devilbird

Abundance: Common urban bird
Length: 10 inches
Weight: 1¾ ounces
Wing Span: 14 inches

There is more info here about this fascinating creature that has been on my mind all night. Below is one of the more interesting snippets about them from that page...

Mockingbirds are one of the most commonly noticed birds in the state. They are either applauded for their audaciousness or cursed for their persistence in nocturnal singing or in the defense of their territory.

It won't stop. the startling range of songs this demonbeast has in its repertoire makes it entirely impossible to tune it out. if you see them, i urge you to kill them.

Since it is 5am and i have been up since 3am unsuccessfully wishing for sweet sweet golden silence...

This weekend:
friday night i went to my girlfriends cousins wedding in gonzales. i guess i havent been to many catholic weddings. weddings are weird either way, but when they throw an entire mass into the mix.. it makes it weird and long. the reception was at the lamar-dixon convention center. there was a rodeo going on not too far away.

saturday: office crawfish boil. mmmm crawfish. beer. shrimp. beer. frisbee. beer. then we went to kyoto and has sushi and fat noodles. then blessed mockingbird free sleep.

sunday: went to sugar magnolia for breakfast. i had the cream cheese stuffed french toast with blueberry sauce and cheesy grits. yum. met up with dave and then went to jazz fest for free. got to park at the fairgrounds and was ushered into the vip tent for free beer and clean(er) bathrooms. while we were there we saw a little bit of smokey robinson crooning before heading over to congo square to see wyclef jean. good times. midway through the performance the sun came out (up until that point it had been a weirdly cool and damp cloudy day) and wyclef ran with it.. "THE SUN IS OUT! We have to KEEP THE SUN OUT!!! KEEP THE SUN OUT!!!" good times. after that it was time to eat. first we had fried eggplant with crawfish remoulade. then some crawfish beignets followed by bbq chicken sandwiches. then some stuffed shrimp and fried green tomatos with an alligator meat pie. after that it was time for crawfish sausage poboys and some blackberry cobbler. my stomach went into a coma.

sunday night i learned about mockingbirds.

one of those nasty beasts woke me up at 5am every day for years back in california. nasty nasty bird. die mockingbird die!

apparently, btw, they scare all the other birds away... and thus are lonely lonely creatures. not that that gets them my sympathy.

the performance was impressive for about 10 minutes. i kept trying to recognize repeats. it took about 2 hours before i had the @#$%^&! pattern down. i even went outside and shook the tree. he flew up onto the powerlines undeterred. maybe i should read that harper lee book?

I think a dart would suffice, but if you really want to chainsaw a bird apart......you're welcome to it...

the future is looking bleak. apparently the birds with the widest array of tunes/noises get the chicks.. which would genetically tend towards the devilbird that has taken up residence on my block. this bird was incessant all night. tweet tweet.

You've got the pimp of the Mockingbirds outside your window. Instead of the chainsaw, try to reason with him. Spit some game his way. Maybe he'll show you the ropes. Then chainsaw that fucker.
