"Neil Armstrong dreamed he was going to land on cheese, and he'd be able to eat the cheese at a picnic with moonie-peeps." - Cecil, on living your dream
I need new music. Now. I'm having so much trouble finding some new bands to listen to. Each time I think I'm onto something, I check out an album and it sounds nothing like the first song or two that I'd heard. I thought the Black Eyed Peas would finally do it, and Elephunk is a really great album, but I don't want mellow. I want heart-pounding, blow-your-head-off funk. Maybe I need to compile a Best of George Clinton CD or something. Less electric is great too. Paul Simon used to get the same feeling across with an acoustic (see: 1970's). A full, rich sound, and great rhythm with some changes.
But there must be some modern equivalent. Any ideas? At least half the album should be in the same vein as Retarded. The kind of songs that don't sound right at less than full volume. The kind of songs that make you forget your car has a speedometer.

I like some of the other suggestions, but as you said, they're not quite what I'm looking for. Maybe there just isn't much of what I'm looking for out there.
The richness of sound is very important. The Peas, the Fugees, even Eminen to some extent, have the ability to combine a large number of different "voices" (vocal and instrumental) to make a great "full" sound. It's not the same as just adding a loud bass guitar.
The ESB that Kate sent (Moody) is really good too and I'll probably order it, but again, not the sound I hoped for.
This is very subjective of course. In truth, I'm probably (without knowing it) expecting a very clean recording from a modern studio to get the full sound I want. I find most "funk" recordings from the 70's and earlier to be a hollow copy of live music. I think ESB would have been incredible in person but it sounds like it was recorded in somebody's basement. Flat.
Anyway, thanks for the leads, I do appreciate it. I discovered MP3.com which lists "similar artists" and "influences" for many groups, including the ones you guys have given me. It might take a while, but I think I'll find something. I'll post results here. Feel free to drop more ideas here too.

ESG - A South Bronx Story
It's an import, so it tends to get pricey, over 20 bucks, but being in DC you can find it used...but it's so freaking worth it!!
