So I got really drunk last night, and when I asked to pay for my tab, I was met with a wall of attitude: "You already paid; get the fuck outta here," or something to that effect. I really didn't remember paying, and I assumed I also forgot to tip, hence the attitude. But why couldn't this guy be reasonable? If I forgot I paid him already, is it so unlikely that I would have FORGOTTEN to tip him too? All he had to say is, "Actually, you already paid us, and I noticed you didn't tip. Was there something wrong with the service?" And I would have said, "Oh, I'm very sorry. Here, let me tip you." I'm so sick of bartenders who think they have card blanc to treat you like shit simply because it's the weekend, and they don't want to be there. Look asshole, you chose this for yourself. I'm not responsible for your condition. Anyway, I said, "Can I at least get a receipt?" And after much shouting, and initially being ignored for this request, I got it. I just stuffed it in my pocket without looking - too drunk to care, I guess - I couldn't even find it when I looked for it this morning. But when I went online to check my bank statement, I saw a charge for $26.40. I only had 2 Delirium Tremens, and granted, that's expensive beer, but even if they cost me $10 each, I don't feel like that gives a bartender the right to reward himself with a 30% + tip.
Also, I know that there are at least 2 bartenders who read Killoggs, and you've always been great to me, thanks. And if at any time I didn't tip you, I didn't mean it, and please don't ever hesitate to point it out to me if I did.
anthony [email] said at 7:30 PM 09-10-2006: sorry dude. I would call the establishment to refute the charges, or call your credit card company to refute them as well. Asshole bartenders suck. I think from here on out, I'll make it a point to stiff any bartender who gives me some attitude--not that I patronize bars that often.
jake [email] said at 4:14 PM 09-12-2006: Okay, for drinks, maybe.
But the whole point of spending money in a strip club is to rub that filthy lucre til it's warm, and then rub that warm lucre against a stripper until it's filthy...
myriam [email] said at 8:35 PM 09-10-2006: I don't really get what happened. You didn't pay but then he filled out your bill for you? Is that possible?
brad [email] said at 11:35 PM 09-10-2006: My card was definitely run, I was just so incredibly drunk that I didn't remember it. And honestly, being so drunk, I might have unwittingly overtipped him myself. I just assumed I was getting attitude because I forgot to tip, but maybe he was just annoyed that I couldn't remember paying. But I must have signed the check, or else I wouldn't have gotten my card back, unless I just put my card in my wallet and absent-mindedly walked away from the check.
marcia [email] said at 9:55 PM 09-10-2006: not sure if you want to put this on killoggs, but where was this? i would like to know to avoid that place. and that bartender.
dispute the charges. if it's a credit card they'll take it right off, especially if it's such a small amount.
marcia [email] said at 1:42 PM 09-11-2006: i had trouble with one of the guys who worked there. i was on a date (it was probably last february or something) and the bartender would totally ignore me and only take orders from the guy i was with. When i told him at the end of the night i had enough the guy i was with started trying to get me another drink. I told the bartender no, i didn't want one, i was through. and he gave me another drink anyway and winked at my date. i never went out with that guy again and whenever i saw that baretender i refused to be served by him.
kiche [email] said at 1:33 PM 09-12-2006: i live in nyc?
booze is real expensive here, especially in bars. i'm pretty sure that a bottle of chimay costs the same out of a store in nyc as it did in a bar in baton rouge.
i'm pretty sure dc is less expensive than nyc alcohol wise.
myriam [email] said at 1:50 PM 09-12-2006: beer and wine is typ. $6 here unless you find that one random dive bar which will have crappy beer for $4.50 or so. i thought it was like that in all the big east and west coast cities
christian [email] said at 3:45 PM 09-12-2006: there are bars with $3 beers everywhere in nyc. dc and nyc alcohol prices in bars are comparable. 6-packs are more in nyc
marcia [email] said at 2:26 PM 09-12-2006: i don't underdtand why people think NYC is so expensive--i think it's actually more affordable than DC in a lot of ways. food, alcohol, and places to stay are insanely expensive here. and considering the crime rate, it makes it barely worth it.
marcia [email] said at 5:48 PM 09-12-2006: yeah, but you live in the ugliest muthafuckin' place in the united states. AND y'all hate gays and blacks and walking. bucket o' beer for $6 or not, houston sucks!
marcia [email] said at 5:53 PM 09-12-2006: though, admittedly, you can afford adorably small home there that are perfect for the single person. that i do envy a great deal. and the porn shop next to the a super expensive shopping mall. ah, the wonders of not having zoning laws...
dave [email] said at 12:17 PM 09-13-2006: we hate blacks? I think you are confusing Texas with the South. Houston is actually pretty diverse and tolerant.
rick [email] said at 1:00 PM 09-13-2006: Texas is most certainly part of the South although you could make the argument that parts of Texas are really parts of the West (the same way parts of Missouri are parts of the South).
dave [email] said at 1:54 PM 09-13-2006: To respond to both you and Kiche. I know that as far as succession from the Union Texas was in the Confederacy. My intent is more that in the "New South" I wouldn't consider Texas or even East Texas to be a member. The prevailing mindsets and cultural attitudes separate it enough from the likes of "Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama"
I'm sure it's a debatable point, much like the D.C. vs Balti discussion we had awhile back.
josh [email] said at 12:07 AM 09-13-2006: there are a lot of places you can afford to live that are nicer than houston. though houston is, i'm sure, far from the worst place to live in texas
josh [email] said at 12:09 AM 09-13-2006: yeah you can eat and do fun stuff for pretty cheap in NYC... though movies are $$$. they are expensive everywhere now, though, i guess.
reggie [email] said at 12:27 AM 09-13-2006: They're expensive everywhere but most places (outside of NY) offer both matinee prices as well as discounts to students.
I suppose LIVING in NYC is inexpensive if you don't actuall LIVE there. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could afford a place to stay without having to live with other people or at least with too many other people.
josh [email] said at 1:56 PM 09-12-2006: why are you comparing how much something costs at a store compared to what it costs at a bar? bars are more expensive than stores.
kiche [email] said at 7:56 PM 09-12-2006: why don't you pester me here.
i make the comparison of the price of a beer in a store in nyc to a bar in the b.r. and note that a bottle of the same price in the b.r. bar as in an nyc store.
the above question i posed was not a comparison in the same right. it was more a question and a comparison, as in, did you buy two bottles of delerium tremens and come up with a bill that totalled $26. if so, then i would have come to the conclusion that beer is much cheaper in d.c. than in nyc. i know i've drank beer in d.c. and remember it being cheaper than nyc, but much more expensive than b.r.
a bottle of delerium tremens at the chimes would probably run about $13. i couldn't see it having a comparible price in dc; but wanted to make sure.
i thought i was being clear, but perhaps i wasn't.
kiche [email] said at 11:35 PM 09-12-2006: because if he was paying $13 or under at a bar for a bottle of a beer that i buy for a comparable price at a store; well, that is something i would want to make a mental note of. why are you having such a difficult time understanding this?
josh [email] said at 12:11 AM 09-13-2006: it just seems like a goofy thing to take note of. a bottle of champagne that costs $25 at a store might cost $100 at a bar. there's not much of value in knowing that...
kiche [email] said at 10:02 AM 09-13-2006: there's no value in knowing that a bottle of champagne that costs $25 in a store also costs $25 at a particular bar?
kiche [email] said at 10:10 AM 09-13-2006: i honestly can't fathom how you can't understand that i would find it noteworthy that bars in dc price drinks at the same amount as they price them in nyc stores (if that had been the case).
do you never compare prices of things between cities?
do you find it noteworthy that nyc has more expensive rent than baltimore?
do you find it noteworthy that nyc has cheaper food than dc?
craig [email] said at 1:15 PM 09-13-2006: I didn't find beer in stores in nyc to be that much more expensive than normal. It is usually just beer in bars and restaraunts that is very expensive. You have to pay for the luxury of hanging out with a bunch of pretentious fucks who won't give you the time of day. And there is no way you can make any comparisons of any kind from Brad's story because he was drunk and obviously has no idea what the hell went on at the bar that night.
rick [email] said at 11:00 AM 09-13-2006: A wine dealer told me she refuses to buy wine in restaurants because many of the brands they offer, she recognizes as brands she buys for $3-$4.
dave [email] said at 1:43 PM 09-13-2006: That's retarded. Most of the food in resaurants can be made at home for a fraction of the cost as well. There's something to be said about paying for service and ambiance.
Oona said at 3:07 PM 09-12-2006: Be aware they sometimes do this: They will run the charge through for more than the actual amount (before you sign) because they claim they don't know what you are going to tip. Check your account when you get home and you might see it charged for $20-50 over the bill. This charge will be dropped off the account in a day or two when the actual charge goes through the system. This doesn't always happen at every establishment, but it has happened to me alot, and it sure is unnerving.
