I hate Nextel. Their coverage sucks. Their service sucks. Their phones suck. And their contracts suck.
I'm finally to the point where I'm willing to break my contract to get a different service provider. So I figure, like I did when I busted outta my AT&T contract, I'd have to pay a penalty.
AT&T was a $200 penalty, but it was prorated over the two-year contract, so when I bailed with a few months left, it cost me fifty bucks.
I have two months left on my Nextel contract. I called them to see what the hit would be. Two hundred clams. What about pro-rating since I've been with you for 22 months? Nope. Two hundred. That's messed up. So I *have* to keep their shitty service for two more months. I could have dealt with dropping $50 to get out, but $200 is out of the question.

ed [email] said at 3:36 PM 03-15-2006: Yeah, my cell is my only phone. And I'm locked into a horrible rate (almost $120/mo) because I bought the BlackBerry and thought I'd need all the data transfer stuff and everything that I never use anymore. The plan I'm about to get (in May) will be about half that.
josh [email] said at 4:03 PM 03-15-2006: Also I probably know someone that might buy your Sprint BB when you are done... AND if you need enterprise Blackberry Services, let me know, my new business does that.
ed [email] said at 4:08 PM 03-15-2006: I'll check back witcha. It's a 7520 with two cradles with USB charging/sync cables. I have a straight-up wall-socket charger too.
I couldn't stand email on the BB, as I was getting barraged by spam at 2 in the morning. So I shut off email, which was the main reason I *thought* I wanted the phone in the first place.
My next phone will have a camera in it, and that's about it. I don't need a PDA phone.
josh [email] said at 5:42 PM 03-15-2006: you know you can tell the BB not to get mail between certain hours, or even only to accept mail from certain email addresses.
BlackberryEd said at 6:32 PM 03-15-2006: Hours-based filtering wouldn't work for me because I do want *relevant* email at 3am (from our T1 providers, for example)... But a whitelist-only solution is problematic because there are many addresses that I don't necessarily know in advance that might be important. So it's either let them all through or none. And I'm more comfortable with the "none" option. I really just don't feel the need to be *that* accessible, anymore.
The irony of me posting this reply from my BB while sitting out by the lake is not lost on me, though. Haha!
josh [email] said at 1:44 PM 03-15-2006: You might ask if they will let you transfer from Nextel to Sprint since they are owned by the same company now.
ed [email] said at 3:38 PM 03-15-2006: I wanna go Verizon so I can get the "In" deal. Most of my family's on Verizon, so I wouldn't have to wait until 9PM to call them. This is the key in my choice of service providers.
abby [email] said at 3:36 PM 03-15-2006: nextel, the worst cell phones in the world. i swear to god, they exist solely to keep the poor indebted socially and of course financially.
dave [email] said at 5:28 PM 03-15-2006: why don't other cell phone companies offer to buy out your contracts if you sign with them. that would seem to be a good way to secure market share.
neilbert said at 2:55 AM 03-16-2006: This was brought up when I worked for Cingular and the thought was that it really did not benefit Cingular at all to buy any competitor's contract; they crunched the numbers and figuring that Cingular would ALSO have to provide a new phone at a discount to the customer as well, that Cingular would not make it's money back, or break even till three or four years.
Michael said at 5:43 PM 03-15-2006: When this happened to me a couple of years ago, I had them switch me to a $9.99 metered plan bc it was cheaper than paying the disconnect fee, then turned off the phone and stuck it in a drawer for the last couple of months while I turned on a new service... just a thought. If you do that, make sure they don't charge you a change fee. If you want to keep the same number, this might not work.
BlackberryEd said at 6:38 PM 03-15-2006: This might be cool, but any time I try to change plans, they say I have to re-up, and that ain't gonna happen. Plus, keeping my current number is crucial. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
