me to be a stubborn prick too. I've done a little research as far as kelly's blue book, etc. for what prices people are paying. Share your experiences here and help a brother out

I'm visiting Montreux next week. Setting of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple and home of one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world. Nestled along Lake Geneva. Anyone ever been to the Montreux area or have an advice about Switzerland?

Summer iz over

I only have three days left in Mass. Today I get to leave work at 1 and go to some sort of go-kart track and race around. Tomorrow we have an intern dinner. Friday I only have a half day. Then it's back to MD! I'm kind of glad to be going home but not especially looking forward to my last semester at school. I had a good time here but sort of feel like I wasted my summer, as far as fun goes. Hopefully next summer I'll have a nice apt with megan up here and a grill so we can have awesome summer barbeques with all of the friends I dont have! I should probably learn how to use le grille. Maybe I can fit in a quick beach excursion before the semester really kicks in. I'm definitely going to philly either the first or second weekend in sept to visit friends there.

Scurred

So Megan has started training for her new job as kindergarten teacher at an elementary school on the edge of Baltimore. It's supposed to be a bit of a rough school ( I think it's a Title I school, meaning the government has taken it over ) but we checked it out and the neighborhood didn't look that bad. Anyway, they found a body in the chimney the day after she started training. Story here. Not pleased.

Massachusettes Broken Record

So I've been lounging around Mass for a few weeks. My mom let me borrow her mp3 player before I left because I have no cd player or radio in my car. I forgot the obscure usb connector it uses so i'm stuck with the albums that are on it. They are:

Liars "Drum's Not Dead"
Flaming Lips "At War with the Mystics"
Flaming Lips "Clouds Taste Metallic"
Brain Eno "Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy"
Thom Yorke "The Eraser"
Band of Horses whatever that album is called
Danielson "Ships"

This is especially annoying since I joined a gym here and these are not exactly workout albums. I downloaded the last three before I left because they're new and had heard good things about them. "The Eraser" has its moments but overall is pretty bland and at times even annoying. I like something about the timbre of the singer for Band of Horses but dislike the alt-country sounding songs. "Ships" has a few toe-tappers but overall I find the album irritating.

Anyway.. "Drum's Not Dead" is an A in my book. The album has a few songs which are kind of uplifting/beautiful and a few that are ominous and creepy. I think this would a good album to pop in while driving on a back country road in the pitch black night.

Mostly I'm just trying to avoid work right now.

So I got this internship...

I just found out via email that I have been hired for an internship this summer in Marlborough, MA at a company called ATI in their Interactive 3D Research Group. They make graphics cards for PCs. This is a pretty big deal because they are one of the two big companies in this area and I am super stoked. I'll be leaving behind my fiance and my friends and family but am looking forward to having some time alone to explore and read and stuff. I think that may fade fast when I am no longer spending every day/night with megan, which I have done for the past 3+ years. I am mostly happy because I will be getting paid to play around with video game technology and this is eventually what I would like to do as a career. Some people should come visit me.

p.s. mac rock is this weekend, marking the one year anniversary since I met kool kara and knew the greatness of LunaChix BBQ and Black's Run.

I still don't have a cell phone. I miss my b-more posse. I may be at talking head show tomorrow. <3

My band is playing a show saturday

Ok so my band is playing its first show this saturday in white marsh, md. The show is a benefit (though I have no idea for who) and we're opening. The other bands look pretty terrible but I am nervous anyway. The show is $10. This band features three killoggs members (Me, Emmanuel and Denny), so if you're bored and have $10 burning a hole in your pocket, come see us. We play instrumental music that is sometimes heavy, sometimes somber, but always bouzouki.

we're billed as invisible thrones but i think we've changed our name to psalms since then.

Plus we're playing on a stage at a club called "The House of Rock"

A half hour with Microsoft

Today I had a prelim interview with Microsoft on campus. I'm not sure if I'll get called back.. I made about an equal number of mistakes and clever answers.

The interview started out with the interviewer telling me about what he does at Microsoft. I asked him a few thoughtful questions about his project but I don't know if that really matters in the end. He asked me a few questions about my resume but not really anything about the projects/jobs I had listed on it.

Then he asked me for my application. I hadn't heard anything about an application or been given one. Apparently someone was supposed to have given me an application when I checked in. I had to waste 10 minutes of my interview slot filled out the damn application.

After that, he gave me a problem solving question involving polygons because my research area is graphics.

The question was: given an array of lengths constituting the sides of a polygon, determine if the polygon is valid. I managed to figure out the basic solution (add all of the sides except the longest side, then compare the sum with the longest side. if the sum is greater than longest side, the polygon is invalid). However, I forgot to check to make sure the input is even valid (if there are less than three values in the array). Most of you have probably stop reading by now so I won't bother listing the other things i did wrong/right.

It was my first interview where I was given any sort of problem to solve. Even if I get called back I probably won't take the job unless all of my other prospects fall through. I got to wear a tie though. i look sharp.

Comix

After a six or seven year hiatus, I have started reading comic books again. The two that I have been reading are The Walking Dead and Y The Last Man, which are both fantastic. The storyline in Y is one of the best that I've read. The penciling in The Walking Dead really pulled me in also. Anyone else reading comics and want to give a suggestion for currently running titles/story arcs?

Three Legged Alligators and Shit

This past week was my spring break, and I decided to visit my grandparents in Florida. It seems like they're starting to get very old very fast, so I'm trying to see them as much as possible. My flight there was plagued by bizarre delays ("Crew is having trouble getting the cabin clean") and the drive from TPA to my grandparents house revealed to me that they shouldn't be allowed to drive at night.

The weather was apparently unseasonal (i.e. rainy and chilly) but I loved every minute I spent in the sun. Coming back here has sort of depressed me. Three days ago I was on a cruise ship gambling and getting drunk with complete strangers, watching pelicans dive haphazardly into the sea. Now I'm studying for a midterm and trying to keep my drafty apartment warm.

My grandparents had moved since I'd last been there. Their new condo could be referred to as "Shagadelic". Whoever they bought it from hadn't changed a damn thing since the 60s. It's really funny to me to see my near-Amish grandfather eating dinner in a room straight off of an Austin Powers set.

I spent most of my days out on their boat, looking at wildlife and writing my thoughts down on paper. It's been awhile since I had time to do that. Here are some pictures of birds that hang out in their backyard:

Gullinules

Another gullinule and a masked duck

It was an interesting week. It's odd that being around my grandparents makes me feel like I am 12 years old again (that's good and bad) but also makes me sad because I'm starting to notice that they are not invincible.

Academic Bending-Over

So I've been the victim of an academic slighting. Research that I did at my undergraduate school has been published without my name on it. Here is the paper. I spent an entire semester working on this fucking thing and then it gets published over half a year later without my goddamn moniker on it.

I'm fairly certain that this was unintentional. My professor is pretty absent minded. Though I do get a certain satisfaction at looking at the screen shots and seeing that the students who took over improved nothing over my model.

The only reason that I am extra-pissed is that I am as-of-yet unpublished and this was published at the most respected conference in surgical simulation. It's only a three page paper, but it's better than what I've got. Bah. I should have two of my own by the end of this semester, so fuck it.
