Everyone, please tune in tonight for the nationally televised rebirth of the Superdome on ESPN Monday Night Football. I know, I know, it is only a football game, but it symbolizes so much more for us down here.
Look for me. I'll be wearing my Mike McKenzie No. 34 jersey and a blue FEMA tarp cape with WHO DAT stenciled on the back! Woot!

I was reading about Brett Favre today on the train and it occurred to me that another really nice thing about football is that steroid use would be meaningless in it--you can't get some jackass who pumps himself up and throws off the whole game, like in baseball. I saw that crazy run of Favre's in replays last night, and it's amazing what it takes to do something like that--catch the ball, dodge a bunch of enormous guys lunging at you, run and run and run with shitloads of padded weight bearing you down and when you're already tired from a game... impressive! I appreciate stuff like that. I'm gonna be watching tonight. Actually I'm hoping they show the roof and stuff and how they fixed it, I'm curious architecturally.
I'm speechless here. Myr, I appreciate your intellectual interest here, but the proper response, in true Zack-loving football fan fashion, is :

P.S. Don't expect some architectual wonder like the Arizona Cardinal's new stadium (which I highly recommend you look at if you haven't already). The Dome is a dump. It ain't gonna be THAT new. But it will be like another planet for us fans who have been long suffering (metaphorically) under its roof for the last 30 years.

honestly, i have no idea how people can watch a football game in that building ever again. to say nothing of the convention center - how do you hold your dentists' convention or whatever in a place with so many traumatic visual associations?

The Superdome was repaired with insurance money, not FEMA money. The Superdome was insured for about $475 million. Having the Superdome back gives hope to everyone in the area. Having the Superdome in the center of the city falling to pieces while the ninth ward, arguably the worst part of the city, being rebuilt is a stupid idea.

But I did lose most of my voice at the game and got my ass handed to me this morning in court this morning on a plaintiff's Motion for Summary Judgment. My client is not going to be happy. So much for the afterglow!

Gretna is on the Westbank, across the river from Downtown New Orleans and within striking distance of the French Quarter (ferry ride, car ride over Mississippi Bridge). It is an unremarkable area, but close to the good stuff.
