So several weeks ago I picked up this firewire thingy (did I post about this already?) so that I may download video from my DV cam to my PC. The only problem is I don't have a firewire port on my computer and when I hook it up through my USB port the whole computer just freezes up.
Am I gonna have to upgrade my PC completely or is there some kind of accessory that I can get that will allow me to actually, you know, put my camera to good use?

All I know how to do is turn this thing on, get on the interweb, burn CDs, watch DVDs and turn it off.

also best case is to be editing the video files on a different hard drive than windows/your editing program/ the scratch disk for your video editor is. (basically, a drive just for the videos)

Windows movie maker can capture video from DV cameras, but it won't be nearly as good quality as if you use actual video editing software.
