specifically via alcohol. When is it 'okay' and for how long?

When something stops producing a beneficial effect, it stops being medicinal.

when you end up taking some guy home from the bar just because he was there?
brianbibbly [email] said at 9:23 AM 08-22-2006:
If you are sober enough to ask, you are doing it wrong.
milky [email] said at 9:42 AM 08-22-2006:
It's not. Not in any form or duration.
rick [email] said at 10:18 AM 08-22-2006:
I have read that the recommended amount of daily alcohol is two bottles of beer or two glasses of wine or two shots of spirits or two sips of anti-freeze.
josh [email] said at 11:10 AM 08-22-2006:
i would say it's okay until you manage to get out of the same apartment as your ex

If a friend drowns their sorrows for more than a month, then I worry.
shauna [email] said at 12:28 PM 08-22-2006:
if you find yourself hiding it or lying about it, then you know you aren't comfortable with what you are doing. and putting yourself in danger is never a good sign, either.
meredith [email] said at 7:39 PM 08-22-2006:
Nope, not lying about it or hiding it. And I'm actually not drinking a lot. Just daily, which is something I haven't really done since last year when the hurricane hit.
jeff [email] said at 4:51 PM 08-22-2006:
Why pour money down the drain on alcohol? Go on a clothes and coffee spending spree then hit a day spa and chill.
julie [email] said at 6:32 PM 08-22-2006:
Alcohol is definitely the most socially acceptable form of self-medicating. Therefore it's also the most played-out and unoriginal. It can feel good and dramatic to announce, "I need a drink!" when things are bad, and everyone does it sometimes. But alcohol isn't helping anything here. Shopping, however!
kate [email] said at 7:34 PM 08-22-2006:
I find this strange coming from someone who is leaving a guy because of his drinking problem.
kate [email] said at 7:36 PM 08-22-2006:
Who ever felt better from drinking. I always feel like complete shit after trying to drink away my problems. When I break up with a guy I throw away the lingerie I wore in front of him and I buy an awesome new dress. I am weird about the lingerie. I obviously never build up a worthy collection.

    Jeff is right dude.
meredith [email] said at 7:42 PM 08-22-2006:
I feel better from drinking. I feel nice and buzzy. It's also the only thing that gets rid of my cramps!

I have to reiterate that I'm not talking about drinking myself into oblivion here. I am haven't been drunk in a very long time.

Also, I don't own lingere. I don't really hold with throwing clothes and stuff away just because of a guy either.
kate [email] said at 8:28 PM 08-22-2006:
it's also okay to be sad. i mean, there is no way to avoid that weird feeling of loss you have. so whatever. i would say get a cat, but um, you have two. if you are going to stay in that apartment, or wherever you live, have you ever seen those like freaking awesome kind of apartments that cats can climb up all the way to the ceiling. that would be kind of fun to put in your house. just be like, fuck you jeremy, i love my cats, beatch.
meredith [email] said at 7:37 PM 08-22-2006:
Ha! I'm not leaving him because of his drinking problem! If only it were that cut and dry.
kate [email] said at 7:44 PM 08-22-2006:
      I know dude.
milky [email] said at 8:10 PM 08-22-2006:
Mere, I'd rather see you not pick up a habit that you clearly don't like in other people. I care. "Self-medicating," and when you have to use that term...well, I promise you it's no fun when you're down to using that term.
meredith [email] said at 10:40 PM 08-22-2006:
Okay, Milk, please don't worry. I guess I learned my lesson about posting one-sentance posts with no explanation. This post was kind of tongue and cheek. I know what's going on with me and I am aware that I've started drinking more. I am also aware that it's due to stress and it will slack off once things get less stressful. Because I am aware of it, I'm sure that if it doesn't slack off, I'll notice. Seriously, I'm not sitting down at night drinking a bottle of wine by myself. But I'm glad everyone cares enough to be concerned I guess.

I'm just sayin' guys, don't stage the intervention just yet.

          *Tongue IN cheek

Tongue *and* cheek was so much sexxier!

            Be kind to yourself, Mere.

I can assure you, *over*-self-medicating is BAD. But I see by your comments here that this is of little concern, and that makes me happy.

As someone who did it (to excess) for WAY too long, I'm glad to see you not following in my footsteps.

You totally have "more to live for" (and no, this is NOT a referendum, people) at this point than I do, so I'd love nothing more than to see you avoid the mistakes I have made.

Be you! And by being you, be happy! And by being you being happy, you will (in some odd way) make me be happy.
myriam [email] said at 10:54 PM 08-22-2006:
me, I don't care. Just as long as you include me in the festivities!
