The Cube

Killoggs Screenshot

This weekend I decided to enable desktop effects on my home computer. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and decided to download the compiz plugins.

Here is a shot of the cube and also the water effect. With the cube effect I have four virtual desktops and I can rotate the cube to switch between them.

Howdy Ho!

Hello Killoggs!

I am taking a break from studying for my Net + exam tomorrow. Actually, I think I am done studying. I know all of this shit already. I would just really like to get this stupid exam over with so that I can stop worrying about it. Oh well, 12 more hours. After I get this certification out of the way I will be A + and Net + certified. Next year I have an MCSE bootcamp tentatively scheduled. Should be fun.

Who still lives in New Orleans / Baton Rouge these days? I am going to go home this year for Christmas, probably the 24-27. If anyone wants to hang out let me know. I have no idea what is going on in post apocalyptic Katrina New Orleans these days. Is the Circle bar still open?

Oh yeah, Kiche want to go to Austria with me? I have some friends there in Vienna, and we can make our way to Budapest like you wanted to go a few years back. Unless you already went.

This post is under 380 pixels wide.

Peace out.

Fuck 5minutestolive.com

5minutestolive.com really fucking sucks. 5minutestolive.com has the worst customer service ever, virtually non-existent.

I tried to order The Gimme Gimme Octopus video talked about in this post from 5minutestolive.com about three weeks ago. I still haven't received it after numerous e-mails and phone calls. I called after two weeks and the phone had been disconnected, and all of a sudden there was a new number listed on their site. I had to threated to cancel the charge when I finally got a hasty response promising to actually SEND the video and give me a tracking number. I never did get a tracking number or video. It's almost been a month. Oh well. I will just call the credit card company and take their charge off of my account.

I would stay the fuck away from 5minutestolive.com. Their videos aren't worth the hassle.

It has been three weeks since I ordered this item. I still have not
received it or a confirmation number indicating shipment. I have also
not received any customer service of any kind.

I would like to cancel this order.

If you have charged my card. I would like the amount refunded.

Brundlefly

I checked out David Cronenberg's 1986 film, "The FLy" from the library this weekend. I was browsing through the DVD section, and I saw it there, beckoning. I have seen it before, but not in YEARS. I wanted to see if it held up, and if this movie was still as good as I remembered.

I was not disappointed at all. I started out kind of half-watching the movie while I was working on drawings and drinking some beers, and I got quickly sucked in. Jeff Goldblum's performance was great. He looked so young, too! Geena Davis was also good, and I forgot it was she that played his love interest. I always remember Geen David as a Blonde, especially after that awful baseball movie with Tom Hanks and Madonna. Does that movie really exist? Am I imagining things? Anyway, I digress...

This movie is pure brilliance by Cronenberg. One thing about the movie I think that really works is the telepods. Those things are very insect-like and almost Giger-esque. Even to this day I think they are amazing set pieces. They are unsettling to behold, and there is no way in hell I would step into those things to be cut up molecule by molecule and spit back out into another one.

The transformation of Brundle into "Brundlefly" totally grossed me out as a kid. Watching it now, the special effects look very 80's but were very fun to watch. I love the scene when "brundlefly" sheds his last vestiges of rotting human skin to become this very large fly creature. My only disappointment, and I don't know if this is special effects related or deign related, is that the fly did not have larger, segmented fly-like eyes. One of the great things about the 1958 film was the scene in which we actually see the world through the Fly's eyes. It would have been neat to see that here as well.

This is such a wonderful movie about the horrific transformation. I don't know the entire origin of this or the 1958 film, but I wonder if Ovid's "Metamorphisis" was at all an inspiration.

This is one of the movies that would also be great as a re-make. In fact, I saw on IMDB that there is a "The Fly 2006" in the works. It would be cool to see a very detailed digital transformation into a fly. I would like to see something very fly-like and precise. I would also throw in some references to Ovid and Beelzebub.

I will probably be obsessed with insect-like characters with large beady eyes for a while.

Movies I saw this weekend

I saw the following two movies this weekend, and I thought that they were amazing. (Sorry Abby)

Boys Don't Cry

I finally saw this movie for the first time on Saturday night. I thought it was very well done, and it gave me insight as to what the mindset of someone with gender identity disorder might be like. You really got a sense that this was a boy (or young man) that was so unfortunate to have been born with girl parts. He loved girls as a guy would like girls, even defending at least one girl's honor by starting a brawl in a local dive bar. The acting was extremely well done, especially by Hillary Swank. I felt really bad for her character and what he had to endure.

The Shining

Last night I watched "the Shining" for the first time. I don't know why I had never seen it before. I didn't really even know much about the movie except that it had Jack Nicholson and was directed by Kubrick and based on a Stephen King novel of the same name.

Holy shit, what an intense movie. The story was amazing. The acting was amazing. The art direction was amazing. The music was amazing. I was completely blown away, and I loved every aspect of this movie. What a creepy environment, the kind of environment that can only exist in movies. I loved the scenes of the child riding around the hotel on his "bigwheel" or whatever it was he was riding. You definitely got a sense of how vast the space was. I loved the carpet and the wallpaper of the hotel as well. There are also some pretty intense scenes of Jack Nicholson wandering through the hotel or just standing completely still and staring like he is completely possessed. The two girls holding hands was also absolutely creepy and gave me chills whenever they were onscreen. I can see where this movie inspired many other horror movies that come out even today.

Does anyone have any recommendations of any other films based on these two? I think I am going to rent "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" soon, also with Jack Nicholson as I haven't seen it yet.

TOAD-IN-A-HOLE

I saw this being made in "V is for Vendetta" this weekend. I have never had eggs this way before, and now I want to try it.

TOAD-IN-A-HOLE

1 egg
1 slice bread
Butter

Spread butter on bread. Cut out a circle from the center with a biscuit cutter or glass. Place bread frame and circle, butter side down, in a greased frying pan. Break egg into the hole in the bread. Fry on low heat until the white is set. Break yolk and flip to cook egg through. Flip over circle too. Cook until browned.

Lighten up, it's just fashion

Who saw Project Runway last night?

Santino seems to be going crazier and crazier. I'm not sure what his deal is. He is obviously one of the most talented people on the show. It seems like he is bent on, if not winning, then becoming some strange personality that you will remember from his crazy antics. In last night's challenge, designing an ice skating costume for Sasha Cohen, he seemed to be thumbing his noses art the judges with his blatantly over-the-top and ridiculous design. His model even hated it, and you could see that she totally didn't want to wear it. I totally loved the concept, though of a Phoenix or of a bird of fire for an ice skater. It's a great contrast to the what you would expect, and I like Santino's attitude. I also like the looks on his face during all the judgings. I'm disappointed though with the way last night's show was edited. There was a commercial with a soundbyte of his screaming at Andrea, "I WANT YOUR SOUL!!!", but it wasn't anywhere in last night's episode. Oh my god Santino, what is up with you???

None of the rest of the people's designs wow-ed me. I can't believe Zulema won. She is always talking about how she is going to do whatever it takes to win, but week after week it's totally suck-it-tude when it comes to her designs. Even this week when she did win, it seemed to be totally by chance. Hers sucked the least or was the most wearable of the designs. Sasha didn't seem to be all that excited about it, and she seemed to be kind of bummed out that she was going to actually have to wear it to one of her competitions. Emmet's totally sucked, and I'm glad he got canned. What the fuck is he/was he doing on Project Runway, anyway? He is a menswear designer for crying out loud. The show is all about becoming the next hot fashion designer for women's fashion. Emmet always creeped me out.

I can't wait for next week. the little clip that I saw showed Santino making fun of Tim Gunn and getting totally busted by him. Dude, I love you Santino, but don't fuck with Tim Gunn. That's just not cool.

Peace out.

Project Runway

What do you guys think of Project Runway Season II? I think some of the originality of novelty has worn off since the first season, but it is still my favorite show on TV. It is exciting because some of these people are actually very talented.

Tim Gunn is awesome. That man knows his shit, and he is always dead on with his advice. I also like the way he communicated his reactions to the competitors. He reminds me of some of my professors in art school, the ones I liked...

Heidi Klum is kind of annoying to me. I am tired of hearing, "You are either in or you are out". Also, "Auf Wiedersehen".

The other judges are ok. I generally agree with them, although I think I prefer Michael Kors to Nina Garcia. I like his bedside manner better, plus he is actually a designer, so I respect his opinion more.

I think that a lot of the projects this season are kind of predictable. I think that is one of the main weaknesses of the second season. I really enjoyed the Nicki Hilton challenge, though. That has been my favorite so far.

Who do you guys think will win top three?

My picks are Nick, Santino, and Daniel V., Possibly Chloe. I really like Nick. Santino is kind of an arrogant bitch, but I like his style. I also like Daniel V.'s stuff a lot.
