HL Mencken

Ok, so I keep reading quotes that intrigue me or make me snicker and then they turn out to be from HL Mencken. I'm in a reading lull and eager for some snarky satire. If I want to try Mencken out, what would be a good place to start?

Also, I saw some book of his in the used bookstore by my house called "In Defense of Women." Is that any good? Anyone read it?

Baltimore, the HL Mencken House is here.

"In Defense of Women" is obviously a work of fiction as there is no real-world defense of women.

I keep a copy of The Portable Curmudgeon next to my toilet, and it is littered with Mencken quotes. I love that book.

There's a lot of stuff to be found on the web.
Read his coverage of the Scopes evolution trial.
Also his satirical history of bathing, and "Mother's Day"
There's a book called the something HL Mencken, like indespensible or impossible... i forget but the intro is by Gore Vidal, it's a good one.

Oh, so much Mencken. I read a great bio of him a while back. But there should also be collections of his Sun columns around, too.

"Treatise on the Gods" and "Prejudices" are wonderful books, the latter being a collection of essays from his peak of influence/popularity.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. I will definitely check out the scopes trial coverage, and see if I can find the one w/ gore vidal intro. I might check out this "in defense of women" thing too just because it sounds like it'll make me laugh.

I have a collection of his essays called "The Vintage Mancken." It covers writings from his entire life, put out by Vintage Books.

Yeah, this is a good one. There's a robust Mencken bio that came out in the last couple years that's pretty good. Probably in paperback by now.

I went back to the used bookstore for the "in defense of women" copy and it was already gone only two days later. i was a bit bummed. I'll keep my eyes open.
