Wal-Mart sells Nazi Totemkpf shirts

Apparently Wal-Mart is proudly sellling shirts with the Death's Head insignia of Aushwitz guards on them - this from the company that refuses to sell Jon Stewart & The Daily Show writer's book, Maxim, and countless "offensive" albums due to their off-kilter view of what is and isn't appropriate to sell to the American public. His follow-up entries (linked at the bottom there) are even more interesting, as he recieves a promt reply about how sad they are about the shirts and how they are going to pull them, but then take absolutely no action whatsoever.

Alsosad/ interesting - white supremacists read the blog entry and flock to Wal-Mart to buy these shirts.

The Death's Head insignia was on uniforms of German soldiers at least a century and a half before the rise of National Socialism.

that specific design? because that design is apparently lifted directly from the uniforms of the 3rd SS Division.

Now, I'm not all up in arms about this but you have to admit it's pretty crazy.

The insignia was definitely used on German WWII insignia but it was already an part of their uniform. Just like the round helmets and the feldgrau color.

I skimmed the thread on the link and I believe I saw someone say that Wal-Mart also sells Che Guevara shirts. I doubt that most people who buy such things at Wal-Mart are so steeped on their background; more likely, they say, 'Hey cool! A skull!' or 'Didn't this guy in the beret used to be lead singer of Rage Against The Machine?'

A bit like some of the more casual devotees of Kabbalah.(Just keeping the focus on the Kentwood Jiggler)

I think the funniest thing about this story is that the dude wrote an outraged blog entry about this and the only real effect it had was to cause neo-nazis and white supremacists to flock to Wal-Mart to buy these before they were taken off the shelves.

That is not so outlandish; anytime anyone complains about the moral content of anything, sales almost uniformly go up, regardless of whether or not it is actually a quality product.

I am not sure if there is any truth to the adage that there is no bad publicity but it seems like more often than not that holds true.

An interesting thing about this is how common skulls are on clothing. A Killogger used to work for a Ralph Lauren line whose insignia is a skull. Some stupid NYTimes article said it was about branding rebellion. I think it's a subconsious fashion reaction to all the death imagery from operation iraqi freedom.
