The following are excerpts from an interesting inter-office mail exchange that's going on at my work. They broadcasted these to the entire campus staff, so I figure it's not private. There a few interesting ones going around, I'll spare you the ones about the possible unionisation of my workplace.
Hello to everyone! I am asking for your assistance with an informal research question. This question was asked by one of my students, after we were discussing the racial classifications found on job applications and other types of documents. Although we discussed many aspects of this practice in America, one of my students, asked the following question:
Doctor ...there are White people born in Africa. How would they be classified racially, if they moved to the U.S. and became American Citizens?
I answered his question according to my perspectives, and since I am requesting an honest, personal reaction from those who choose to answer this, I will not set the mode of how the question should be answered. I would love to know how you would answer. I therefore request, that if you respond to this, that you reply to all, so that everyone can see the answers. I will share your responses (not your names) with my students.
Thanks for your time and cooperation.
Peace!

Only in America would this be an issue. In reality, there is no such thing as "race". Repeat. There is no such thing as "race". This concept was developed in the 19th century by pseudo-scientists. They classified people by socially selected characteristics to maintain the divisions within society.
Example: Some socially selected characteristics of a person who is considered "black" are dark skin, kinky hair, broad facial features. However there are people from India who have skin and complexion as dark or darker than most Black Americans BUT they posses a socially selected characteristic White Americans have: straight, uncurled hair. They would not be correctly classified as "black". Some socially selected characteristics of a person considered "white" are pale, white skin, straight hair. There are people of Semitic and Puerto Rican descent who posses tightly curled or kinky hair but have pale skin color. Would they be correctly classified as "white" ?
"Race" is a false, almost derogatory classification of who all Americans are.
Any comments?

In other news, on my way to work I was behind a truck that had five bullet holes in the back.
And on my way to work I found a Technics direct drive turntable on top of a stack of TVs in our neighborhood. It's probably broken but maybe, just maybe...
Linus said at 4:58 PM 02-27-2002: Actually, I would agree. I think alot of the problems people attribute to race issues are strictly a result of economics and education.
Linus said at 5:37 PM 02-27-2002: Are you sure you're not kidding? I mean I'm pretty damn white? I've got the typical Southern Louisiana buried Creole heritage and I'm like 1/32 Cherokee or something but besides that I'm straight up Caucasian.
Kara said at 5:52 PM 02-27-2002: I agree with Linus that race relations in the US have become blurred and inseparable from the more universal and historic problem of class.
Medically, there are certain differences between "races" of people, and it would be stupid to deny that.
Chris and I were discussing a Salmon Rushdie quote that notion of "roots" and "heritage" is used often to keep people from moving and progressing.
Of course I am not saying that people should forsake their cultural distinctions- I am angered at the level of erasure of differences (assimilation, I guess) in america already.
But identification by ones origin really does little for anyone.

"Race, in the space I mark human
Race - face the music
We all bones when we dead
Race, in the space I mark human
Cut me, cut U
Both the blood is red, I gotcha!"
I do believe his name was an unpronounceable squiggle at the time he wrote that song. But, love Prince or loathe him, I can't see how you'd disagree with what he says here.
Brian Bibbly said at 6:12 PM 02-27-2002: Heres an equally socially relevant Prince lyric:
Sexy motherfucker shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass {repeat in BG}
Guard your folks who date your daughter
The sexy motherfucker's so fine, I'll drink her bath water
A long-legged 5'8" packin' an ass as tight as a grape
I wanted 2 spit my game but said 2 myself, "Mmm, just conversate" (Yeah)
Cuz I'm usually quite the calm one (Come on)
U never found me out prowlin', boy, I'm just havin' fun
But I had 2 change my state of mind 4 this behind
I bet if U throw that ass in the air, it would turn into sunshine
Sexy motherfucker shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass

"Am I a white man? Am I a black Man?
It ain't really fair
and my lifes been to short to really care
and if I'm Black or if I'm White
I doubt I'll ever choose or decide
And I'll still be the same inside
Not gonna clutter my head with stupid pride
And a mind still young, a life just begun.
Not old enough to know wrong from right.
But young enought to know this ain't my fight...
Everyone speaks in terms of Black and White.
Lines of seperation, Segregation yet another fight.
The next generation, seems like noone really cares
Only thoughts of making money, doesn't matter if fair aint fair.
All this racist pride grows more and more.
We all have minds, stupidity is not what they're for.
Look all around me, all i see is hate.
Can't let it be this way, Can't ever be too late..."
that was a song by crimpshrine... just thought as long as people were referencing lyrics id throw a song in. it was written by a young jewish lad, and back in the day jewish people weren't considered white. i guess some people still don't think they are.
my take on it is this... either you're with me, or you're against me. and if you against me i'll fucking feed you your nuts, or labia as it may be...
Brandon said at 12:07 AM 02-28-2002: I have/had a technics with the same problem. IF you lift up the platter you'll see all the drive belts. There should be a little plastic "trip" off to the side that flips up whenever the arm reaches a certain angle toward the center of the record player. On mine, this lever was broken and everytime that I let a record run too long I had to disembowel it and put it back into the non-cut off position to get it to run again.

And I have so little money to spend. So sad. What will I do without my music? I guess I'll wait 'til next month and see how far I can dip into my nest egg.
