Everyone, please tune in tonight for the nationally televised rebirth of the Superdome on ESPN Monday Night Football. I know, I know, it is only a football game, but it symbolizes so much more for us down here.
Look for me. I'll be wearing my Mike McKenzie No. 34 jersey and a blue FEMA tarp cape with WHO DAT stenciled on the back! Woot!
myriam [email] said at 3:04 PM 09-25-2006: I'm actually psyched about this. Being with John has taught me more about football, and I'm coming to enjoy it. I was reading about Brett Favre today on the train and it occurred to me that another really nice thing about football is that steroid use would be meaningless in it--you can't get some jackass who pumps himself up and throws off the whole game, like in baseball. I saw that crazy run of Favre's in replays last night, and it's amazing what it takes to do something like that--catch the ball, dodge a bunch of enormous guys lunging at you, run and run and run with shitloads of padded weight bearing you down and when you're already tired from a game... impressive! I appreciate stuff like that. I'm gonna be watching tonight. Actually I'm hoping they show the roof and stuff and how they fixed it, I'm curious architecturally.
I'm speechless here. Myr, I appreciate your intellectual interest here, but the proper response, in true Zack-loving football fan fashion, is :
GRRREEAAAAGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! FOOOOOOOOOOTBAAAAAALL!!!!!!!!!!! *grins wildly between enormous bites of hot dog and gulps of beer.*
P.S. Don't expect some architectual wonder like the Arizona Cardinal's new stadium (which I highly recommend you look at if you haven't already). The Dome is a dump. It ain't gonna be THAT new. But it will be like another planet for us fans who have been long suffering (metaphorically) under its roof for the last 30 years.
myriam [email] said at 3:18 PM 09-25-2006: ha ha ha ha ha!
RARRWRGHHHH!!! FOOOOOTBALLLL!!!
i'ma get my highlifes and watch it on the couch in my underwear!!!!
p.s. i get to fly from nola to br in a little cessna and i will try to see the dome from above!!! i can't WAIT to tailgate and go to the kentucky game in a couple weeks!!! i promise i will drown my brain in beer!
brianbibbly [email] said at 3:23 PM 09-25-2006: Miller High Life and you in your underwear, now THAT is the show I really want to see tonight! (Sorry John)
josh [email] said at 3:01 AM 09-26-2006: I think it could enhance performance in all of them. I mean, if it helps cyclists, it can help a quarterback...
katie [email] said at 3:07 PM 09-25-2006: the superdome - corpse free for 370 days
honestly, i have no idea how people can watch a football game in that building ever again. to say nothing of the convention center - how do you hold your dentists' convention or whatever in a place with so many traumatic visual associations?
i hope it goes well. the sadness needs to start to pass somehow. go saints.
rick [email] said at 4:09 PM 09-25-2006: I don't hear Germans complaining about the soccer matches and track meets held in the stadiums the Nazis built.
ed [email] said at 7:26 PM 09-25-2006: I hope yer on early, because even though NO's kicker is the kicker on my fantasy team, I am already assured of a win. Welcome to 3-0, population ME ( - and ONLY me! - in my league)!
cricket [email] said at 12:12 AM 09-26-2006: joyful joyful we adore thee, god of glory lord of light! what a fullfilling victory! yay new orleans, we were rooting for you!
neilbert said at 3:20 AM 09-26-2006: Wil Wheaton asked on Fark why was FEMA money spent on rebuilding the Superdome instead of rebuilding the ninth ward first. The Superdome was repaired with insurance money, not FEMA money. The Superdome was insured for about $475 million. Having the Superdome back gives hope to everyone in the area. Having the Superdome in the center of the city falling to pieces while the ninth ward, arguably the worst part of the city, being rebuilt is a stupid idea.
dave [email] said at 10:24 AM 09-26-2006: not to mention things that generate revenue and add to the tax base of the city generally help it's longevity.
brianbibbly [email] said at 5:01 PM 09-26-2006: PS, the game was absolutely amazing in person. It was really one of the most incredible times I have ever had at any sporting event, ever.
But I did lose most of my voice at the game and got my ass handed to me this morning in court this morning on a plaintiff's Motion for Summary Judgment. My client is not going to be happy. So much for the afterglow!
brianbibbly [email] said at 5:22 PM 09-26-2006: You will contact me!
Gretna is on the Westbank, across the river from Downtown New Orleans and within striking distance of the French Quarter (ferry ride, car ride over Mississippi Bridge). It is an unremarkable area, but close to the good stuff.
art [email] said at 5:26 PM 09-26-2006: I'd be glad to.
I fly in nite of Oct 17th and leave morning of the 20th. I will be staying on St. Charles Ave. There don't seem to be any places to stay in Gretna except the scary type
