Body Worlds 2 Fiasco

Tonight we celebrated Fathers’ Day. My brother came down from Toronto to be with our dad. We had a nice homemade dinner, and then our dad decided that he wanted to go to the Montreal Science Centre to see Body Worlds 2 instead of the usual Friday night movie. So we called the Montreal Science Centre and reserved tickets for the 7:45pm entry time. We could only reserve 3 tickets, because they refused to accept a reservation for my free entry voucher - I was told that I had to show up in person to exchange my “health professional voucher” (shown below).

So we got to the Montreal Science Centre around 7:25pm and were immediately told that the show had sold out – I couldn’t redeem my voucher for a free entry, and accompany my family in the exhibit. My family got in line to retrieve their reserved tickets and finally got some service around 7:45pm, which was supposed to be their entry time. The service was slow because there were numerous complaints being lodged. While we waited, we overheard two other groups of people in situations similar to ours – with some reserved tickets and some vouchers for free tickets – who decided to get their reserved tickets refunded and opt for another activity that the entire group could enjoy together. So, in theory, previously purchased tickets had just returned on the market. I asked the teller if I could get one of the tickets that had just been returned. He told us to speak to the person in charge of customer service.

The person in charge of customer service told us that she could not give us a ticket to us because it wouldn’t be fair to others. We didn’t understand – there were now 3 physical spots available to view the exhibit, but she wouldn’t give one to us. So we asked to speak to her superior.

The second person in charge of customer service, presumably higher in the hierarchy, told us that the reason she could not issue us the tickets was that they had been booked through the online ticketing network, and that until the online ticketing network processed the refund and released the spots, it was impossible for her to generate new tickets for anyone to purchase – the computer was still showing the exhibit as sold out. We refused to let some IT limitation prevent willing customers from attending the exhibit, and we asked to speak to the highest manager in charge.

After much waiting, the manager came to speak to us. By this point, our ranks had grown to about 25 angry customers. The manager started off by blaming us for “coming at a bad time” and “waiting until the last day”, and he warned us that he would not take any special measure to accommodate any of us morons (so he didn’t explicitly call us morons, but he certainly implied it). He made no allowances for health professional with busy schedules or for unclear instructions on the voucher we received – we were just morons. He said that he had already sent another 60 people in the same situation packing, and that he had no intention of making any special effort this time around either. He argued with us that we should have made reservations, until I made him read the voucher that said no reservations were possible either online or by telephone. I argued that there were physical spots available in the museum because other people had gotten refunds for their tickets. To which he replied that he had just checked the counter and the room was at full capacity (400). We all answered in unison, “that’s logically impossible… unless you over-booked the show.” He vehemently denied any over-booking and blamed us for “latching on to words” and not listening to his explanations. He explained that when visitors spent more time than expected in the exhibit, he had discretionary power to refuse entry to ticket holders with later entry times. To which we all replied: “That’s over-booking!” But he would not give an inch – he just argued semantics. He kept blaming us for coming on the last day that our vouchers for free entry were valid, and he continued to refuse to make any special allowances to accommodate any of us. He made it very clear that we were not worthy of his business and he didn’t want our money.

In the end, at least 75 people got turned away, some of which were paying customers accompanying health professionals with vouchers for free entry. One group of health professionals who were turned away had driven 2 hours to see the exhibit. Another group had already been refused entry on two previous dates because those dates also turned out to be sold out. Everyone was extremely upset with the poor customer service endured, and obviously disappointed that they were not able to view the exhibit. Many solutions were proposed by the would-be visitors: extend the voucher validity period, issue a free ticket now for a later date, keep the exhibit open one hour later tonight and let us all visit now, etc. But the management refused to entertain any of these options. So everyone filled out a complaint form and grudgingly walked away, promising to complain, boycott, and badmouth the Montreal Science Centre administration on their poor handling of this promotional fiasco.

Elizabethtown

I like the story, I like the script. I can't stand Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst in these roles. (OK, I can't stand Orlando Bloom in any role but his goofy, effeminate self in Pirates of the Caribbean.) Susan Sarandon is good, as usual, but her performance reminded me of her equally neurotic character in Moonlight Mile. I suspect that there was some pressure to cast big box-office names, instead of more appropriate, lesser-known actors in the main roles. And the soundtrack didn't really work for me either. It's no Almost Famous, but it's still worth seeing.

BMG/Sony Copyright OverProtection Insanity

I bought Stellastarr's Harmony for the Haunted CD today, only to discover that it's so copyright-overprotected that it's not compatible with iPod products and iTunes software, only with Windows Media Player. So I can't play it on my iPod Mini, or on my computer (unless with Windows Media Player).

I am so pissed off right now. I will take that piece of shit back to HMV tomorrow and I will get them to take it back - I have no plans of being forced to buy my music in duplicate (BMG/Sony plus iTunes Music Store) to be able to listen to it. I don't even own a CD player, just a computer and an iPod mini.

Who's the genius at BMG/Sony who came up with that? I want his head. Until that happens, read the small print on the back on your Sony products. It won't say that it's not iPod compatible, but it should say that it's only compatible with WIndows Media Player.

Sony might not be doing as well as Apple with respect to portable mp3 player sales, but alienating its CD buyers is NOT the solution.

News from NOLA Doctor and Friend

My ex was doing his family medicine residency in New Orleans when the hurricane hit. Here's what he had to say about it.

Sent : August 31, 2005 8:29:46 PM
Subject : XXXX vs. the Hurricane

Sorry about the MASS email...just wanted to let everyone know that I am okay. I evacuated sunday to my parents house in Baton Rouge. We now have power and all the comforts of home. My cell phone refuses to work except for the occasional text message. So if you are trying to reach me either call XXXXXXX (my parents house, no call waiting) or you can email me at this address or my cox account XXXXXXX@cox.net (I can check both here). I don't have access to my outlook address book so I hope I have everyone's email address correct and I got in touch with everyone. If I missed someone, please pass on the info.

I have been passing the time in BR since then. For all the work folks on the list... I went to LSU today where they are moving all the medical evacuees to the Assembly Center. I went from 8 AM to 2 PM and worked non-stop. More Doctors were around in the afternoon then in the morning. But they have lots of nurses, and techs, and MDs, and volunteers, but the more MD's the better as more and more patients keep pouring in. I am planning on going back tomorrow morning. They need staff around the clock so depending on how tried I am (very now) I may go back this evening.

So everyone file this email away or that phone number XXXXXXX. It maybe a long month and I would like to hear any info anyone else has.

I got the call today. EJGH is up and running and needs help. The plan is to work in week long shifts. I am leaving tomorrow morning and bringing food, water, and enough clothes for a week. They say that EJGH has power and water and 2 square meals a day. I have also been assured that the area is very safe and secure. Needless to say, I would rather not be going, but that is the life I live. I will basically be out of touch for the week as my cell phone has stopped working. Anyone who wants to leave a message can still call my parents at XXXXXXX and I maybe able to get it. I have been getting occasional text messages also. I don't know if I will have access to email there or not. So wish me luck I'll let everyone know when I get back to BR.

Subject : Life in the Big Easy

Well, more like next door. I am working on Day 3 of Hurricane Relief duty and the hospital is doing great. We have full power (A/C), running water, working phones (including long distance) and the internet became fully accessable throughout the hospital on yesterday. I am staying in the Geri-psych unit where there is a fridge and microwave. The hospital is providing Breakfast and dinner to all everyday. I seem to be able to my scheduled cardiology rotation and my not lose any time in my residency. Plus we will be getting paid!

Yesterday I went to my apartment for the first time. For those who don't know and care to know...I live on W. Esplande on the Lake side of the canal at LaPlace St. Which means accross from East Jeff Hospital. My door was swollen so we had to knock it in and broke the jam in the process (but it still closes and locks). It looks like I had about 10 inches of water on the first floor. There is a thick layer of slimy mud across the whole floor which needs to be cleaned up. All the walls on the ground floor have about 10 inches of water damage and will need to be replaced, but I haven't talked to the land lord yet. I moved a lot upstairs before the storm and all of that is okay. I did get a rock through my upstairs bedroom window, but appears that no water came through. My couch and chair, the frames were left downstairs, have some water damage and may or maynot be salvagable. The entertainment center and bookshelf are worthless. Washer and Dryer were downstairs, don't know how they have been affected.

I went to the Levee break at the 17th street canal and it is a whole different world. Orleans parish is in much worse shape. Jefferson Parish on the whole has down trees and power lines but nothing else. Power has started coming on in various areas and one resident in out program has a house near oschner which was untouched by wind/water and has water and power right now. XXXX, I went by your parents house which seems untouched on the outside...most probably got about 10 inches of water also.

Sorry about the long email... I hope this answers some peoples questions. I do have email access now so please send me things to read so I can keep up with the outside world, since I now actually live in the hospital.

To speeddate or not to speeddate?

The McGill Post-Graduate Student Society is holding a speeddating event for graduate students and post-doctoral students. ONLY for grads and post-docs. I guess they're aware of the extreme isolation (and dismal romantic opportunities) spawned by graduate research. Then again, should I be dating another grad student in the first place? I'm curious to try it, but I anticipate a lot of awkwardness. I wish I could talk another grad student into going with me, but all the ones I know are either married or as good as married.

I'm curious to hear your comments about speeddating... Have you tried it? Do you know someone who has tried it? Was is worthwhile? Any advice?

DESIGN A BRMC T-SHIRT

I mentioned a few weeks ago we are going to announce a pretty unique competition. Without further ado, here it is... we are giving you the opportunity to design a t-shirt for BRMC. The winning design will be manufactured and actually go on sale at BRMC shows across the land! In addition, you'll meet the band who will present you with a copy of your t-shirt. You'll also receive signed CD's and the usual paraphernalia.

But that's not all: As cool as it is to go backstage to meet rock stars, we'll even pay you for your design!

So what do you need to do to enter this competition? You can start by firing up Photoshop or whip out your notepad and pen and get designing. In the coming weeks there will be a section of the web-site where you can submit your design. We'll have the specifications you'll need soon, but for now, fire out any ideas you have.

Please Note: There will be two "Design-A-Shirt" competitions; one for North America and one for Europe. Oh, and we haven't determined how much you'll receive should your design be chosen by the band and declared the winner.

Market Studies: A Telecommunication Scourge

I was watching Being Julia when the phone rang for the third time. No, I wasn't interested in taking part in a market study. The last time I said yes, I was lied to about how long it would last, I was told I had to listen to and answer every question in a long section that was not applicable to me in any way, and when I said that I had to go and didn't want to finish answering the stupid survey, I was harassed for several more minutes about the importance of completing the questionnaires. Fuck you. If your big corporation can contract out big market studies like this, they can do a better job of designing the survey, and they can give me a financial incentive or compensation for wasting 20 minutes of my precious time answering your invasive and poorly worded questions.

I conducted telephone interviews for the LSU Department of Sociology when I was a poor undergraduate student, and I have a Master's in epidemiology, so I know the importance of random sampling and fully completed questionnaires. But in contrast to corporate market studies, scientific research is blatantly honest and up-front about informed consent, and interview content and duration.

I'm happy to answer any survey for scientific or non-profit purposes. When the municipalities of Montreal were merged into one large city, the government sponsored a survey to find out about residents' satisfaction with municipal services, and I was more than happy to answer it. For free. But don't expect me to tell you how I spend my disposable income and what products I buy. Not for free, anyway. Do your own homework and stop wasting my time.

Weezer On Drugs

When you're out with your friends in your new Mercedes Benz and you're on drugs
And you show up late for school 'cause you think you're really cool when you're on drugs
And you put on your headphones and you step into the zone when you're on drugs
But the world don't care if you are or are not there 'cause you're on drugs

Give it to me
We are all on drugs, yeah
Never get enough
We are all on drugs, yeah
Give me some of that stuff

And you twitch in your seat 'cause you wanna hit the street when you're on drugs
...

Listening to a snippet of We Are All On Drugs, one of the new Weezer songs, I can't help but wonder if Rivers Cuomo has lost it. And I don't just mean his musical genius. Maybe the music journalists are right - maybe he has lost his mind. We Are All On Drugs is the both lamest and most irresponsible song ever, managing to both glamourize and obscurely diss drug use among school-aged kids. It's like Nancy Reagan saying "drugs are great, don't do drugs." What was he thinking?

Crazy for not driving a car?

DISCLAIMER: Yes, this is another vaguely Weezer-related post. There's nothing forcing you to read on.

In the 202nd issue of AP, the journalist who wrote the Weezer article makes it sound as if there's something wrong with Rivers Cuomo for choosing to walk places instead of driving. I would like to say that there's nothing wrong with not driving a car. It's the AP journalist who is inane for making such a salient point of the fact that Mr. Cuomo sold his car(s) and moved close to work to be able to walk places instead of driving. As if walking was unthinkable and abnormal. The journalist using up space in an article on Weezer to stress this triviality shows how little substance there is in his article.

I know of many people - among them physicians and college professors - who for various reasons have bought a house closer to work so as to be able to walk to work. Many were motivated by personal health concerns, and given the known adverse health effects of our modern sedentary lifestyles, it makes a lot of sense to integrate more physical activity into our daily living. In fact, this type of regular "basal" physical activity is thought to have a greater impact on health outcomes than the occasional "working out at the gym" type of physical activity. There's also a whole body of research on "built environment" as a determinant of physical activity, and how the level of physical activity is greater among people who live close to facilities enabling physical activity.

I'm 27 and I've never owned a car for various health, ecological, and social reasons. And I live within walking distance of almost everywhere I need to go. If Mr. Cuomo is crazy for giving up driving a car, I should have been committed years ago. This journalist needs to get out more.

HHH Montreal Video Shoot

So I couldn't answer the casting call that went out to all Weezer fans via the weezer.com mailing list for the Weezer video shoot at the Playboy Mansion - it would have been rather costly to fly down for one day of shooting. And I didn't really fit the description of what Boobytrap wanted for their video - I'm no snake charmer or sword swallower or belly dancer. But I did just answer the Hot Hot Heat casting call (sent out by DJ Frigid) for their video shoot in Montreal next Sunday. And they answered me right back. Yes. I'm going to be in the video! Yay! I've never been in a video. This should be fun. And Francis might be in the video with me. I will receive further instructions soon. So exciting!

I just hope the shoot doesn't conflict with the Bloc Party concert that night - Francis, Ken, and I already have tickets. Sounds like it will be an outdoor shoot, so I suspect it'll be over before 10pm.

Free Escort Services

Sunday night Hot B and I were making out on the couch, waiting for a Thai2Go delivery when the buzzer went off. To my great surprise it wasn't the Thai2Go delivery service, it was a male escort named Mike. Mike had allegedly been sent by someone named Stephanie who had paid for him to offer me his services for one hour. I don't know anyone named Stephanie, so I had to convince the supposed male escort that he had the wrong address, and that I had no use for his services. Of course the whole conversation took place in French, and Hot B had no idea what had just happened. When I explained it to him, he wanted to call the cops. In the end we didn't notify the police, but we did have a good laugh. How weird was that? Any chance that the dude in question was actually a male escort?

Be in a Boobytrap Video!!

Boobytrap are preparing for their video shoot for "Never Told" with director James Parvin. They are looking for two types of people: (1) extras/space fillers, and (2) people with all sorts of crazy talents - clowns, snake charmers, belly dancers, unusual people in a Fellini sense or just plain weirdos. They'll will be shooting in NYC the weekends of Jan 29th and/or Feb 5th. Drop them a line at boobytrap@boobytraptheband.com for more info.

Also, you can now officially pre-order their debut album "One false move and..." Go to the "tourist trap" on the boobytrap website for all the details. The album release show is set for Saturday, Feb 26th at Mercury Lounge (11pm).

Brandon and I will be there for the album release party, but not for the video shoot. All you New Yorkers should go and display your talents and quirks.

Run Over by a Bike Courier

I was run over by a bike courier this afternoon. More specifically, the first two digits of my right foot were run over by a bike courier. I coming out of the bank, standing still on a Ste-Catherine Street corner waiting for the light to change to green, standing about one foot away from the sidewalk and 2-3 feet behind a parked car, when a male bike courier ran into me. I turned my head a few milliseconds before the impact, saw him coming straight at me, I think he tried to brake but one of his hands was busy with his dispatch-phone-type-thingie, I think he tried to swerved away from me, his front wheel ran over my foot, he collapsed onto my outstretched hands, he lost balance and nearly fell off his bike, and his phone went AWOL. Obviously, he wasn't looking ahead. If I hadn't been there he would have hit the parked car and probably hurt himself a lot more. He didn't ask me if I was alright (though the other pedestrians on the corner did), he didn't apologize for running me over, he picked up his stupid phone, talked to dispatch, and left. Asshole.

Hi,

I'll be in Montreal area and would love to meet up with a local lady and go out in the city and see what Montreal is all about and have a good time overall. To do that, I think we'd have to know each other a bit better. I am 25 year old male. If you are interested then please get back to me at xxxx_xxxx@hotmail.com.

W.

What do you make of this? I think this guy is too cheap to get himself a ho. And "lady"? Who's he calling a lady? (def. a well-mannered and considerate woman with high standards of proper behavior.) You know, I only do this (taking time off from my busy schedule to play hostess and tour guide) for a few very special people - my friends. I'm not for hire.

White Coat Ceremony

The white coat ceremony is coming up soon (October 4th) and, as tradition dictates, 'we as a class' have to take an oath that 'we as a class' have written. Now since I really don't want my oath to sound like these,

The Pledge of the Class of 2004

“It is with honour that we don our white coats from this day forth. We pledge by what we hold most sacred to use it not as a shield but as a bridge to reach out to those entrusted to our care. We shall strive with passion and humility to create lasting alliances in health, pursue professional integrity and provide compassionate care for all.”

The Pledge of the Class of 2005

In honour and respect, I receive this endowment
That my elders have decided to entrust me with
From this day forth, I shall wear it
As a symbol of commitment and integrity
And the knowledge that entitles me to wear this gown
I shall put to the service of all humanity
To cure the sick
To heal the ill
And to relieve the anguish of those in pain
And I shall continue to seek more learning
As long as I remain in this noble profession
To which today I dedicate my life, all what I am and
all what I shall be
And so I swear by what I hold most Sacred
That from this truth I will not diverge

The Pledge of the Class of 2006

From this day forth, we pledge:
To uphold the ideals of honesty, integrity, and compassion imparted to us by our mentors.
To serve as advisors, advocates, and healers for our patients.
To dedicate ourselves to life-long learning.
To apply our knowledge for the benefit of society.
And to uphold the truth and tradition this habit represents,
To the best of our abilities and judgment.

I've decided to write and submit an oath myself (it's highly likely that it won't be selected, but at least I'll have tried). Even though our profession is heavily rooted in tradition, I want our oath to be creative and original, and well-written (I want to avoid last year's shopping list / bullet point style at all costs).

So my first step in this process is to open the floor to you - after all, the medical profession is one of service to others. So, what does the white coat symbolize to you? What should it symbolize? What do you think makes a good physician? What are some of the elements you think should be included in this oath?

Nation of Rock

Canada is a nation of rock. It's just amazing - nothing you'd ever see in the modern-day USA, where pop music and R&B have a much stronger grip.

I caught the tail end of the Juno Awards and, to my great amazement, I saw Montreal's Sam Roberts beat pop monster Celine Dion, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, and R&B artist Shawn Desman in the Artist of the Year category. Sam Roberts also beat Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, and Nickelback for Album of the Year.

You might object that these winners are picked by judges and might not reflect the general population, but you'd be wrong - Nickelback beat Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, and Sarah McLachlan for the Juno Fan Choice Award. Canadians prefer hard rock. I have to admit that it's kind of cool, even though I'm no fan of Nickelback.

And a truly amazing Canadian producer, Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, KISS, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd's The Wall), was inducted in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
