i wonder how high up in the white house knowledge of this comic will be? i mean it's in the DC citypaper, so obviously someone will see it.
kiche [email] said at 10:58 AM 09-20-2006:
does ahmejaid have a hole in the bottom of his bucket of popcorn?
Bendependent [email] said at 11:04 AM 09-20-2006:
of course! i tried to convey that in the eyes and hands, but it didn't work as well as i would have liked without straying too far from that drawing style...

bug eyes would have made it easier to convey, but they didn't look as good
craig [email] said at 11:27 AM 09-20-2006:
I thought it was obvious with the way he was leaning back. I like the way that it is just implied.
kiche [email] said at 12:06 PM 09-20-2006:
      so do i.

it's classy, you have to be "in" to get it.
woody [email] said at 12:24 PM 09-20-2006:
Or you could have seen Diner. I think it's fairly obvious, and I am far from "in". Or classy.
kiche [email] said at 12:27 PM 09-20-2006:
you don't think the move is classy?
Bendependent [email] said at 12:39 PM 09-20-2006:
            i'm glad it works...
woody [email] said at 2:41 PM 09-20-2006:
That's not for me to say. I'm just saying, I ain't classy. And I'm not going to confirm or deny whether I have used the move or not. But the artistic decision is classy. Well, classier than drawing it from the floor's persective...
josh [email] said at 12:58 PM 09-20-2006:
i would say the # of people who are reading this comic & have seen diner is probably smaller than the # of people who are "in".
kiche [email] said at 1:47 PM 09-20-2006:
            i haven't seen diner.

"in" just meant, people who could figure it out.
woody [email] said at 2:51 PM 09-20-2006:
Wait, smaller than the people who are reading the comic AND are in, or just in? Cuz I think more people have seen Diner than are "in" but I consider the "in" crowd to be pretty elite. I would think in the general population, only about 1-2% of the folks are "in" at any given time. But then there's stuff that's so "in" most of the "in" crowd don't even get it. So who knows.

            To summarize:

If you got this within 2 seconds: 80% chance you saw Diner (you like to think you're in), 15% this is an obvious ploy to you (you're in), 5% you came up with this all on your own and have tried it on a date (you are Kiche).
josh [email] said at 2:58 PM 09-20-2006:
i doubt that many people who are reading this comic in the citypaper (or online, for that matter) have seen diner. i doubt that most people under 35 or so have seen diner. i would assume most people that read ben's comic are likely under 30, much less 35. thus, my comment.
kiche [email] said at 3:17 PM 09-20-2006:
what the fuck is diner, woody?

              i'm taking it, it's a movie.

i got that comic panel immediately. i have no idea what you are talking about. craig got it too. he didn't mention of this "diner" thing. in fact, no one on here other than you and josh have mentioned it.

as i said, i used "in" just to mean people who could look at this and put two and two together.
woody [email] said at 3:24 PM 09-20-2006:
So relax, you and Craig are both "in".
josh [email] said at 3:28 PM 09-20-2006:
ive never seen it but its the movie where a bunch of actors got their start... kevin bacon, mickey rourke... it's barry levinson's first movie. i have always meant to rent it, but haen't thus far.
kiche [email] said at 3:29 PM 09-20-2006:
i just looked it up. it looks interesting.

i was simply making a point that this joke exists without a movie i'd never even heard of until woody mentioned it.
woody [email] said at 3:34 PM 09-20-2006:
Now I have to know if Ben has seen it, or heard of the scene. Cuz if he hasn't, my hat's off to him moreso.
myriam [email] said at 4:01 PM 09-20-2006:
you should--it's all about baltimore, you'll probable get a kick out of it.

he did a whole series of movies on baltimore.

they're not the most thrilling things in the world, but i like barry l.
joe [email] said at 4:34 PM 09-20-2006:
I got this. How could you not!? It's such a classic move.

          What the fuck is Diner?
christian [email] said at 1:04 PM 09-20-2006:
also you can see bush's boner so the implication is pretty hard to miss
woody [email] said at 2:42 PM 09-20-2006:
I totally missed that. Good eye!
Bendependent [email] said at 9:43 AM 09-21-2006:
i have seen diner. i liked that movie. it seems to be a movie that guys like better than girls.

I only slightly remember the popcord scene in it. I've seen the penis popcorn trick a bunch of different places over the years tho. It is a classic.
joe [email] said at 11:23 AM 09-20-2006:
oh god, oh god, oh god.

so good.

also, I threw away my spinach today just before I saw this.
Bendependent [email] said at 12:39 PM 09-20-2006:
we still have some spinach. i'm reluctant to throw it away cos that shit's expensive
joe [email] said at 1:07 PM 09-20-2006:
don't eat it! you'll shoot your eye out!
kara [email] said at 2:43 PM 09-20-2006:
      just cook it
woody [email] said at 2:55 PM 09-20-2006:
Some Austinites are visiting and I ordered pizzas for lunch, one of which had spinach. So they got all concerned. Good grief, it was grown in Canada, it's been cooked at 425F for 20 minutes, I think it's DEAD, and it's still 20 times more dangerous to drive to the office each day!!! God, I hate Fox News.
craig [email] said at 11:30 AM 09-20-2006:
This one is great.

They more detailed the drawing, the more disturbing they look without noses.
kara [email] said at 11:40 AM 09-20-2006:
turned out great
rick [email] said at 2:17 PM 09-20-2006:
nice
josh [email] said at 2:30 PM 09-20-2006:
speaking of diplomacy, we should play that soon
josh [email] said at 3:30 PM 09-20-2006:
this is really what we should be talking about... diplomacy the board game guys, not diner the movie.
josh [email] said at 5:17 PM 09-20-2006:
cmon guys someone has to be a nerd reading this
woody [email] said at 5:57 PM 09-20-2006:
I used to play this when it had wooden blocks for armies and different wooden blocks for ships. I hated it. Being the middle child my 2 brothers formed natural alliances. In Diplomacy, tv show voting, what goes on the pizza, or whatever. We would play this game, they would immediately join forces and then quit the game when I was out. Plus I am not good at Survivor-style strategy because I just don't understand it well enough. It is too nuanced. I wouldn't mind trying this game again though. Just not with my brothers.
josh [email] said at 11:09 PM 09-20-2006:
you also cant play the game with less than 5 people... were you guys playing with just the 3 of you?
woody [email] said at 12:56 AM 09-21-2006:
Yeah I know, but my Dad had a vasectomy after 3 kids. Selfish bastard. We played a few good games with 5+ when we had relatives visiting, but it's such a long game most of my friends got bored with it. They were getting into D&D I think.
rick [email] said at 9:10 AM 09-21-2006:
        I always liked Risk better.

This will not play well in the Muslim world! I see almost all guys in the streets burning more flags, if this is viewed in Arab land. You may get burned in effigy like that Danish guy.
