WARE IN PRESTIGIOUS WHITNEY BIENNIAL
------------------------------------
CHRIS WARE is amongst 113 artists and collaborative teams in the THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART’s 2002 Biennial Exhibition, the largest Biennial since 1981, opening March 7, 2002. The Whitney’s signature survey of contemporary American art, the panoramic Biennial will run through May 26, 2002, filling three floors, as well as the Museum’s Sculpture Court, stairwell, main elevator, and Lobby Gallery, which will be transformed into a sound installation room. The show is possibly the most prestigious showcase of contemporary art in the country, and marks the first time a comic book artist has been invited to participate. Ware’s contribution will include pages from JIMMY CORRIGAN and THE ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY #15.
In conjunction with the show, the museum has produced a 15” x 39” color poster by Ware, available exclusively at the Museum.
The Biennial is regarded as the signature exhibition of the Whitney Museum, evolving into the premier showcase for the most important recent work made by American artists, from the established to the unknown. For information, please call 1-800 WHITNEY or visit http://www.whitney.org/
sizemore [ url ] said at 8:29 AM 03-08-2002: Thanks for the info. Chris Ware is just a genius. I gave a lecture on comicbooks recently up at Goldsmiths here in London and Chris Ware was the one guy I kept coming back to. You can catch one of his early strips over at http://www.thisamericanlife.com/pages/trax/chriscomic/1.html
Elsewhere on that site if you do a search for a show entitled 'Superpowers' you can hear Chris talk about his childhood. That whole show is a blast. Give it a listen and then decide which superpower you'd rather have.
ben said at 12:52 PM 03-08-2002: remember this? dressing like a superhero may have been a strange thing a long time ago, but i'm betting that most of us did. i don't have many pictures of myself when i was a kid and not wearing some type of ridiculous costume.
anotherben said at 10:14 AM 03-08-2002: i will be driving down to louisiana in the first half of may. ifins you want to hitch a ride back dc/ny way let me know.
zack [email] said at 4:59 PM 03-08-2002: God, I'd like to.. I'm planning on being up there in June, though.. It sounds awful decadent to make two trips to NY in the space of a month.
anotherben said at 10:57 PM 03-08-2002: its not a bad habit to get into. the offer stands. unless someone else signs up to be the person to periodically scream as i make my 22 hour marathon drive.
andrew said at 3:12 PM 03-08-2002: i'm going to see it too. Supposedly there's a lot of experimental video in it this time. miranda july also.
