Don't try to speak French to anyone; only English. When you go to the clubs, do the funky chicken dance. Make sure you go to Starbuck's and the Hard Rock Cafe. If Planet Hollywood is still open, go there. This way you will be able to really experience France as a country and learn more about French people and what matter to them.

I wanted to go to the catacombs but ran out of time.

If you have four days, I'd spend the whole time in Paris with a day trip to Versailles if you like royalty. If you go to the Louvre, research in advance what you want to see or use the map they give you to find exactly the highlights you want to see because it's really nine museums in one and wandering around is a luxury only if you have the time.
I think going to the modern art museum at Centre Pompidou is better if you have time constraints and if you have time for a second museum, I've heard the Asian Art Museum is mindblowing though I haven't been there. I do not recommend the Picasso museum.
You might just want to wander around the Latin Quarter. Sacre Couer and its surroundings is more fun than Notre Dame though walking along the Seine is fabulous, too.
If you are planning more time, I'd try to get to Southern France around the Mediterranean where there are a lot of charming towns like Montpellier, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and Perpignan. Since it's harder to get to the South (likely you'll have to fly to Paris and then train south), if you have the time and chance do it. Most major US cities have flights going to Paris which makes it an easier trip in general so you can plan that later. Unless Paris is most opportune now.
