Espania

So I'm going to Spain in March with my mom, and it's the first time I've been to Europe. Has anyone got any tips for Barcelona & Madrid, or even just in general? Things to do besides the obvious things (i.e. seeing the Gaudi stuff and going to the Prado Museum) ?

me and matt backpacked around spain and portugal after college. for some reason, there are a lot of thalidomide babies in spain, so a lot of the homeless have flippers. i'm not even kidding.

barcelona was pretty, but nothing really stands out in my mind. pickpockets and absinthe. ah, we stayed in the scariest hostel ever. no lock, no shutters; man i was pretty stupid when i was 20. many of the the hostels in the big cities--if you are willing to spring for like $30 a night--are gorgeous and clean, though, even in people's houses.

we used Let's Go and it never steered us wrong. madrid was amazing. a lot like nyc. the weirdest part was the subway! in dc, the metro is sooo quiet, but there, everyone talked loudly and at once! it was pretty.

man, i wish i could remember details without the book. we hit the record stores and asked which punk clubs to go to and stuff. the people there are way friendly, and we got to go to some random parties, which i'm sure your mom would be down for. the gay district in madrid is the funnest place ever. all the kinda seedy rock bars were there, drinks were cheap, the 'hood is safe, the people are exceptionally attractive.

if you are a vegetarian this trip is gonna be your private hell.there was a museum of pork matt made me go to in madrid. all i ate the whole time was olives.

the best place we visitied, though, was cintra, in portugal (all the way around). it is basically this enormous forest that grew inside the shell of a decaying castle. it was a day-trip thing.

also, sevilla was our fave city in the country. beautiful, small, and people danced in the steets at 2 am with their toddlers. (corny alert, but really it happened.) again, we searched out the bad part of town, where they make really nice tile...

blah blah and blah! i'm sure this was a huge help. uh, yeah: let's go spain. the only book in that series i didn't end up setting fire to toward the end!
