neeed sleeep.....

pardon the poor grammar and formatting. this is slightly tweaked from a jabber conversation:

so, a rendition of "my night". first i drove to pg plaza and a bunch of nerds started making fun of me "for thinking i'd honestly get a PS3 getting in line at 10:30 the night before" - ("we'll, I'm 5th in line and i've been here 38 hours").

then i drove to greenbelt and chilled there for like a half hour, then, looking at my blackberry, i realized i might have about a 20% chance of getting one so i headed up to arundel mills.

at arundel mills there is a best buy, circuit city, wal mart, & FYE.

so walmart had a short line, and announced they only had 4 consoles, so that was a wash.
all of the others were on "mall" property
so then i go over to best buy, and there's no line but the security guard announces "no one's allowed on mall property till 6:00 am". so i apologize, and drive around a bit.
best buy is supposed to have (min) 26 at each store
20 60GB models, 6 20GB models
they may have more but that was their "minimums"
so at that point i drive over to circuit city and they have a sign in the window (on the inside) stating that they only have 8 (scratched out) with 5 written over it and mall security says you can't line up till 6:00 am.

so
at this point it's 1:00 am and i drive over to walmart and sleep in the parking lot
periodically, i wake up and do the loop. all's the same except at 2:30 there is a sign on the outside of circuit city
"DUE TO A SHIPPING ERROR, WE WILL NOT HAVE THE UNITS"
but since that was on the outside i disregarded it as disinformation and go back to my post and go to sleep
at 4:45 i wake up and do the lap... only now there is 600 people outside of best buy
with 2 security guards trying to keep them under control and it's not working
so the county boys are brought in...
and then the state...
and then at 5:45 they announce that because the mob is so unruly they are refusing to sell the units

i immediately take the hint and haul ass over to circuit city. at that point
there is a mob of about 30 people crowded around the front door of CC, i say to myself "thats not very productive" and stand off to one side leaning against the wall
then about 20 more people show up and the mob gets worse and at 6:00 am they start demanding that CC open the store
and try and force the doors open i again say "what the fuck" and stand back a bit further and then they announce "form a line"
to which a line starts to form and i'm like 10 back (standing in the same spot i was in) save for a mob of 20 people who refuse to move from the door.

this continues with the security guards yelling at people, the line growing, etc etc
at this point i assume they're going to do a lottery unlike the land rush method they sometimes do
because land rush is what causes people to get trampled, anyways, i digress.

i'm standing in line, it's like 6:15 the mob still isn't listening to any of the security

the head of security is fed up freaks out
and points and me and yells "YOU CALM DOWN AND GET TO THE END OF THE LINE, RIGHT NOW!!!!!"
to which people start laughing at me. she does this to a couple of other people, then drags us back there to make sure we go.
at this point, i'm confused, because i've been dead silent the whole time avoiding the mob. when we get to the back she whispers "i'd suggest the 5 of you get around to the back of the store asap" we're escorted to the back. then we're let in through the stereo install area and then held in the store for an hour
because......
at this point people have started threatening violence on us
and multiple people were arrested for brandishing weapons
so we're held in the store until 7:30
and we have to give our keys to employees
who (in street clothes) drive our cars around back
so we can discreetly exit with electronics in tow

The Payoff

that's insane. people in NYC have been in line since monday and that's at stores that have 400 units. my friend got in line at 2am at the sony store and had one in hand by 9am. he, of course, is also planning on selling it as opposed to playing it. i wonder how many people are actually keeping them to play.

are there really stores with 400 units? that seems impossible from what ive heard about how limited this release is

it was like a refugee camp last night at union square. people huddled under tarps, behind barricades, waiting for this thing, police going crazy. i was wondering what was going on.

Crazy shit. These people in line can get nuts! I'll post my experience from the other side shortly... I worked at the launch event in SF. Luckily they crowd wasn't unruly one bit, AFAIK.
myriam [email] said at 3:44 PM 11-17-2006:
ha! are you not allowing bidding on it?
woody [email] said at 4:17 PM 11-17-2006:
Why are people asking these prices when auctions are closing under $2500? I don't get it.
brad [email] said at 5:53 PM 11-17-2006:
Yeah, I don't know what that package retails for, but asking $8,000, regardless of how disposable the buyer's income, seems insanely optimistic. You can buy a very nice used car for that much.
josh [email] said at 6:00 PM 11-17-2006:
the kind of person brian is hoping for doesn't want a used car.

brian and people like him are basically banking on Sony not being able to get more units to the US by Xmas.

This isn't a long shot since they pshed the launch back by 6 months, cut the allotment in half, in half again, then didn't meet that amount, then recalled a big chunk of the initial allotment before it even went on sale.

Assumming Brian is right and there aren't a significant # of PS3s here before Xmas, some rich asshole very well might spend $6-8K to make sure his kid (or himself) has a PS3.
brad [email] said at 10:18 PM 11-17-2006:
Well yeah, I'm sure whoever would buy it would be some rich asshole - I was just suggesting a used car as something representative of what $8,000 is *really* worth. I didn't know they were in such short supply. That story's crazy. People fight for toys around xmas time like their fighting for their lives. Ridiculous.
josh [email] said at 5:58 PM 11-17-2006:
auctions have also closed for $4500.

This from the Boston Globe:

A Boston police sergeant uses a bullhorn this morning to tell a young man hiding behind a newspaper paper that it was time leave a lobby adjoining the Copley Place Mall after video game buffs overwhelmed security:

Hahahahaaaa

Also - A 21-year-old Massachusetts man was shot early this morning while waiting in line to buy the video game system outside a Wal-Mart in Putnam, Conn. Investigators are searching for two armed teenagers who witnesses said were trying to rob the gamers waiting in line.

In Palmdale, Calif., authorities shut down a Super Wal-Mart after some shoppers got rowdy late Wednesday. In West Bend, Wis., a 19-year-old man was injured when he ran into a pole racing with 50 others for one of 10 spots outside a Wal-Mart.

Hey Brian,

DO NOT accept paypal. ALL PS3 auctions have been flagged for fraud review, by both paypal and ebay. Two bad things can happen. First is buyer fraud. The buyer can file a complaint with paypal and say you sent them a brick in the box and paypal will freeze your funds in paypal until they perform their "investigation" and then ultimately they will give the money back to the buyer REGARDLESS OF ANY PROOF YOU HAVE to the contrary. Or, if the buyer used a credit card they can just do a chargeback, which paypal will then pass onto you by either taking it out of the frozen funds, or if somehow you actually got the money out of paypal into your bank account, they will just withdraw it back out, or just immediately put your account to a collection agency.

Unfortunately, there is no real alternative to paypal except www.bidpay.com, and they won't do anything over $1500.

Also Brian, I would dump the PS3 as soon as you can for around $2,000 to $2,500. You don't want to hold on too long as their is a second shipment coming soon.

Despite the launch hype, the PS3 has been very poorly received, at least where I live. Even the hardcore Sony fans that I know agree that there is no game worth $600 on the PS3. I stood at the PS3 kiosk at one of the Mega Best Buy's in town and every single person was let down by the graphics and the gameplay. The casual non-gamer passerbys were enamored by the hoopla until they saw the price and then gave either a stunned stare or cursed outloud at how crazy it is that a game system costs $600.

What sucks is that the PS3 is getting all this hype for nothing. People are not standing in line, fighting to the death because they want the system; they simply want to make mega bucks on ebay. When I was in the 360 launch line, over half of the people in the line were buying to sell on ebay.

I seriously doubt Sony will be number one this time around. They have no killer app, and no arcade games anymore to launch the system (i.e. Tekken 9) and the system costs at least $600. It's actually a tough call between Nintendo and Microsoft this time around. The 360 is getting a lot of publisher support and Sony is getting almost no "exclusive" games outside of their own development teams. Also HALO 3 is going to be fucking huge and if properly timed, cream Sony before it can even get to second gen. games.

Lastly, I think Sony made two big errors; they pist of the Japanese, their homebase by allocating a pittance of systems and they pist of the Europeans by simply cutting the shipments to zero.
