At the top of my Paris to-do list are the sewers, catacombs, and ossuaries. But I'm weird.

Show up to France mulleted, wearing a fanny pack, t-shirts that have eagles and/or US flags on them, and after you have put on fifty pounds. Don't try to speak French to anyone; only English. When you go to the clubs, do the funky chicken dance. Make sure you go to Starbuck's and the Hard Rock Cafe. If Planet Hollywood is still open, go there. This way you will be able to really experience France as a country and learn more about French people and what matter to them.

In Paris go to the Basilica De Sacre Coeur and take the Dome and Crypt tour. It's around 5 Euros and the view from the dome is the best.

I wanted to go to the catacombs but ran out of time.

How many days do you have and when will you go?

If you have four days, I'd spend the whole time in Paris with a day trip to Versailles if you like royalty. If you go to the Louvre, research in advance what you want to see or use the map they give you to find exactly the highlights you want to see because it's really nine museums in one and wandering around is a luxury only if you have the time.

I think going to the modern art museum at Centre Pompidou is better if you have time constraints and if you have time for a second museum, I've heard the Asian Art Museum is mindblowing though I haven't been there. I do not recommend the Picasso museum.

You might just want to wander around the Latin Quarter. Sacre Couer and its surroundings is more fun than Notre Dame though walking along the Seine is fabulous, too.

If you are planning more time, I'd try to get to Southern France around the Mediterranean where there are a lot of charming towns like Montpellier, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and Perpignan. Since it's harder to get to the South (likely you'll have to fly to Paris and then train south), if you have the time and chance do it. Most major US cities have flights going to Paris which makes it an easier trip in general so you can plan that later. Unless Paris is most opportune now.

the water level night scene at the seine was my favorite part of the city; we stayed in the IV arrondissment, which had a relaxed, Marigny vibe, next time, I'd stay in the IX, because it's lively and has the Palais Garnier and the old Casino which were two of my favorite buildings, and it's down the hill from Montmarte; Aix is worth checking out if you have the time

I spent 2+ days in Paris in July and most of what I did was wander the streets - it's a great place for that.
