oh my god. i just almost got beaten up in my spanish class and i am not exaggerating. this boy across the room from me is consistently rude to the teacher and today i had enough. it was the last minute of class and she was giving instructions in spanish and he raised his hand and said loudly, "no. you can't do that. it is 9:15 and class is over." she was obviously shocked but regained her composure and dismissed class and i looked at him and told him he could not keep being rude to our instructor. he shot back that if i didn't like it i could drop the class. i told him that since he has the problem he should drop the class. i thought it was finished and was putting my books away when he suddednly lunged acroos the room at me and was over my table with his mouth inches from mine telling me that if i have something to say to him i could take it outside. luckily a marine sits in front of me and a strong black girl sits to my right. everyone in the class surrounded him and told him to leave and told him never to speak to me again. it really shook me up and i guess b/c i am menopausal it even made me cry. i went to tell the teacher what had happened but he was already in her office. when i finally talked to her she said she was sorry but that i should take care of myself and she would deal with him. she said he wouldnt cause me anymore problems. he seems like a crazy person to me and honestly, i am a little afraid. he crossed a major boundary. anyway, she asked me not to report it. i still havent decided. i am writing about it here so that at least someone will know in case i get murdered in the parking lot. buenas dias!
brandon [email] said at 11:48 AM 01-23-2003: Cricket if you don't report it, you're doing a dis-service to others on campus.
And you're making people who care about you worry.
So do yourself a favor, and report this guy, because if he was willing to do that over nothing - ask a girl to take it outside - there's not telling what he might do to someone else over something more "important."
More importantly, though, after shit like that happens it's going to make it next to impossible to learn in that class - you'll never be at ease.
Administration can get rid of little fucks like that who make threats with ease - especially when there are multiple witnesses.

why'd your instructor say not to report? has she had problems controlling a class before? or has she tolerated stuff like that before.
kiche [email] said at 10:22 AM 01-24-2003: usm is a giant junior college. they have an attendance policy where all the teachers have to take roll call before all the classes, and they have bells signaling when class is over and when you are tardy.
caleb said at 8:29 PM 01-24-2003: haha... fuckin' nicholls. my mom was trying to talk my brother into doing art there so he wouldn't have to move out (they live a couple miles from campus). crazy shit.
cricket [email] said at 12:21 AM 01-25-2003: actually, it isn't like that anymore. no bells or roll or anything. the sidewalks this week are littered with chalk scrawled anti-war slogans and there are at least five punkrock kids with home made pants and stringy hair, so you know it's kickin'.
kiche [email] said at 12:00 PM 01-23-2003: go directly to the campus police now, and report him. you do not know this man, and do not know what he is capable of. it is possible that campus police are already keeping an eye on him.
the campus police station at usm was near the union when i went there. if you do not know where it is go to the union and ask someone.
but most importantly, do this now, do not wait until tomorrow or later this afternoon.
brandon [email] said at 12:06 PM 01-23-2003: Exactly. That guy sounds really unstable. You know, interrupting a teacher. Exploding over nothing at all.
gen [email] said at 5:03 PM 01-23-2003: it really shook me up and i guess b/c i am menopausal it even made me cry.
If you're the same same Cricket who was in my ENGL-1003 class at LSU (1996), then I can't imagine why you'd be menopausal. Unless you had your ovaries removes, for some sad reason. You must mean PMS.
brandon [email] said at 5:10 PM 01-23-2003: I don't like to point out the obvious, but el grillo was probably using metonymy or synecdoche to indicate hormonal imbalance and not the actual state of menopause.
According to David Foster Wallace, Canadians are uncomfortable with U.S.A. American's sloppy use of metaphor. I'll take this as a case in point. ;)
gen [email] said at 6:47 PM 01-23-2003: I think this has more to do with my being a grad student in a medical discipline (yes, epidemiology is actually under the Faculty of Medicine at McGill) than my being Canadian.
cricket [email] said at 8:45 PM 01-23-2003: um... yes. you see, you are absolutely right, gen. i am not menopausal. and as i was driving home from school today, it hit me that i had written i was menopausal instead of saying i was pre-menstrual. so, thankyou brandon for the vote of confidence, but i actually erred. folks-ladies and gentleman, let it be known that i still get my period every single month. but genvieve, it is good to know you read my work...hah!
jeff [email] said at 1:52 AM 01-24-2003: I also agree you should report him. As Brandon pointed out, if he does this kind of crap in the open and in front of witnesses, imagine what he may do in private to others. I believe more than half of my female friends have endured some form of rape and with my mother's involvement with CASA, I hear about all sorts of severe abuse from these kinds of guys as they get older (within the confines of what she can divulge). This doesn't have to be your responsibility, but I hope with everyone else here that you can feel confident enough to at least make sure he's held accountable for his most recent actions.
It's even possible that he may have somewhat threatened the teacher given her expectations from you, no matter what he eventually "promised".
kiche [email] said at 9:57 AM 01-24-2003: also, if something was to go down and he was injured/killed, there would be a police report documenting the previous incident, which would help exonerate you/your friends/family from any culpability.
cricket [email] said at 12:37 PM 01-24-2003: don't worry guys. i did the responsible thing and reported him to the dean of student somethings. he will call the student in and "discuss his behavior" and then i guess it is over. the teacher has the option to remove him fron the class, so it is her call. if he or anyone ever disrupts her class again, i am not saying a word. i lost a huge amount of respect for the woman over the way she handled this case. which is sad because she is a fantastic teacher. i made my stand but she padded his fall. whatever the guys problems are, college is not the place to prove you get another chance. university is where you prove you are worth all the opportunities you have already been given. fuck people who disrupt higher learning. just b/c we pay to attend college does not mean it is our economic right to behave any way we please. education is still fundamentally a priveledge not an inalienable right, and i believe in acting to insure it not be taken away.
milky [email] said at 1:24 PM 01-24-2003: I disrupted the learning process in college a few times, but it was always for the forces of humor, not the forces of evil...
Emmaliegh said at 1:29 PM 01-24-2003: I always admired the kids in high school who gave up there education for the entertainment of the class. thank you kenny!
wolfgang norton [ url ] said at 12:10 AM 01-25-2003: Let's discuss this; I was a decent class clown and a poor stand-up comic, but I'm bent on making my return in the latter
cricket [email] said at 9:28 PM 01-25-2003: thankyou. is this mary, fellow waitress mary or someone who asked me about belly buttons in a park one day?
cricket [email] said at 10:30 PM 01-26-2003: no, no. a girl named mary asked me the first day of school if a girl had ever licked my bellybutton. i was alittle afraid but if that were her talking, i didnt want to just come right out and say she had scared me- but just between us, she scared me.
