"Take all your problems, and rip em apart, carry them off, in a shopping cart. Be like the squirrel, girl, be like the squirrel." - The White Stripes (Little Acorns)
in spin and in the album art for the new pig destroyer album, phantom limb. being published in spin means more to me than any of my publishing so far, except for my first, in an early issue of JPG. JPG mattered to me because it was (at that time) such an interesting project that was very in line with my own ideas, and also it was my first credit since "coming back" to serious photography. spin means alot simply because it was a childhood dream to be in there, as it was the cool magazine (or seemed like it) when i was 12 or 13.
josh [email] said at 8:31 AM 06-27-2007: why a sigh? its totally awesome and totally tongue in cheek, and she can rhyme really really fast, and she is about as big as my pinky and jewish, and amazingly dirty. no way she wont be huge.
kara [email] said at 9:38 AM 06-27-2007: she's no double trouble bmore but I'm sure she'll be big if you say she will.. you seem to know what the people like
josh [email] said at 1:36 PM 06-27-2007: that was your co-worker peter, not me - though lady sovereign did pretty well with her debut, i think, especially considering that 6-7 of the tracks on it were previously released singles or ep cuts. she's opening for gwen stefani on her summer tour so i think she is probably doing just fine, popularity-wise. low soundscans last time i saw the #s, but kids don't buy music anymore, in general, so that's not suprising. there is a reason why every music retail chain, distributor, and label is downsizing like crazy. The whole Atlantic group just fired another 10% of it's workforce (which is a yearly occurance there), Lumberjack and Morphius (two of the biggest indie distributors) are both probably going out of business, etc... we live in a download world now. In 5 years, i would think that any record label that hasn't mage the shift to being more of an artist management/PR company will probably be out of business, or solely surviving based on iTunes-type business/their back-catalogue. Either way, the recording industry will never again be the monolith it once was. And that's awesome.
reggie [email] said at 11:12 PM 06-27-2007: I hadn't heard about Atlantic. I know Warners just made a bunch of changes recently.
I think it's too early to say the recording industry will never be the monolith it once was. Capitalism is capitalism and (unfortunately) the industry will probably find a different way to rule the music world.
We're too much of a consumer society for it NOT to.
josh [email] said at 2:22 AM 06-28-2007: the problem is that the recording industry existed because once it was hard to provide and distribute a good recording. now it's basically easier to do that than provide drinking water or even toilet paper.
reggie [email] said at 10:12 AM 06-27-2007: On paper it's not that impressive. But sometimes you need to hear rap lyrics for them to really have an effect.
reggie [email] said at 10:24 AM 06-27-2007: A snippet from "No Time" by Lil Kim:
Now watch mama, go up and down dick to jaw crazy
Uhh! Say my name baby (okay)
Before you nut, I'ma dribble down your butt cheeks
Make you wiggle, then giggle just a little
I'm drinkin babies, then I cracks for the Mercedes
Act shady, and feel my three-eighty *gun cocks*
or the raven, oohwee I see
Your girl ain't a "Freak Like Me", or Adina
Huh, can't fade the rhinoceros of rap (say what?)
Lil' Kim pussy (uhh) how preposterous is that? (ha hah!)
brianbibbly [email] said at 8:31 AM 06-27-2007: That is amazing Josh. I am very proud of you! Spin used to rock my socks too back in the younger years. Quite an achievement!
abby [email] said at 1:58 PM 06-27-2007: england, shes been a superstar in england for like a few years. she gets press here for appearing wasted on tv.
reggie [email] said at 10:55 PM 06-27-2007: WTMD was pumping "Rehab" long before mainstream radio here in B-more. She actually has another album that came out a couple of years ago. I ain't heard that one, don't really want to.
I still can't determine if I think she's hot or not. She seems to have a really large face...or is that because of her mega-hair?
abby [email] said at 10:09 AM 06-28-2007: its because she weighs like 90 lbs due to her well-publicized eating disorder. i dont listen to the radio and i didnt know she was on it.
reggie [email] said at 12:05 PM 06-28-2007: Yeah I heard her the other night when I was in Philly. The version of "Rehab" I heard then had a verse by what sounded like Jay-Z in it.
It's only a matter of time before Akon finds his way onto a track.
josh [email] said at 12:06 PM 06-28-2007: i was weirded out when i heard that same version because i honestly thought it was an oldie i had just somehow never heard before until jay-z started up
amanda [email] said at 11:31 AM 06-27-2007: Congratulations, Josh! I remember reading Spin back in the day and really loving the photography and art, so that's fantastic that you've been published there.
myriam [email] said at 8:36 AM 06-28-2007: dude that's awesome!!! congrats!!! i too dream of having my stuff in a magazine some day, i can only imagine how that will feel but i bet it feels pretty damn good. good for you and all your hard work!
