i'm a failure at being stolen from.

so last night i either left my car unlocked or someone managed to get into my car without breaking a window. i sat in my car and noticed that my things that i keep in my car - mostly trash, maps, and various chargers - had been moved around. nothing had been taken that i could tell, but the person had obviously gone through my glove box, under my seats, even through my trash. and taken nothing. at first i thought the radio shack "iGo" charger that i just bought had been taken, but it was still there. my various chargers and other doodads were in different and annoying spots, and the theoretical thief had even skipped over my $350 sunglasses - the only item of any worth i keep in the front of my car.

the whole experience made me glad that i keep my trunk release locked so that it cannot be opened from the inside of the car - my cache of free books from book thing and capri-suns and random tools could have stolen, or at least rifled through! - but also a little offended that _nothing_ was taken. this person slipped into my life briefly in the night, perused my stuff - even my trash - and decided i had nothing they wanted. they left me with something, though... an empty starbucks energy drink can, and the resulting smell of sugary coffee flavored beverage permeating my car.

Do you really own a $350 pair of sunglasses?
josh [email] said at 9:15 AM 08-30-2007:
yes. they were a gift from a client though.
reggie [email] said at 9:20 AM 08-30-2007:
That's still ridiculous. Do they at least give you the ability to see if people are aliens disguised as humans? If they did, that would justify that being $350.
josh [email] said at 10:37 AM 08-30-2007:
i would not pay $350 for sunglasses, but these are very very nice. they are real glass, not plastic, so everything looks awesome, then they are HUGE so no peripheral brightness harshes your mellow, then they are coated so they are very scratch resistant. still overpriced though. but free for me!
reggie [email] said at 11:34 AM 08-30-2007:
You forgot to mention how they come with TiVo.
marcia [email] said at 2:54 PM 08-30-2007:
Are the prescription? My sunglasses cost me $250, but that's because they're prescription.

I don't understand how any pair of sunglasses, if they're not prescription, could possibly be over what a really nice pair of frames could cost in an eye store.
josh [email] said at 3:01 PM 08-30-2007:
well, the eyeglasses i'm wearing right now, the frames were $250 at lenscrafters. the new glasses i just ordered from my much better than lenscrafters optometrist, the frames were $280... in both cases thats frames only, not the lenses. also in both cases i get a $200 reimbursement from my eye plan through my health insurance, though.

I've never lost a wallet or a set of keys in my life. But I lose sunglasses practically every week. I can't even fathom that $350 sunglasses exist.
josh [email] said at 10:42 AM 08-30-2007:
i checked and they are actually $250 guys! sorry for the misinfo.
reggie [email] said at 11:36 AM 08-30-2007:
That's still like $245 dollars more than I'd pay for sunglasses. (But you didn't pay for anything so I guess it doesn't matter.)
josh [email] said at 11:47 AM 08-30-2007:
ehhh after having these sunglasses with glass i would probably pay like $50 for sunglasses if they had glass vs plastic

I'm continually considering the plunge to a 100 dollar pair
josh [email] said at 12:51 PM 08-30-2007:
glass lens sunglasses really are a world of difference! i am also considering getting a pair of prescription sunglasses made... but i would have to guard them like woah because they would be expensive!
reggie [email] said at 12:52 PM 08-30-2007:
I guess I've just never been a sunglasses kinda person, I think I look dumb in them. I think most people look dumb in them. That's not to discredit their benefits as far as keeping UV rays out of your eyeballs, I just don't think I look good in 'em.
josh [email] said at 1:04 PM 08-30-2007:
yeah i mostly wear them to avoid bright sunlight. esp. when driving.
ed [email] said at 8:36 PM 08-30-2007:
I have clip-on sunglasses that are made by the designer of my glasses. The only way you can tell that I'm not wearing "sunglasses" is if you notice the four little clasps that attach the sunglasses to my regular glasses. And again, because they were designed that way, you REALLY have to be looking for the clasps.

So if I look doofish in sunglasses, I look doofish in glasses, as well.

Not that I'm unused to looking doofish, mind you...

There a lot of great sunglasses in the $100 range. Reptiles are my current favorites

josh [email] said at 10:42 AM 08-30-2007:
i doubt they slept there since i had to leave for this class in fairfax at 6am... maybe sex. or maybe they just napped out a bit.

The trick is to gather all of your belongings into something like a cd organizer or a booksack. That way, the thief, who's bound to be nervous, can ransack your possessions in a more safe and inviting location at his or her leisure.

The more you know.

$350 dollar sunglasses better play mp3s, double as a LCD projector, detect aliens, inject low doses of morphine, and provide HUD fire-and-forget capabilities.

Also, they need to look bad ass.

But in an understated, frisson-ful way.

It's been years since I had my car broken into. It is actually one of the nicer aspects of driving a clunker.

it would take an addict *days* to rifle through your piles of car-junk! ...although i'm willing to bet you actually have nuggets of gold hidden in there somewheres...

this happened to me once. i was in seattle on new years eve and a friend who was couch surfing at my apartment in new orleans called me about 30 minutes before midnight (pacific coast time) to tell me he got back to the apartment and noticed my car dome light on.. and looked in to see that my stuff was thrown all over the car and the doors were unlocked. needless to say this was serious new years eve buzzkill. i asked him why he couldn't have waited a day to tell me. anyway, when i got back, my car was a mess, but nothing was taken. i was a little offended.
